
MANHATTAN, KAN. – An Alabama man has been arrested in connection to a shooting in Manhattan on Tuesday.
Officers responded to a 911 call for an individual with gunshot wounds in the 400 block of S. Juliette Ave. in Manhattan on Tuesday shortly before 3:00 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a 38-year-old female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported from the scene to Via Christi in critical condition.
Officers quickly identified Jamie Bernard Smith, Jr., 23, of Alabama as the suspect. Smith, who is known to the victim, had fled the scene following the shooting. Attempts to locate him with the help of the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol proved unsuccessful into Wednesday morning.
Smith surrendered himself at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was placed under arrest on a requested charge of first-degree murder and is currently being held in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond.
