POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A strong storm spawned a deadly tornado in northeast Kansas Tuesday.
Just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, an EF3 tornado struck the Pottawatomie County community of Westmoreland with wind gusts of 140mph, according to a preliminary damage survey by the National Weather Service in Topeka.
The tornado was on the ground for eight minutes, traveled 2.58 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards.
One person died in the storm and three were injured. The tornado also destroyed 22 homes, three RVs and five outbuildings and damaged another 13 homes and one commercial building.
