Lois Darlene Johnson Cook, 89, of Wamego, KS passed away, October 17.2025 at the Wamego Health Center.
Lois was born to Harry and Dossie (Tinsley) Johnson at Wamego, KS on August 29, 1936. She lived in Wamego, KS area all her life. She attended school and graduated from Wamego High School, Manhattan Area Technical College and the Police Academy in Topeka. Lois worked at Genn Hospital, Wamego City Hospital, Riley County Hospital, Riley County Emergency Management Services, Shawnee County Emergency Services Unit, Midwest True Value, Pottawatomie County Sheriff Office, Special Deputy for the Wabaunsee County Sheriff Office and one of the first Emergency Medical Technician with Pottawatomie County Ambulance Service.
She was a member of the City of Wamego Police Reserves, Life member and past Officer of the Ladies VFW auxiliary 1258, past Officer of the Dutch Mill Noon Club GFWC, past Officer of the Three Rivers Board, past Officer of the Wamego City Hospital Board and Honorary Member of the Wamego Hospital Foundation. Over the years, she volunteered with the American Red Cross since 1954; Head Start; Community Health Ministry for several years; Topeka Veterans Administration Hospital; Coached Girl’s Softball for 7 years; Girl Scouts of America, where she was a leader for 10 years and Boy Scouts of America, where she was a leader for 32 years. In 2008, she earned the honor of Wamego Citizen of the Year for all of her volunteer work. She enjoyed gardening and raising her flowers.
Lois married William Shelton Cook on November 27, 1955. Following sixty-seven years together, he preceded her in death on December 7, 2022.
Survivors include daughter, Kathryn Reed; sons, Harry S. Cook and William Cook (Della) all of Wamego, KS; grandsons, Michael Reed (Courtney) of Wamego, KS and Adam Reed of Wamego, KS; Great-grandchildren, Lexi, Lex, Symphony, Abby, Willow; brother, Robert Johnson of McFarland, KS; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Emma Johnson and brothers Donald Johnson and Vernon Johnson.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, October 27, 2025, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, KS. Reverend Dr. Tony Matia will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery. Lois will lie-in-state beginning at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. They suggest memorial contributions to Wamego Health Center or Wamego Community Foundation for the annual fireworks show. Those may be sent in care of the funeral home.
