OGDEN — Manhattan Area Habitat for Humanity celebrates an important milestone in the construction of its 31st home at a Groundbreaking Ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday at 201 S. Elm, Ogden. Local Habitat representatives will speak during a short program.

This home, like the award-winning pilot build completed in 2021, will have the ability to produce as much power as it consumes through high-performance design and the use of solar panels. This is a transformative step for housing affordability as this will help reduce the costs for all homeowners. This also shows the public the possibility to make all homes in our region more sustainable. To complete this home, we are working with Fort Riley Home Builders Institute. HBI, Manhattan Area Technical Collage, Job Corps, Home Builders Institute, Flint Hills Renewable Energy & Efficiency Cooperative, Kansas State University Architecture Planning and Design, and Flint Hills Area Builders Association.

Our home buyers complete a thorough screening process, demonstrating ability to pay, and complete at least 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build their new home, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. Homebuyers will repay a 0 percent interest mortgage over a period of 20-30 years, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.” Households earning less than 80 percent of the area median income qualify for our zero-interest mortgage product. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
