MANHATTAN, Kan. - On the morning of July 7th, Courtney Thompson was walking across Poyntz Avenue in downtown Manhattan. In a crosswalk, Thompson was struck by a car. She was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in by Riley County EMS.
Conscious the entire time, she was then life flighted to Via Christi Trauma Center in Topeka for further treatment. Doctors did extensive tests on Courtney, finding she was suffering from four pelvic fractures, three spinal fractures, fractures in both legs, multiple organ contusions, and a severe concussion.
So far, Courtney has received surgery to repair her pelvic fractures, and is scheduled to receive surgery on her right leg fracture today. Currently, she is in a back brace to stabilize her spinal fractures.
A mother of two, and a recent Masters Degree recipient of Kansas State University, Courtney had been working two jobs on top of her school load, all while taking care of her two daughters, so this accident carries weight outside of Thompson's injuries. Financial responsibilities like rent, food, clothing, and other costs required to keep a family with two children functioning will soon become tough to come by.To assist Courtney and her family with the medical expenses attached to this traumatic injury, Manhattan community members have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money.
The following is an excerpt from Courtney's GoFundME page: "This is our chance Manhattan...K-State...USD 383...Friends....Family! Courtney will not be able to work...shoot currently she can't even walk! The bills will quickly pile up for rent, food, school clothes for the girls, medical bills, adaptations to her home...and on and on and on. She never asked for help...she never will....she's just that kind of person. But this is a chance to take care of one of our own... for the girl that gives so selflessly to all of us!"
The initial goal for the Thompson family is $10,000, and currently, the page has raised just over $2,800. If you are interested in assisting the Thompson family in their battle, more information on Courtney's story and how to donate, visit the GoFundME page here.
