Maxine Faye (Mapes) Oatney, age 92 of Waterville, passed away surrounded by family on July 4th, 2023 at the Blue Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Blue Rapids, KS. 

She was born to Harry and Pearl (Holland) Mapes in Waterville on August 3, 1930. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1948.

She married Harris Eugene Oatney on November 22, 1948 at the Methodist Parsonage in Waterville, KS.  He passed away in 1985. 

Maxine worked as a public servant in nursing homes in her early years before moving to the Waterville area in 1968. She cooked at the Village Inn for several years, before going to the Waterville Grade School as their cook and custodian for 14 years. She enjoyed cooking for family, family reunions, puzzle books, playing cards, listening to country music and visiting with friends.

Maxine is survived by her four children, daughter Alice (Mick) Swearingen, son Jim (Kim) Oatney, son John (Buffy) Oatney all of Waterville, daughter Jill (Brad) Schramm, Bremen; one brother Dean (Ida) Mapes, Guam;  two daughters-in-law, Maxine (Larry) Plegge, Marysville and Dottie Oatney, Kansas City area; eleven grandsons and several great grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry; two sons Allen and Joe; two grandsons Scott Swearingen and Zack Oatney; four great grandchildren Chelsie Oatney, Brady Mills, Easton Oatney and Gabriel Oatney; two great great grandchildren, Otis and Russell Weber; and six siblings, Harry Mapes, Helen Jensen, Bill Mapes, Cecil Mapes, Delbert Mapes and June Jorgenson.

Viewing is from noon until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July, 10, 2023 with a visitation from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at the Waterville United Methodist Church with Pastor Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Maxine Oatney Memorial Fund to be designated at a later date by the family. Contributions may be left in care of the Christie-Anderes Funeral Home, PO Box 61, Waterville, Kansas 66548.
