Pets saved after apartment fire in Manhattan

Manhattan — Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire in Manhattan.

Just before 5p.m. Wednesday fire crews were dispatched to 1200 Ratone Street in Manhattan for a report of smoke in a an apartment, according to Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Almes.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from the structure, advanced a hose line into the basement of Apt. A and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes.  One cat was rescued from the apartment that had the fire and two dogs were removed unharmed from the apartment next door.

The building is a one-story apartment building that contains five dwelling units.

Two occupants were displaced from the building and the American Red Cross responded to assist. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $30,000 to the structure, according to Almes.
