LeRoy Eugene Walters, age 85, of Junction City, died January 12, 2023, at Homecare and Hospice Good Shepherds House in Manhattan. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to meet at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home to form a procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
He was born March 20, 1937, in Huntington, Indiana the son of Ira Daniel Walters and Ruth Mae (Nunamaker) Walters.
LeRoy served in the United States Army for 20 years and retired as the rank of Staff Sergeant. He had received numerous awards and citations for his service to our country. Those close to him knew him as “Walt”.
LeRoy retired as a Computer Operator Supervisor from the Civil Service Information Management Office (IMO) at Fort Riley Kansas. He was instrumental in digitally converting microfiche records at the IMO office.
He was a member of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA).
Walt enjoyed spending time with family and seeing his grandkids. He was always happy to attend his grandkids sporting events and dance recitals. He loved nurturing plants and was still actively gardening. Other hobbies included woodworking and painting.
As a lifelong learner he spent many years studying the bible and wrote three books based upon his research with two of his books being published.
In July 1960, he married Betty June Howell in Shelbina, Missouri. June survives the home. He is survived by one brother, Ronnie Walters of Indiana. Additional survivors include his children Deb of Iowa, DeAnn of Texas, David of South Dakota, Jenny (Steven) of Kansas, Ruth (Dennis) of Oklahoma, Cindy (Vernon) of Kansas, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
