George was born in Fargo, ND October 18, 1922. Was graduated from North Dakota State High School.
Enlisted in the Army during World War II. Served in the 104th
Timberwolf Infantry Division and saw combat in France, Holland, and
Germany. Was promoted to Artillery First Lieutenant in the Korean War
where he trained troops in Japan. Awarded the Bronze Star and three
unit citations.
After completing his journalism studies at the University of Missouri,
he worked in marketing for the Junction City Daily Union, the
Omaha World Herald, WOW Radio & TV in Omaha, Des Moines Register
& Tribune, Business & Industry Magazine in Des Moines, Iowa
Power & Light Company, and the Home Builders Association of Greater
Des Moines.
He took pride in being a 32nd degree Mason, a Za-Ga-Zig Shriner, an
AHEPA, and a member of the Kiwanis Club and Toastmasters International.
Hunting, target shooting, golf, reading, and writing were his joys.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Betsy Mirras;
sister, Margaret Neff; and niece, Sandra Loughlin. He leaves his
brother, Colonel Pete Mirras of McLean, VA; grand nephews, Aaron and
Andrew Loughlin of Kansas City, MO; Tom and Ladonna Gratias of Clive,
his close-like family-friends.
A memorial visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, February 20, at
Iles Westover Chapel, with a Trisagion Service at 7. A graveside
service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 21, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
A celebration luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, February 23 at
St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
