Gerald (Gary) C. Markvicka, age 73, of Manhattan, died July 29, 2023 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.
He was born on December 8, 1949 in Loup City, Nebraska, the son of Alfonso and Dorothy (Pray) Markvicka. He grew in the Loup City area and graduated from Loup City High School with the class of 1968.
After he graduated high school, Gary was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was proud to serve his country and made the Army his lifelong career in Military Intelligence, learning to speak three foreign languages. He served two tours of duty in Germany during the Cold War and later in Operation Desert Storm. Gary earned many awards for his service in the Army, including a Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He retired with the rank of CW3 after over 20 years of service to his country.
On July 27, 1970, he was united in marriage to Judy Hurt. She survives him at their home in Manhattan.
In addition to his wife Judy, he is also survived by his children: Shannon Kirk (Tom), Corey Markvicka, and Ryan Markvicka; his granddaughters: Delaney Kirk, Dylan Kirk, Gracyn Markvicka and Kendall Markvicka; his siblings Peggy (Pat) Toscano, Jane (Gery) Bonczynski, Mary Kay (Alan) Hemmer, Max (Julie) Markvicka and Roy (Sandy) Markvicka. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Larchick.
Graveside services for Gerald will be held on Thursday August 10, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.
