Society of 1st Division chapter resumes meetings

There's been a delay in Society of the 1st Division Chapter meetings in Junction City during the coronavirus pandemic. But this past Thursday they resumed.

Phyllid Fitzgerald, executive Director, informed the members about a number of topics including the Big Red One Support Fund. "Anyone can donate to that fund. Just if they send us any money they can earmark it for that. "

Money from the fund can be used to support active duty Soldiers or their family members that have an emergency, and have exhausted all available means to them on Fort Riley. "Then they can come to us. They fill out an application and we verify with their unit, and if we have any funds available we can provide that in the form of a grant," said Fitzgerald.

The fund is also used to provide commissary gift cards to the Post Chaplain's Office during the holiday season for families in need of some extra help during the holiday.

The session on Thursday was the first one since March of 2020. Members also heard the story of Sgt. ( Ret. ) Mike DeBolt, a Distinguished Service Cross recipient for his heroic life saving actions in 2008 while he was stationed in Afghanistan serving with the 1st Infantry Division. DeBolt was in attendance at the meeting.
