Lloyd Murl Miller

Lloyd Miller was born at 4:20 a.m., March 31, 1926, in Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kansas.  He died February 14, 2023, in Wichita, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 1:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington, Kansas.

Graveside Services will be held on February 21, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Murl & Lucile Miller, a son Lloyd Miller Jr., his sisters Virginia Hulpieu and Beverly Hiebert, his brother Kenneth Miller and his wife of the home, Donna Miller.

He is survived by 3 nieces, Gynia Crane, Marva Hiebert & Lori Seron and 6 nephews, Mitchell Miller, Roger Miller, Russell Miller, Gordon Hulpieu, Quinton Hiebert & Jay Hiebert.

MUSIC WAS HIS LIFE!

He started playing the piano at age 5, played in church at age 7 and was the church pianist at age 12.  At age 17, he played in a piano audition with 20 pieces and was given a grade of 1+.

This was interrupted by World War II.  He took basic training in Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Going overseas, he passed New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and landed on Luzon, Philippines.  He was in the service for a total of 25 months, spending 18 months overseas.

After his return home, he completed a Bachelor of Music and Piano Performance at Washburn Municipal University in Topeka, Kansas.  He received two honors there being inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu (Social Sciences) and the Mu Alpha Pi (Music).  He later earned a Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Wichita and then a Master of Music Education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

He began teaching music at Zenda and Hazelton, Kansas, then instrumental music at Borger, Texas and Arkansas City, Kansas.  After additional schooling for administration, he was a principal at Nashville and Zenda, Kansas.  He coached girls sports in both Denison and Burnette, Kansas.

During this time, he received a seminary degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.

After retirement, he got involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization.  He served as a commander of the Newton and Wellington posts, as quartermaster for Newton and Wellington posts and as a chaplain for both Wellington and Wichita.  He also served as a chaplain in the fifth district and was Kansas state chaplain for 8 years during which time he dedicated all four state veteran cemeteries at Dodge City, WaKeeney, Winfield and Manhattan.  Lloyd also served as the Western Conference chaplain for 2 years and he and his wife Donna both volunteered at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield for a total of 20 years.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas in lieu of flowers.
