MANHATTAN - On Monday, March 6, 2023, at 5:07 pm, officers with the Riley County Police Department were called to the parking lot of the Sunset Zoo on the report of a shooting with one victim being injured.
Upon arrival, officers found a 23-year-old Manhattan man with a gunshot wound to the neck. He was transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan and later to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment of the non-life-threatening injuries.
RCPD says further investigation leads them to this being an isolated incident between two separate, but associated parties, and they are working to identify all individuals involved in the shooting.
Witnesses in the area of the shooting told RCPD at least one male suspect ran east from the scene following the shooting.
Anyone in the area of the Sunset Zoo who may have security camera footage or witnessed anything suspicious on Monday are asked to contact RCPD at (785) 537-2112 or Crime Stoppers at (785) 539-7777.
RCPD says there is no reason to believe there is any threat to the Sunset Zoo, Manhattan High School or the community.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
