Manhattan City Commissioners have given staff the green light to look at a possible ongoing common consumption area for a segment of downtown from the hours of 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. It could include the area with Manhattan Town Center on the east, the Plaza, and stretches of Poyntze Ave. and 4th Street. To become effective an ordinance would have to be approved in the future.
In a CCA a person could walk from one business to another in the district with an alcoholic drink in a marked cup obtained in the common consumption area.
The majoriy of the governing body agreed with the CCA idea but one commissioner, Karen McCullough, did express concern about liability. Discussion with the board of the Farmer's Market held downtown could also occur as part of the investigation on a CCA.
Commissioners were informed that Aggieville doesn't want an ongoing common consumption area right now while construction on streetscape and roadways is under way. When that is complete they may return to the City in the 2026-27 time frame for discussion.
