JoAnn Vargo, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away at home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 70. JoAnn was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in the small town of Elma, where she developed a lifelong love of books, history, and learning. She had a deep appreciation for the stories of American pioneers and could often be found reading about their lives or studying old photographs and letters, especially those written by her cherished mother, Norma.

In 1995, JoAnn made her home in Kansas, where she continued to nurture her passions for coffee, crossword puzzles, and good conversation. She found joy in the simple things—quiet mornings with a book, a fresh cup of coffee, and moments spent with her loved ones.

JoAnn was married to her husband, John “Jack” Vargo, whom she built a life with in Junction City, Kansas. She was the proud mother of two children: Joe Vargo of Junction City, Kansas, and Susan Sterling (Travis Wood) of Wichita, Kansas. Her granddaughter, Cece, brought her immense joy, and JoAnn treasured every moment spent with her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Norma and Erwin Moessinger, and her sister, Linda Kerr. She is survived by her sister, Susie (Ray) Anderson of New York; her niece, Jen (Jason) Ekberg; her nephew, Jeff (Amanda) Anderson; and many friends who will miss her thoughtful and humorous personality.J

JoAnn’s family would like to thank those who supported her during her illness. Her strength and resilience will remain with those who knew her.

Cremation will take place and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor JoAnn by enjoying a good book, working a crossword puzzle, or sharing a story with someone you love.
