Mervin Wiese passed away at home April 15, 2025 after an extended illness. He was 79 years old.Merv was born in Oklahoma to Elmer and Jeanette Wiese. He was a lifelong University of Oklahoma Football fan.He graduated high school and attended and graduated from Southwest Oklahoma College. He earned his masters degree in 1977.He started his teaching career in 1968 at Ulysses High School where he taught history and government and coached basketball.His teaching career was interrupted when Uncle Sam invited him to join the Army and vacation in Vietnam for a year. He served in the 4th Infantry Division from 1969-1970. He earned the combat infantry man badge and two purple hearts.
He resumed his teaching career at Ulysses until 1982 when he moved to Wichita and began teaching at Andover High School.In Wichita he married his wife Kay (she survives). They had a son, David. (He survives).The family moved to Chapman in 1989 to begin his teaching and coaching career at Chapman High School. He coached the girls basketball team from 1989-1994 and in 1992 the team placed 4th in the 4A State Tournament. They did even better in 1993 when they placed 2nd.He retired from coaching in 1994 and teaching in 2001. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf and watching sports. In his later years he found friends and fellowship at the Chapman Senior Center. Visitation will be April 21, 2025 from 5-7 P.M., at the Londeen-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Chapman. Memorials may be made to the Chapman Senior Center and may be dropped off at the funeral home or mailed to Londeen-Overlease Funeral Chapel, PO Box 411, Chapman, Kansas 67431.
