Dementia Friendly Manhattan, a new initiative of the Flint Hills Wellness Coalition, kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Rockin' K meeting room at 1880 Kimball Ave. The focus of the effort is to make Manhattan a more dementia-friendly place to live. Attendees can also join virtually on Zoom if they are unable to attend in person.

Special guest Susan McFadden, PhD, and author of Dementia-Friendly Communities; Why We Need Them and How We Can Create Them, will speak about the importance of supporting people with dementia and their caregivers and how to implement a dementia friendly community.

Dementia friendly communities are places where community members strive to support those living with dementia and their care partners and empower them to remain living independently for as long as possible.

Dementia Friendly Manhattan Community Coordinator Anna Biggins, said that the kick-off event on Oct. 24 "is only the beginning of our efforts to effectively and compassionately meet the needs of the people in our community who are experiencing the impacts of dementia."

Dementia Friendly Manhattan's Oct. 24 kick-off event and initial organizing efforts are paid for by a grant from the Memorial Hospital Association. To RSVP for the event, visit Flint Hills Wellness Coalition on Facebook or send an email to  [email protected]
