RCPD: Shooter in recreation center parking lot acted in self defense

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement are investigating a shooting in Manhattan.

Just before 8p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of shots fired in the 900 block of Yuma Street, according to a media release.

Officers located a 23-year-old man from Manhattan who had been shot in the parking lot of the Douglass Activity Complex. The victim was transported by EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, where he was air-lifted to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the shooter, a 26-year-old man, acted in self-defense. There is believed to be little to no relationship between the individuals involved, and this appears to be an isolated incident with no threat to public safety.

This is an open and ongoing investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available.

Riley County police said Wednesday night that officers were on the scene of a shooting in the 900 block of Yuma. One person had been shot and transported to Via Christi for treatment of their injuries. The public was urged to  find alternate routes to avoid the 900 blocks of Yuma and Fort Riley Boulevard. This was believed to be an isolated incident and there was no current danger to the public.
