FHDC to host 'Solar-bration on Monday, April 8th

MANHATTAN - The Flint Hills Discovery Center(FHDC) will host a special event on Monday, April 8th during the total solar eclipse, which will be visible over a small portion of North America. 

Manhattan is expected to experience approximately 85% of the totality from the eclipse.

FHDC will have all exhibits open, along with access to astronomy themed activities as part of the celebration of the solar eclipse. Access to the exhibits and themed activities are included with paid admission.

Themed activities include: 

  1. Bear’s Shadow: Learn how shadows form and move with a light source.
  2. Pinhole Viewer: View the solar eclipse by creating a pinhole viewer.
  3. Solar Eclipse Diorama: create an interactive solar eclipse model.
  4. Space Quest: Explore different objects in space in this “Guess Who” style game.
  5. Star Seeker: Create a star chart to identify constellations throughout the year.

Safe viewing of the solar eclipse will be accessible from Blue Earth Plaza from 12:30 pm to3:30 pm, with Jan Johnson, the Library Services Consultant from North Central Kansas Library System providing the opportunity to view the eclipse using a Sun Spotter which is donated by the donated by Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL).

There is no cost to view the solar eclipse; inside activities are included with admission to the Discovery Center.
