MANHATTAN - Just a reminder, as you celebrate Independence Day, Manhattan Fire Department has posted fireworks safety reminders.

The safest way to view fireworks, is to attend a professional fireworks show.

Mishandled fireworks can cause risk of burns, serious injuries and fires.

In the United States, approximately 12,000 fires were caused by fireworks in 2021, resulting in $59 million in property damage.

"We want you to have a safe and fun holiday. So some things we try to say is make sure you're clear away from houses, buildings, vehicles, dry grass. Never hold fireworks in your hand when you're lighting... also, please be considerate of your neighbors or pets from lighting fireworks. Not everyone enjoys them." said Captain Wade McKinley, Manhattan Fire Department.

Some suggested alternatives for celebrating Independence Day include:
-Using glow sticks, silly string, and noisemakers to celebrate
-Make patriotic crafts and decorations
-Throw a birthday party for the USA.

In the city of Manhattan, fireworks can legally be discharged until midnight on July 4th.
