Paul “Duke” Shurson, 70, died peacefully in his home on April 27, 2025. He was born Nov. 17, 1954 to Melvin and Dorothy (Carpenter) Shurson.
Paul was a colorful member of Abilene High School Class of 1972, and received his degree from K-State. He loved music and played the guitar, piano, trombone, and harmonica. He wrote quirky songs and poems. Paul was a golf course superintendent both in Wyoming and in Kansas. Later in life he took up woodworking, beginning with whimsical wind-up toys and moving on to beautiful wooden containers.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents and several beloved dogs. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Jane (Jon) Kenary and Lorraine (Rich) Geist, and his brother John (Kris) Shurson, and seven nieces and nephews and their children.There will be a memorial service for Paul on Saturday, June 7th at 2 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church (6th and Buckeye) with light refreshments following. His ashes will be interred next to his parents at Abilene Cemetery.
Donations in Paul’s memory may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Central Kansas Mental Health, or the American Diabetes Association. Danner Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
