1st SGT Wilbur "Bill" Smith Sr., 80, passed away on April 7, 2023, with family by his side. Born in Carol, Maine, to Percy and Gertrude (Robinson) Smith.
He was drafted in to the Army where he served 2 years
in Korea after returning home he got out of the Army realizing his love
for his country, re-enlisted to serve a total of 24 years active duty.
Time served in various stations across Europe, retiring as a 1st SGT.
After his military retirement, he worked civil service for 15 years.
Then moved onto managing the American Legion in Greenleaf, Kansas. He
was an amazing cook and baker. He believed in duty first. He loved his
country and his family. He enjoyed bowling with two 300 (perfect)
games, working on vehicles, hunting, fishing, and never passed up a game
of cards.
Wilbur is preceded in death by his parents: brothers; Vernon, Randloph
and Edward: sisters; Helen Shedd, Mary Phurde: step son: Mario Madrid:
grandson; Garrit Wayne Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria: Son; Wilbur (Bill) Smith Jr.:
daughter; Karen Burkholder (Donnie): stepsons; Joe Madrid (Jeanine) and
Vincent: grandchildren; Jackie, Jessica, Talia, Kody, Dee, Chelsolyn,
Vicente and Lorissa.
Danner Funeral Home in Abilene is handling the arrangements. A Private family services will be held at a later date.
