Sister Christina Meyer died April 15, 2023, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS. She was 86 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 years.
She was born in Quinter, KS on September 8, 1936, to Jacob and Theresa Phlieger Meyer, the fifth of ten children, and was baptized Christina Marie.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 2, 1952. On August 14, 1952, Christina received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Mary Cleopha, later changing back to her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1953 and final vows on September 9, 1957.
In 1968, S. Christina received her BS from Marymount in psychology; followed by a MS in education in 1972 from Kansas State University in Manhattan. In 1988 she received a Certificate in Graduate Studies in applied theology from Graduate Theological Union and School of Applied Theology. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Chicago, IL; Silver City, NM; Aurora, IL; Fairbury, NE; Gorham, KS; and Gladstone, MI.
S. Christina served on the Executive Council of the Congregation from 1979 to 1987. She served in several capacities in parish ministry after leaving the Council. She also served in Congregational Ministries as Director of Mission Appeals and Co-Coordinator of the CSJ Justice and Peace Center. In May, 2021, Sister Christina retired to the Motherhouse.
S. Christina Meyer was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She is survived by five sisters and one brother.
A Bible Vigil Service will be held April 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Marcia Allen as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be April 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Father Barry Brinkman presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
