Donald G. Hecke, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (May 24, 2023).
Don was born May 20, 1937 in Campbell Hill, Illinois. He married Linda Saville on June 28, 1963 in Manhattan, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 19, 2009.
Mr. Hecke served his country in the U. S. Air Force and had been a member of the Manhattan and had been a member of the Manhattan American Legion Post No. 17. He loved racing the area dirt tracks, driving for 13 years. He enjoyed watching Nascar and Outlaw Sprint races. Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson were among his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed fishing and competing in antique car shows, winning several shows in the area.
Don was a dedicated and hard worker. He managed several auto salvage businesses over the years, beginning at A-1 Auto Salvage and lastly for M & M Auto Salvage until his retirement at age 82.
Survivors include a son, Lee Hecke (Amy) of Wamego; a daughter, Donna Hecke (Bryan) and two grandchildren, Connor Hecke and Tyler Hecke.
Mr. Hecke was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Rae Lin Hecke; two brothers, Earl H. Hecke and Wilbert Hecke; and a sister, Dorothy Shevetz.
Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Private family services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home to be given to the family who will decide on a charity at a later date.
