Thunderstorm dumps water on the region

Rainfall totals of more than four inches were reported by the National Weather Service in south central Geary County by 10 p.m. Sunday. More rain fell later in the night. Roadways in the southeast part of the county were the site of flash flooding.

Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges noted just before midnight that there was a lot of water going across roadways, especially Humboldt Creek Road three to five miles south of Junction City and Grandview Plaza. While traveling to that area Berges drove up on the water going across the roadway. "It was probably three to four inches deep, probably about 150 feet wide going very extreme." The emergency manager said that's why authorities tell people to stay home and not be out, especially when it's dark. It's hard to see the water going across the roadway, and if there is don't go across it. Turn around because it's moving too fast and can move vehicles into the ditch."

Other problem areas cited by Berges included Clarks Creek Road and McDowell Creek Road, which are areas south and east of Junction City and Grandview Plaza.

A flash flood warning was also in effect for northeastern Dickinson until 2:45 a.m. Up four inches of rain had also fallen in that area. Riley County received rain but did not have flash flood warnings Sunday night.

Police dispatch confirmed that Junction City firefighters have responded to a house fire at 408 West 7th Sunday evening. No one was injured. The call came in to dispatch at about 10:15 p.m.

Geary County emergency personnel checked flooded roadways and for any possible stranded people Sunday night. Heavy rains fell on southeast Geary County Sunday evening.

Emergency Management Director Garry Berges told motorists to remain off roads in southeastern Geary County for now. The storm brought substantial rainfall and some hail with it. More could occur overnight into Monday.

Berges noted Sunday evening that at one location between Rural Fire Station One and Moyer Ranch Road water extended about 150 feet across the roadway.
