MANHATTAN— Fire investigators have determined the fire that occurred early Monday morning was caused by used staining rags that ignited due to spontaneous combustion, according to a media release from the Manhattan Fire Department.
Two cats were rescued by firefighters and provided oxygen by Riley County EMS, and another cat was found deceased due to smoke inhalation.
The one-story building was occupied by one occupant at the time of the fire who was able to exit the structure without injury. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $40,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Valerie Carrol of Manhattan.

MANHATTAN—Authorities are working to determine the cause of an early morning fire at a home in Manhattan.
At 1:17 a.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 1726 Colorado Street for a report of a garage on fire, according to a media release.
Upon arrival, crews found a single-story home with fire showing in the attached garage and heavy smoke coming from the interior of the residence.
Fire crews contained the fire to the garage within 15 minutes. A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus. Three cats were removed from the structure, 2 were alive and were provided oxygen by fire crews, and one was found deceased due to smoke inhalation.
