Geary and Dickinson County rural firefighters responded to the School Creek area on the west side of Milford Lake Monday evening for a grass fire.
Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, said authorities received a text message from the National Weather Service about a hot spot. "Which means they detected on radar a smoke plume with heat signature."
There was a large area of grassland on Corps of Engineers property that burned. No one was injured.
Geary County responded with six units and two supervisor vehicles while Dickinson sent approximately four to five trucks. "We had a lot of fire on the ground. It jumped the road in a couple of places inside the School Creek area but with all the help we were able to get it put out," said Berges. He noted that one farmer also helped disk up some ground to help prevent the fire from jumping farther.
The amount of acreage that burned will be determined on Tuesday.
