Agnes Helena Garten was born August 27, 1933 in Ada, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Lena (Gronewoller) Smith. She passed away Friday, November 10, 2023 in Abilene at the age of 90.
Agnes graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Salina. She was the school secretary at St, Andrew’s School in Abilene for 50 years before retiring a short time ago. Agnes was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, a past 4-H member in Saline County, A 4-H leader of Sand Springs Rustlers, Rural Life member, won the Master Farmer Homemaker award and was the past Grand Marshall for the Central Kansas Free Fair.
On December 29, 1953 Agnes was united in marriage to Frank I. Garten in Salina. He passed away July 19, 1996. Agnes is survived by her daughters: Ellen Haslouer (Chuck) of Hope; Mary Koster of Wichita; Ann McConkey (Richard) of Topeka; and Karen Orr (Troy) of Assaria. Her son's: Carl Garten (Christine) of Salina; Casey Garten (Cindy) of El Dorado Hills, California; and Bruce Garten (Jessica) of Belgrade, Maine. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Marilyn Garten of Manhattan, Kansas and 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Along with her husband Frank, Agnes was preceded in death by her son Mark, grandson, Jarett Kelley and siblings Donald, Doris, Cecelia and Carol.
Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the St. Andrews Catholic Church with Father Peter O'Donnell as Celebrant. A Parish Rosary will be 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the church with the family receiving friends following. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St, Andrews School or to the 4-H Scholarship Fund and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd Street, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
