Independence Day festivities are just around the corner! Many Americans associate Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks. Fireworks seem festive and harmless, but can be dangerous to you and your family.
Some safe ways to celebrate Independence Day include:
- Using glow sticks, silly string, and noisemakers to celebrate.
- Making patriotic crafts and decorations with your family.
- Throwing a birthday party for the United States!
If you choose to purchase and use consumer fireworks, the following rules must be followed within the City limits, according to the Manhattan Fire Department:
- Fireworks may only be discharged from 8 a.m. to midnight on Tuesday, July 1 through Friday, July 4.
- It is unlawful to throw or discharge fireworks toward any person, vehicle, or building.
- It is unlawful to discharge fireworks in streets, alleys, or parks, or anywhere else on public property.
- It is unlawful to ignite aerial luminaries, sometimes called “sky lanterns” or “floating lanterns.”
- It is unlawful to ignite bottle rockets and M80s in the state of Kansas.
- Fireworks should only be discharged under adult supervision.
- Always read the fireworks label for proper firing instructions!
- Use fireworks only in a clear area, away from houses, buildings, and dry grass.
- Fireworks should not be ignited in glass or metal containers.
- Never hold fireworks in your hand when lighting!
- Keep observers at a safe distance.
- Have a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher available in the immediate area.
- Soak used fireworks overnight in a bucket of water prior to disposal.
