Riley County Protective Home Program provides temporary housing

Posted Dec 10, 2021 4:33 PM

Registration is now open for the next certification training in Riley County’s Protective Home Program. Administered by Riley County Community Corrections, the program provides temporary placement of children who are in Police Protective Custody (PPC) because of abuse and/or neglect. Protective Homes, on very short notice, take in and care for children for up to 72 hours.

The Riley County Protective Home Program was launched in 2017 to allow the Department of Children and Families, local law enforcement, and child advocates time to assess each situation and determine a course of action that is in the best interest of the child or children in need. The local program serves Riley County and neighboring communities.

To become a Protective Home, volunteers must complete a certification process that includes eight hours of training, a background check, and a home inspection.

There are currently 16 homes providing care, with 3-4 that have been consistently available to respond.

The next class dates are January 20 and January 27, 2022 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Riley County residents who are interested in becoming a Protective Home should fill out the application online at https://www.rileycountyks.gov/protectivehome or contact Sara Darnell at (785) 565-6873 or sdarnell@rileycountyks.gov.
