Richard Duane Avery II, age 72, died September 12, 2023, at his residence in Wakefield, KS. He was born to Richard and Grace (Gulley) Avery, in Shiloh Valley, Illinois, on January 20, 1951. Richard grew up in Rolla, Missouri. He graduated from Rolla High School at seventeen and quickly enlisted in the Army. Richard began his military career in 1968 as a tank loader and driver. He quickly worked his way up in rank and was a Tank Platoon Sergeant and Commander by 1974. From 1979 through 1985 he was stationed in West Germany working for headquarters as an Intelligence Sergeant and Tanker. Richard went back to Fort Riley and finished his career in 1993 holding a Non Commissioned Officer position in charge of Crage Fitness Center. He earned his associate degree through Central Texas College during his time in service. Richard retired after 25 years of service and earned many commendations and medals some include a national defense service medal, meritorious service medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and a Bronze Star.
Richard was a collector of all things. He was a firm believer that one was never enough. He enjoyed college football and was an avid Chief fan. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Richard is preceded in death by his parents.

Grandchildren: Haylie and significant other Colton Drake of Wymore, NE; Bailee and Emily Avery of Wakefield, KS; Brenton Ross of Jonesboro, AR and Kayson Croney of Oakland, AR
Celebration of Life: Will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Richard and Tiffany Avery’s Home, 1755 6th Road, Wakefield, KS 67487
