Glennard Andrew Yordy, Sr., 93 years of age, died at the Leonardville Nursing Home on March 25, 2024.
He was born to Dwight and Irma Yordy on August 6, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan. When he was 6 years of age, the family moved to the farm near Brookville, KS. His elementary education was in a one room schoolhouse and finished his high school education at Brookville, KS. He later married Joan Darlene Stirn Yordy of Tescott, KS on October 29, 1949.
He made a career in the Air Force and rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was stationed in Missouri, Colorado, Texas, South Carolina, Germany, Philippine Islands, Lawrence, Kansas, Libya and Massachusetts before retiring in 1972 after 21 years and 9 months. Post retirement, he made Manhattan, KS his home, was a long-time active member of the Temple Baptist Church and loved to garden.
He worked for various companies in retirement: e.g., Beneficial Corporation, Wonder Bread, McCall’s Pattern Company as chief of security, driving cars for dealerships and the Job Corp support staff, where he was affectionately known as “Grandpa.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Stirn Yordy, his father Dwight Yordy, his mother Irma Yordy and sister, Darlene Yordy Phelps.
He is survived by: five children: Glennard Yordy, Jr., Terrie Jo Quick, LaVaughn Yordy, Pamela Yordy, and Alan Yordy; and three sisters, Margaret Keaton, Marolyn Qualls, and Carolyn Fehring. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Manhattan, Kansas on April 13, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Manhattan Baptist Church, 510 Tuttle St., Manhattan, KS. His remains will be laid to rest in the Prairie Mound Cemetery at a later date.
