LTC (RET) Herbert D. Harris, 88, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. Cremation will take place. A graveside service with military honors will take place 10 a.m. Friday, May 20, 2022 at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.
Herbert was born November 29, 1933, in Pawtucket, R.I. the son of Herbert Darling and Evelyn Claire (LaFrance) Harris.
Herbert enlisted in the United States Army on February 25, 1953. While on active duty, he graduated with honors from the St. Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. On July 31, 1976, he retired from the United States Army, a Lieutenant Colonel, in Field Artillery.
Following his military service he moved with his family to Geary County where he remained the rest of his life. In late 1977, he joined the staff at Central National Bank and was employed there until 1993.
He married Marie Linnea Swenson, on November 4, 1955, at Camp Funston, Fort Riley, KS.
Survivors include his wife Marie of the home; one son, John P. Harris and his wife Susan of Chapman, KS; one daughter Missy Stelzner and her husband Rich of Topeka, KS; two grandsons, John L. Harris and Kiefer Stelzner and one granddaughter, Kristen L. Becker; one great-granddaughter, Belle Grace Becker; one brother, Charlie Harris; one sister, Evelyn Harris.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
