MFD Open House and Fire Prevention Week

Posted Oct 04, 2021 3:04 PM

The Manhattan Fire Department will host its annual Open House on Sunday, October  from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m at the Headquarters Fire Station located at 2000 Denison Avenue.  Activities for all ages will include rides on Old Engine 1, search and rescue K-9 Duke, and operation demonstrations.  Kids will have the chance to participate in a firefighter physical course to see if they have what it takes to be a firefighter.  A live side-by-side fire demonstration that shows the effectiveness of home fire sprinklers will take place at 2:00 p.m.

This week the Manhattan Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

  1. A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  2. A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  3. All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
  4. Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
  5. Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
