Grass fires occurred in an area west of Leonardville, and farther north near May Day Road and Wohler Road in Riley County on Wednesday. Both fires were put out.
Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, confirmed that his department was among those called to assist Riley County in controlling the blaze near Leonardville. "We responded with one supervisor vehicle and two fast attack units. " Berges also said a local farmer, Clint Kramer, provided assistance with a semi-truck. "He brought out 32-hundred gallons of water from Geary County to assist in the fire suppression."
Berges noted that people in a rural area southwest of Leonardville were at one point advised to evacuate, but that fire was extinguished.
