With Independence Day less than a week away, local first responders are reminder residents of how to be safe while enjoying fireworks over the holiday weekend.

The Riley County Police Department has posted reminders of the ordinances across Riley County explaining when and where fireworks can be used.

Additionally, Manhattan Fire Department reminds residents to have a water source, such as a bucket or garden hose nearby, in case the fireworks don't extinguish themselves.

As for shooting off fireworks, Manhattan Fire Department, says there are a few ways that are not only unsafe, but also against the law.

"Don't shoot them off towards people, don't point them in that direction, you can't throw them at anybody. Those are actually illegal or unlawful." Manhattan Fire Department, Capt. Lou Kaylor says.

Many fireworks can get really hot and be unsafe for children. MFD suggests having adult supervision when children are handling fireworks, including sparklers.

"Some safety tips: Don't hold them in your hand. Wear goggles when you light them off. Have adult supervision, if you're going to have a lot of children around. Make sure they are far enough away from buildings, and not under trees or under carports or garages or even inside for that matter." Kaylor says.

If you do have an emergency, whether it's an injury or fire caused by fireworks Manhattan Fire Department officials ask you to call 9-1-1 immediately so first responders will be dispatched to your area.
