RILEY COUNTY— The mayor of Manhattan resigned after he was arrested in connection with an alleged DUI crash that occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.
According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, an Infinity passenger vehicle driven by 72-year-old Winfried Butler, of Manhattan, struck Candlewood Liquor in the 3200 block of Kimball Avenue.
The total estimated loss in this matter is over $1,000. Butler was arrested and cited for driving under the influence. He met the requirement of a $750 bond and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.
After his arrest Butler resigned, according to a statement from fellow city commissioner Peter Oppelt. Mayor Pro Tem Susan Adamchak will now take over as mayor.
Butler was first elected to the Manhattan City Commission in April 2011, according to the city web site. He served as Mayor in 2014-2015 and 2021. He was re-elected to the Commission in 2021 for a four-year term.
