Riley County police said on September 2, at approximately 4:29 PM, corrections officers at the Riley County Jail discovered an unresponsive inmate.
EMS was alerted and responded to the scene. Despite immediate CPR efforts, the inmate, Michael Smith, 51, of Manhattan, was pronounced dead. The next of kin have been notified.
Iin May, Smith was arrested on requested charges that included Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body; Possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant; Criminal trespass; Remain in defiance of order by order, according to the RCPD arrest report.
In accordance with department policy and state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) was notified and responded to investigate. The KBI investigates all deaths that occur in Kansas prisons and jails unless the inmate who dies is being regularly attended by a physician, or the death is ruled natural by autopsy.
