The Mnahattan City Commission has voted 3-2 for an ordinance establishing a common consumption area for a segment of downtown.
It would run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. including the area with Manhattan Town Center on the east and stretches of Poyntz Ave. and 4th Street. There will be signs indicating the CCA boundaries.
In a CCA a person can walk from one business to another in the district with an alcoholic drink in a marked cup obtained in the common consumption area.
The commissioners voting in favor of the CCA were Jayme Minton, Susan Adamchak and John Matta. Opposed were Karen McCulloh and Peter Oppelt.
The city will need to apply to the state every year for a permit for the CCA boundaries. They hope to have the district in effect by mid July. Individual businesses could choose whether or not to participate.
