Allen Herbert Wood, age 84 of Wakefield, passed away Friday March 17, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.
He was born near Wakefield, Kansas, on October 21, 1938, to Horace William Wood and Pauline Leticia (Vanderwilt) Wood. His older sister was Nelva (Wood) Peck of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. His younger sister was Carol (Wood) Ebert of Wamego, Kansas.
Allen’s parents and sisters preceded him in death.
He attended grade school at Sunny Slope Country School, a one room school, in rural Clay County near Wakefield. He graduated from High School in 1956 from Wakefield High School. He attended one year of college at Kansas State University.
On September 5, 1958, he married Arlene Louise Berry, who died on August 6, 2019. They had four children: Mark Allen (Lucy) of Colby, Kansas; David Benton (Becky) of Cody, Wyoming; Lori Sue Wood of Junction City, Kansas; and Amanda Lynne Fitzgeralds (Troy) of Abilene, Kansas. Allen and Arlene had twelve grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Except for managing Sanborn Lumber Company in the mid-1960’s, Allen was a farmer all his life. He raised cattle and produced wheat, corn, soybeans, and livestock feed. He was a talented, self- taught, mechanic and fabricator. He enjoyed hunting especially in Wyoming. Allen enjoyed collecting firearms, shooting targets, and reloading shells. For the holidays, he enjoyed making cranberry relish to share with family and friends. Allen owned many dogs in his life, but a border collie named Ginger was his last and most loved one.
Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22nd, at the Milford Congregational Church with Pastor Dirk Westerman officiating.
Memorials may be made to the National Rifle Association (NRA) or the Milford Congregational Church and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
