Phase 10 starts today

Posted Oct 18, 2021 9:34 PM

Manhattan drivers were greeted with a new detour for their Monday morning commute.

Kimball Avenue will be closed from North Manhattan Avenue to Denison Avenue for Phase 10 of the North Campus Corridor project.

This phase of the project is expected to take about a year to complete, with completion and reopening planned just prior to the first 2022 home football game for Kansas State University.

This phase will improve not only the road surface but will also address storm drainage system, sidewalks, and notoriously tight Kimball Avenue curves between Denison and Manhattan Avenues. According to City data, some 20,000 vehicles negotiate the curves each day. The project will improve this segment of the corridor by widening the street to include a raised center median in the curved sections of the roadway.

Phase 10 includes relocation of telecommunication lines and demolition of the old cattle bridge.

This $4 million phase of the project is funded primarily through an Economic Development Grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Bayer Construction estimates partial completion of this phase of the NCC by mid-August 2022, with one lane opening in each direction. Final completion is slated for December 2022.

Work on the NCC began in 2017 with completion of the final phase expected in 2024.
