Crews extinguish house fire

 At 10:52 a.m. on Thursday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 3208 Highland Circle for a report of smoke coming from a house. Upon arrival, crews found a single-story house with a fire in the basement. The fire was contained within 10 minutes of arrival. A total of 15 firefighters responded on 5 fire trucks with the last units clearing at around 1:00 p.m.  A pet turtle died as a result of the fire. 

The Fire Department said the single-story single-family dwelling was not occupied at the time of the fire. Loss is estimated at $15,000 to contents and $15,000 to the structure. The resident was able to remain in the structure.  The owner is listed as David and Mariah Covington of the same address,  The fire cause is accidental due to a heat lamp that was near the turtle enclosure.
