“What Speaker Johnson and Republicans are doing, you have to go back decades to find an example where the House — either chamber — decided not to meet.”

“When Congress decides to turn off the lights, it shifts the authority to the executive branch. “People say, why aren’t you negotiating with Schumer and Jeffries? I quite literally have nothing to negotiate,” Johnson said at one point.

“As I’ve said time and time again, I don’t have anything to negotiate with,” he said on day 13 of the shutdown. “We did our job. We had that vote.”

And besides he said of the GOP lawmakers, “They are doing some of their best work in the district, helping their constituents navigate this crisis.”

House lawmakers return for vote to reopen the government

WASHINGTON (AP) —The USS Gerald R. Ford has officially entered the U.S. Southern Command region, almost three weeks after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-cartels-hegseth-drugs-boat-strikes-6c3316b2852723e26c39dc701bba9d52">first announced he was ordering</a>&nbsp;the aircraft carrier to aid in the campaign against alleged drug smugglers,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fourthfleet.navy.mil/Press-Room/News/Article/4329586/gerald-r-ford-carrier-strike-group-enters-us-fourth-fleet/">according to a press release</a>.

However, since the region’s borders reach well into the Atlantic Ocean, coming within a few hundred miles of Africa, it’s not clear just how close the carrier or its accompanying destroyers are to Caribbean waters. Multiple military officials wouldn’t offer further location details when asked by The Associated Press.

The Navy’s press release said the Ford and three destroyers — the USS Bainbridge, USS Mahan, and USS Winston Churchill — will join seven other ships, including three that carry a Marine Expeditionary Unit made up of thousands of Marines, that have been in the Caribbean for months.

US Navy aircraft carrier group moves closer to Caribbean Sea

KEITH COUNTY, Neb— First responders rescued two hunters and a dog on Monday who were trapped in mud flats at Lake McConaughy’s Cedar View Area on Monday, according to a social media report from&nbsp; the Lake McConaughy Dive Rescue Team 

Nebraska Game and Parks responded to assist with an airboat.&nbsp; Rescue crews in cold water survival gear removed on hunter from the mud and water and then another hunter and his dog were removed and brought to shore. 

Garden County EMS transported both hunters for treatment of hypothermia.&nbsp; Authorities released no additional details.

Agencies assisting included the Keith County Fire Department, the Keith County Sheriff's Office, Lewellen Fire Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, and Keith County EMS with a drone.

NEW YORK (AP) — Space weather forecasters issued an alert on Tuesday for incoming severe&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/northern-lights-auroras-solar-storm-915a2364b24679c63a07066f55c53ffa">solar storms</a>&nbsp;that could produce&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/how-to-catch-auroras-with-noaas-prediction-tool-5c20d61840754b8e81070c87160ef6ff">colorful northern lights</a>&nbsp;and temporarily disrupt communications.

In the past few days, the sun has burped out&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/solar-storms-auroras-northern-lights-ea7dea56d466cf199837b5e266c5d9c6">several bursts of energy</a>&nbsp;called coronal mass ejections that could reach Earth Tuesday night and early Wednesday. The potential severe geomagnetic storms could disrupt radio and GPS communications, according to forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

How bright the auroras are and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/auroras-northern-lights-solar-storm-9a3399d88ec0e14293f06e77d61099c4">how far south they are visible</a>&nbsp;will depend on when the solar bursts get here and how they interact with Earth's atmosphere. The vibrant displays could be visible across much of the northern U.S., and as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

The sun is at the maximum phase of its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sun-solar-flare-earth-ed204eef352560f09b8366bee05e2381">11-year activity cycle</a>, making the light displays more common and widespread. Colorful northern lights have decorated night skies in unexpected places and space weather experts say there are more auroras still to come.

Aurora displays known as the northern and southern lights are commonly visible near the poles, where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.

Skygazers are spotting the lights deeper into the United States and Europe because the sun is going through a major face-lift. Every 11 years, its poles swap places, causing magnetic twists and tangles along the way.

Last year, the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades slammed Earth, producing light displays across the Northern Hemisphere. And soon afterward, a powerful solar storm dazzled skygazers far from the Arctic Circle when dancing lights appeared in unexpected places including Germany, the United Kingdom, New England and New York City.

The sun’s active spurt is expected to last at least through the end of this year, though when solar activity will peak won’t be known until months after the fact, according to NASA and NOAA.

Solar storms can bring more than colorful lights to Earth.

When fast-moving particles and plasma slam into Earth’s magnetic field, they can temporarily disrupt the power grid. Space weather can also interfere with air traffic control radio and satellites in orbit. Severe storms are capable of scrambling other radio and GPS communications.

In 1859, a severe solar storm triggered auroras as far south as Hawaii and set telegraph lines on fire in a rare event. And a 1972 solar storm may have detonated magnetic U.S. sea mines off the coast of Vietnam.

Space weather experts aren’t able to predict a solar storm months in advance. Instead, they alert relevant parties to prepare in the days before a solar outburst hits Earth.

The vibrant displays could be visible across much of the northern U.S., and as far south as Alabama and Northern California.</p><h2>How northern lights happen</h2><p>The sun is at the maximum phase of its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sun-solar-flare-earth-ed204eef352560f09b8366bee05e2381">11-year activity cycle</a>, making the light displays more common and widespread. Colorful northern lights have decorated night skies in unexpected places and space weather experts say there are more auroras still to come.</p><p>Aurora displays known as the northern and southern lights are commonly visible near the poles, where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.</p><p>Skygazers are spotting the lights deeper into the United States and Europe because the sun is going through a major face-lift. Every 11 years, its poles swap places, causing magnetic twists and tangles along the way.</p><p>Last year, the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades slammed Earth, producing light displays across the Northern Hemisphere. And soon afterward, a powerful solar storm dazzled skygazers far from the Arctic Circle when dancing lights appeared in unexpected places including Germany, the United Kingdom, New England and New York City.</p><p>The sun’s active spurt is expected to last at least through the end of this year, though when solar activity will peak won’t be known until months after the fact, according to NASA and NOAA.</p><h2>How solar storms affect Earth</h2><p>Solar storms can bring more than colorful lights to Earth.</p><p>When fast-moving particles and plasma slam into Earth’s magnetic field, they can temporarily disrupt the power grid. Space weather can also interfere with air traffic control radio and satellites in orbit. Severe storms are capable of scrambling other radio and GPS communications.</p><p>In 1859, a severe solar storm triggered auroras as far south as Hawaii and set telegraph lines on fire in a rare event. Severe solar storms bring view of northern lights to Kansas

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations following a rollover crash that injured a juvenile passenger.

Just after noon Nov. 2, deputies responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash in the 9700 block of Sunflower Road in De Soto, Kansas, according to a media release. The driver, Jeyson Carabantes-Deras, 25, overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll over. A 6-year-old female passenger was seriously injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Deputies determined Carabantes-Deras appeared intoxicated, and DUI testing was conducted. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Carabantes-Deras remains jailed charges on a $500,000 bond on requested aggravated child endangerment, aggravated battery, leaving the scene of an injury accident, driving while suspended and other traffic violations.

Man arrested after Kan. rollover crash injured 6-year-old

WASHINGTON (AP) —The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended an order blocking full SNAP payments, amid signals that the government shutdown could soon end and food aid payments resume.

The order keeps in place at least for a few more days a chaotic situation. People who depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to feed their families in some states have received their full monthly allocations, while others have received nothing.

The order will expire just before midnight Thursday.

The Senate has approved a bill to end the shutdown and the House of Representatives could vote on it as early as Wednesday. Reopening the government would restart the program that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-congress-trump-641e7e2324f261da72395b604d9540e8">helps 42 million Americans</a>&nbsp;buy groceries, but it’s not clear how quickly full payments would resume.

The justices chose what is effectively the path of least resistance, anticipating the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-update-80ef7cada7b3c0559aca38886efd8f90">federal government shutdown</a>&nbsp;will end soon while avoiding any substantive legal ruling about whether lower court orders to keep full payments flowing during the shutdown are correct.

Beneficiaries in some states have received their full monthly allocations while in others they have received nothing. Some states have issued partial payments.

How quickly SNAP benefits could reach recipients if the government reopens would vary by state. But states and advocates say that it's easier to make full payments quickly than partial ones.

Carolyn Vega, a policy analyst at the advocacy group Share Our Strength, also said there could be some technical challenges for states that have issued partial benefits to send out the remaining amount.

In Pennsylvania, full November benefits went out to some people on Friday. But Jim Malliard, 41, of Franklin, said he had not received anything by Monday.

Malliard is a full-time caretaker for his wife, who is blind and has had several strokes this year, and his teenage daughter, who suffered severe medical complications from surgery last year.

That stress has only been compounded by the pause in the $350 monthly SNAP payment he previously received for himself, his wife and daughter. He said he is down to $10 in his account and is relying on what’s left in the pantry — mostly rice and ramen.

“It’s kind of been a lot of late nights, making sure I had everything down to the penny to make sure I was right,” Malliard said. “To say anxiety has been my issue for the past two weeks is putting it mildly.”

The political wrangling in Washington has shocked many Americans, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shutdown-snap-volunteer-efd96724c418e31f6cc96c974ba5d215">some have been moved to help</a>.

“I figure that I’ve spent money on dumber stuff than trying to feed other people during a manufactured famine,” said Ashley Oxenford, a teacher who set out a “little food pantry” in her front yard this week for vulnerable neighbors in Carthage, New York.

The Trump administration chose to cut off SNAP funding after October due to the shutdown. That decision sparked lawsuits and a string of swift and contradictory judicial rulings that deal with government power — and impact food access for some 42 million Americans.

The administration went along with two rulings on Oct. 31 by judges who said the government must provide&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/snap-shutdown-lawsuits-deadline-4af8b0dec6cd31cddd023cc99c131b73">at least partial funding</a>&nbsp;for SNAP. It eventually said recipients would get up to 65% of their regular benefits. But it balked last week when one of the judges said it must&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/snap-benefit-november-shutdown-086c15b0818e0cafae85090b34f44ba3">fund the program fully</a>&nbsp;for November, even if that means digging into funds the government said need to be maintained in case of emergencies elsewhere.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/snap-food-government-shutdown-trump-a807e9f0c0a7213e203c074553dc1f9b">U.S. Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;agreed to pause that order.

An appeals court said Monday that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/snap-benefits-trump-administration-demands-undo-states-d433f20df4d461db506e0d327a58d3c1">full funding should resume</a>, and that requirement was set to kick in Tuesday night before the top court extended the order blocking full SNAP payments.

Congressional talks about reopening government

The U.S. Senate on Monday passed legislation to reopen the federal government with a plan that would include replenishing SNAP funds. Speaker Mike Johnson told members of the House to return to Washington to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-8-democrats-e83180c0b69642a00a234c244d9ea76e">consider the deal</a>&nbsp;a small group of Senate Democrats made with Republicans.

President Donald Trump has not said whether he would sign it if it reaches his desk, but told reporters at the White House on Sunday that it “looks like we're getting close to the shutdown ending.”

Still, the Trump administration said in a Supreme Court filing Monday that it shouldn’t be up to the courts.

“The answer to this crisis is not for federal courts to reallocate resources without lawful authority,” Solicitor General D. John Sauer said in the papers. “The only way to end this crisis — which the Executive is adamant to end — is for Congress to reopen the government.”

The coalition of cities and nonprofit groups who challenged the SNAP pause said in a court filing Tuesday that the Department of Agriculture, which administers SNAP, is to blame for the confusion.

“The chaos was sown by USDA’s delays and intransigence," they said, "not by the district court’s efforts to mitigate that chaos and the harm it has inflicted on families who need food.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man charged in a deadly shooting in Wichita attended a plea hearing on Monday.

James Standefer, 37,&nbsp; pled guilty to murder in the 2nd degree (reckless), for the death of&nbsp; 43-year-old Jesse Dean Rau, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Law enforcement investigating one of several weekend homicides in Wichita have made an arrest after a standoff.

In September, the Sedgwick County Fugitive Warrant Section deputies located Standefer at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of W. Shade Lane in Wichita, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

As a precaution, deputies briefly evacuated or sheltered residents in the complex.&nbsp; The SWAT team was called to the complex. After a short standoff, Standefer surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody at 5:40 p.m.

Just before 3 a.m., the day before his arrest, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received an automated crash detection alert from a mobile device in the area in the 7700 Block of South Broadway near Haysville, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Branden Stitt.

Haysville Police officers, along with Sedgwick County EMS and Fire District 1, responded and located an SUV that had crashed into a tree.

Inside the vehicle, first responders found 43-year-old Jesse Dean Rau of Haysville suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died. A female passenger sustained minor injuries from the crash.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe at least three individuals were inside the SUV when a disturbance occurred, during which Rau was shot by another occupant.&nbsp;

The SUV then left the roadway and struck a tree. The suspected shooter, believed to be Stadefer ran from the scene. He is scheduled for sentencing on January 7, according to district attorney's office.

Plea deal: Kan. man killed victim during fight in SUV

MITCHELL COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 11:30a.m.&nbsp; Tuesday in Mitchell County.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp; 1991 Buick Century driven by Brian&nbsp;Christianson, 69, Hunter, was northbound on Kansas 181 just south of Timothy Trail.&nbsp; &nbsp;The driver attempted to pass a 2005 International semi driven by Ronald&nbsp;Dubbert, 52, Hebron, Nebraska, in a no passing zone. The semi failed to&nbsp;maintain its lane and crossed the center line when negotiating a curve. 

The Buick left the roadway and when it reentered, it made impact with the semi. The semi then left the roadway, entered the east ditch and rolled.&nbsp;

A passenger in the semi identified as 84-year-old Mary&nbsp;Dubbert, 84, Tipton, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Roberts Funeral Home.

EMS transported Ronald Dubbert to the Mitchell County Hospital. Christianson was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

                    </figure><p>MITCHELL COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 11:30a.m.&nbsp; Tuesday in Mitchell County.&nbsp;</p><p>The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp; 1991 Buick Century driven by Brian&nbsp;Christianson, 69, Hunter, was northbound on Kansas 181 just south of Timothy Trail.&nbsp; &nbsp;The driver attempted to pass a 2005 International semi driven by Ronald&nbsp;Dubbert, 52, Hebron, Nebraska, in a no passing zone. The semi failed to&nbsp;maintain its lane and crossed the center line when negotiating a curve. </p><p>The Buick left the roadway and when it reentered, it made impact with the semi. The semi then left the roadway, entered the east ditch and rolled.&nbsp;</p><p>A passenger in the semi identified as 84-year-old Mary&nbsp;Dubbert, 84, Tipton, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Roberts Funeral Home.</p><p>EMS transported Ronald Dubbert to the Mitchell County Hospital. Christianson was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.</p>

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A rural Kansas county has agreed to pay a little more than $3 million and apologize over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marion-kansas-newspaper-raid-aca057365ea3925328a69acd615c9893">a law enforcement raid on a small-town weekly newspaper</a>&nbsp;in August 2023 that sparked an outcry over press freedom, the paper's editor said Tuesday.

Marion County was among multiple defendants in five federal lawsuits filed by the company that publishes the Marion County Record, its publisher, the estate of his late mother Joan Meyer, the paper’s co-owner, employees of the paper and a former Marion City Council member whose home also was raided.

Eric Meyer, the paper's editor and publisher, told The Associated Press he is hoping the size of the payment is large enough to discourage similar actions against news organizations in the future.

“The goal isn’t to get the money. The money is symbolic,” Meyer said. “The press has basically been under assault.”

Sheriff Jeff Soyez issued an apology that mentioned the publisher and his late mother Joan Meyer by name, along with former council member Ruth Herbel and her husband.

“The Sheriff’s Office wishes to express its sincere regrets to Eric and Joan Meyer and Ruth and Ronald Herbel for its participation in the drafting and execution of the Marion County Police Department’s search warrants on their homes and the Marion County Record," the sheriff's statement said.

The Marion County Commission approved the agreement Monday after discussing it in private for 15 minutes.

The raid triggered a national debate about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marion-county-record-kansas-newspaper-raid-f1e49c4e542ddb3cf19c9ca02a0a21fb">press freedom</a>&nbsp;focused on Marion, a town of about 1,900 people set among rolling prairie hills some 150 miles (240 kilometers) southwest of Kansas City, Missouri. Also, Meyer's mother, who co-owned the newspaper and lived with him, died the day after the raid of a heart attack, which he blamed on the stress of the raid.

A search warrant tied the raid -- which was led by Marion’s police chief -- to a dispute between the newspaper and a local restaurant owner who had accused the Marion County Record of invading her privacy and illegally accessing information about her and her driving record. Meyer has said believed the newspaper’s aggressive coverage of local politics and issues played a role and that his newsroom had been examining the police chief’s past work history.

It’s been bouncing around lately, coming off Monday’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-ai-earnings-trump-f2bee27796f9401e5cd8d88c06785f93">vigorous rebound</a>&nbsp;following its first losing week in four.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 559 points, or 1.2%, to a record, surpassing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-trump-china-earnings-7507a6e0d264874721af27cc7533544a">its prior all-time high set two weeks ago</a>. Helping to lead the market was Paramount Skydance, which jumped even though the entertainment giant reported revenue and profit for the latest quarter that fell short of Wall Street’s expectations.

It was the company’s first earnings report since Skydance closed its acquisition of Paramount in early August, and investors appeared to be encouraged that it raised its cost-cutting target to at least $3 billion from the previous $2 billion. Its stock leaped 9.8%.

Close behind was FedEx, which climbed 5.4% after it increased its forecast for profit in the current quarter. Instead of expecting growth from just the summer, the delivery company now also expects profit to rise in this year’s holiday-shopping season from last year's.

They helped pull the S&amp;P 500 back within 0.6% of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/investors-401k-what-to-do-bb0663da4643e8c3dbe08a4092482aa5">its all-time high</a>, which was set two weeks ago.

They also helped offset a 3% drop for Nvidia, which is Wall Street’s most influential stock because of its massive size.

A major investor in Nvidia, Japanese technology giant SoftBank, said it had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-softbank-son-nvidia-ai-chips-d8a10172850628c317a214280a4d94c9">sold its entire stake in the AI chip company</a>&nbsp;for $5.83 billion last month. SoftBank is not giving up on AI. It’s still focusing on OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.

A big question on Wall Street has been whether investors will push the frenzy around AI stocks further. Their sensational growth has been one of the top reasons the U.S. market has hit records despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-jobs-openings-unemployment-inflation-federal-reserve-60b8f481cdbc56f96829817a2992e508">a slowing job market</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tariffs-inflation-trump-prices-economy-wall-street-fed-consumers-280a2fd30de3bb44bd87cd0248082322">still-high inflation</a>. But their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/investors-401k-what-to-do-bb0663da4643e8c3dbe08a4092482aa5">prices have shot so high</a>&nbsp;that critics say they’re&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ai-bubble-warnings-bank-of-england-imf-b15e54f6d06992371ee39b27f4e6da3a">reminiscent of the 2000 dot-com bubble,</a>&nbsp;which ultimately burst and dragged the S&amp;P 500 down by nearly half.

CoreWeave, whose cloud platform helps customers running AI workloads, fell 16.3% even though it reported a smaller loss for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

Its revenue also topped expectations, and financial analysts praised its momentum. But investors seemed to focus instead on supply-chain issues that are delaying a data center and pushing some of CoreWeave’s revenue further into the future.

Back on the winning side of Wall Street, BigBear.ai rose 6.1% after reporting better results for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also said it would buy AskSage, a generative AI platform built for national-security agencies and other highly regulated areas, for $250 million.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 added 14.18 points to 6,846.61. The Dow rallied 559.33 to 47,927.96, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 58.87 to 23,468.30.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose in Europe following a mixed finish in Asia.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.1% even though SoftBank climbed 2%. Besides the sale of its Nvidia stake, the tech giant also reported a much bigger profit than analysts expected.

The Dow rallies over 550 points to a new record

ByHeart, a manufacturer of organic baby formula, recalled all of its products sold nationwide Tuesday, days after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/infant-botulism-formula-byheart-recall-fda-cdc-91019e385a98a2fceb26a12005ea3fbb">some batches</a>&nbsp;were recalled in an expanding outbreak of infant botulism.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/byheart-baby-formula-botulism-recall-98ad391ac5606c980a012d35f5f7637c">At least 15 babies in 12 states</a>&nbsp;have been sickened in the outbreak since August, with more cases pending, according to state and federal health officials. All of the infants were hospitalized after consuming ByHeart formula, officials said. No deaths have been reported.

ByHeart officials expanded the voluntary recall from two lots announced Saturday to all products in consumers' homes and in stores. That includes ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula and Anywhere Pack pouches of powdered formula. Parents and caregivers who have the formula in their homes “should immediately discontinue use and dispose of the product,” Kuehn said.

Company officials said they enacted the unusual recall “in close collaboration” with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration “despite the fact that no unopened ByHeart product has tested positive” for the contamination.

California health officials earlier confirmed that a sample from an open can of ByHeart baby formula fed to an infant who got sick contained the type of bacteria that causes the toxin linked to the outbreak.

“This action underscores ByHeart’s core mission: protecting babies above all else,” the company said in a statement.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating 84 cases of infant botulism detected since August. Of those, 36 consumed infant formula, with a more than a third who received ByHeart formula, the agency said in a statement.

“This information shows that ByHeart brand formula is disproportionately represented among sick infants in this outbreak, especially given that ByHeart represents an estimated 1% of all infant formula sales in the United States,” the FDA statement said.

ByHeart produces formula powder at a plant in Allerton, Iowa, and then ships it to a site in Portland, Oregon, for canning and distribution, Kuehn said. U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspectors were at the Portland plant Monday, she added.

In addition to the broad recall, the company said it is testing every batch of formula with an independent third-party laboratory, providing health officials full access to its sites and sharing results with regulators as they become available.

Infant botulism is a rare and serious illness that occurs in babies under age 1, whose gut microbiomes are immature. It is caused when the infants consume bacteria that contain spores that produce a toxin in the gut. Symptoms include constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelid, weak muscle tone, difficulty swallowing and breathing problems, among others.

Babies who develop those symptoms need immediate medical attention. The sole treatment for the infection is BabyBIG, an IV medication made from blood plasma of people immunized against botulism.

ByHeart baby formula recall expanded as Infant botulism outbreak grows

WASHINGTON —President Trump observed Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery.&nbsp;It is the first Veterans Day since he returned to office.

Trump and Vice President JD Vance both wore gloves and overcoats against the cold in Washington, and the president also had a red scarf.

Trump stepped forward and laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then reached out and touched the wreath before taps was played.

He, Vance and other top administration officials saluted throughout the music.

🎥President Trump observes Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery

KANSAS CITY —A second person injured in a crash that occurred October 29, in Kansas City, Missouri has died.

Just before 12:30p.m. on that Wednesday, a silver Dodge Journey was southbound on Broadway in Kansas City, Missouri, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina. The driver of the Dodge suffered a possible medical emergency and accelerated through the intersection of Linwood and Broadway. 

The vehicle traveled off the roadway to the right, struck an unoccupied parked Lexus and traveled up onto the sidewalk. The Dodge then struck a steel light pole, the Vietnam Memorial and continued traveling southbound through the grass and struck the side of the VFW building.

EMS transported both the driver and front seat passenger of the of the Dodge to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both were reported in very critical condition.

The passenger of the Dodge Journey, an adult female,  was pronounced deceased on the night of October 29, according to Becchina.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Monday, the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office reported the involved driver had succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash and the driver was pronounced deceased by St. Lukes Hospital staff.

 Police released no additional details including the name of the victim. This is fatality #57 compared to #80 last year in Kansas City, Missouri.

KCPD: Driver dies days after crash that killed passenger 

DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a search in Lawrence.

During the noon hour on Monday,&nbsp; police&nbsp; were attempting to find a man who witnesses say threatened a couple with a firearm, then took off, according to a social media report from the Lawrence Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to 23rd and Louisiana just before noon and got a description of the suspect and additional evidence.

About an hour after the initial call, the suspect was spotted near 23rd and Naismith Drive. When officers attempted to approach him, he ran into a nearby grocery store. 

 Officers set up a perimeter, while others entered the business and located the suspect. Officers safely arrested him, took him to the hospital to get checked out because he was complaining of stomach issues, and then to the Douglas County Correctional Facility. 

There were no injuries reported during the entire incident.

Police did not release the name of the suspect or possible charges.

A 2.8 magnitude quake struck just before 6p.m. three miles northeast of Wilson, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Kansas Geological Survey reported a 3.2. magnitude quake in Russell County at approximately the same time.

The Kansas Geological Survey also reported two additional quakes measuring 2.6 and 2.1 in Russell County on Sunday morning and Monday morning.

The Ellsworth County Sheriff's office has not received any calls about the quakes.

She had made it a priority to extend subsidies for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-care-subsidies-congress-shutdown-democrats-republicans-bb3464820a347fd2c0399e78e335881e">health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act</a>, but she had also expressed reservations about voting to shut down the government.</p><p>In the end, she settled for a pledge from Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota to hold a vote in December on the health subsidies.</p><p>“This was the only deal on the table. It was our best chance to reopen the government and immediately begin negotiations to extend the ACA tax credits that tens of millions of Americans rely on to keep costs down,” she said at a news conference following the Sunday night vote.</p><h2>Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois</h2><p>Durbin is another senator who will be retiring after a long Senate career. Durbin holds the No. 2 position in Democratic leadership and broke ranks with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York after saying that the shutdown had caused too much pain for the American people.</p><p>In a statement before the vote, Durbin, who argued that Republicans are still to blame for the shutdown, said, “This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce their shutdown’s hurt. Not only would it fully fund SNAP for the year ahead, but it would reverse the mass firings the Trump Administration ordered throughout the shutdown.”</p><h2>Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia</h2><p>Kaine, a former Virginia governor, was one of the last Democrats to join the group willing to vote to advance to the bill. He said that, as late as Sunday evening, he was checking over the legislation with his staff. Angus King of Maine</h2><p>King is an independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party and is a former governor. He had been voting since the outset to reopen the government, yet he also played a key role in the negotiations, including often hosting senators for talks in his Capitol basement office.</p><p>He has consistently said that he is opposed to using a government shutdown as a negotiating tactic, yet he also wanted Congress to extend the health care subsidies. After Republicans rejected a proposal from Schumer to extend the ACA tax credits for one year, King said it showed that the shutdown was not working.</p><p>“The question was: Does the shutdown further the goal of achieving some needed support for the extension of the tax credits? Our judgment was that it would not produce that result,” King said.</p><h2>Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada</h2><p>Rosen has grown increasingly irate as the shutdown has worn on and Republicans refused to give in to Democrats’ demands on the ACA credits. As&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/thanksgiving-air-traffic-shutdown-delays-ae216380cdf694c518bd2a4b0830eaea">air travel was increasingly affected</a>&nbsp;by the shutdown, the economy of her home state of Nevada, a political swing state, was also under threat.</p><p>In a statement, Rosen said that Trump and fellow Republicans “are weaponizing their power in alarming ways to inflict unimaginable pain and suffering on working people, like fully withholding SNAP benefits and gutting our tourism industry by grinding air travel to a halt.”</p><h2>Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada</h2><p>Cortez Masto is another Democrat who has been voting to reopen the government. She also emphasized that the impact to travel had been particularly harmful to Nevada and that the impacts to food assistance programs provided a new sense of urgency. She said that lines at food banks were the longest she has seen since the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>“The stories were horrific,” she said.</p><p>___</p>
