MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman met with media members Tuesday for the first time during preseason camp — and the first time in person since February 2020.

“Crazy how far we’ve come and where everything’s at and we’re all still masked up,” Klieman said. “It’s good to have everybody here, not doing this all over Zoom.”

Twenty-five days out from the Wildcats’ season opener, Klieman says more than 80% of the team is vaccinated.

“We’re not out of the woods, as everybody else isn’t,” Klieman said. “We’re masked up in here for meetings. We’re masked up when we go through the line to get our food and in the training room and stuff. Then we don’t have them on for practice, but we still want to make sure we don’t have any kind of an outbreak.”

Tuesday also marked Klieman’s first time at the podium since&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/07/30/sec-welcomes-texas-oklahoma-after-boards-accept-invitations-2/" target="_blank">Texas and Oklahoma accepted invitations</a>&nbsp;to join the SEC in 2025, leaving eight teams including K-State in the Big 12.

“Kansas State is still going to play football, and we’re still going play Power 5 football, and we’re going to have a great schedule,” Klieman said. “I’ll let the people that are above me figure out how that’s all going to happen. I don’t think it’s going to happen very quickly. I think this is something that all of us in the profession as coaches saw coming, probably three years ago, even five years ago I saw it coming, that there’s going to be some drastic changes in the landscape of college football over the next three to five years, but it doesn’t happen overnight.

Regardless of the timeline, Klieman said he feels K-State is positioned well moving forward.

“The fact that we’re committed,” Klieman said. “The administration is committed. The fanbase is committed. The program is committed. That we’ve got a new indoor coming. We have some of the best facilities in college football. So, once again, trying to get our guys ready to go in fall has been more of my main emphasis right now. Let the other people handle that stuff, but we’ve got great tradition here, a tradition of excellence, of top-notch, top-25, top-15, sometimes top-10 teams.”

In other major Wildcat off-season news, star quarterback Skylar Thompson is back on the field after&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2020/10/12/k-state-qb-skylar-thompson-out-for-the-season-after-injury/" target="_blank">suffering a season-ending injury</a>&nbsp;against Texas Tech last season. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri-native announced&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2020/12/20/k-state-quarterback-skylar-thompson-will-return-for-2021-season/" target="_blank">he’d return to Manhattan</a>&nbsp;in December.

Through five days of fall camp, Klieman is impressed with his QB, who has made some “pretty special” plays.

“The game has just slowed down so much for him, and he feels comfortable with the offensive line,” Klieman said. “He feels comfortable knowing where certain guys are going to be, between Phillip (Brooks) and Malik (Knowles) in particular, and Landry (Weber) and Seth (Porter), guys that he’s worked with for a long time. Nick Lenners is healthy this year and playing at a nice level. I just see a comfort level out of him (Thompson), and a confidence level that I’m excited to see what he’s going to do.”

True freshman Will Howard stepped in for Thompson last season. The week after Thompson’s injury, Howard was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after leading K-State to a win over TCU.

With Thompson back, Howard’s snaps will likely be limited in 2021 — but, Klieman says, he’ll be ready if his name is called.

“Knock on wood that Skylar stays healthy so he can have a great senior year, but we have the utmost confidence to play Will at any time, whether that’s Skylar is nicked up or a situation dictates that,” Klieman said.

“It’s one of those things that if Will can help us, we’re going to play him the whole dang year,” he continued. " If we feel that Skylar is playing at such a high level that we have in our back pocket that he (Howard) could play four games, and still get that year back, that’s something that we have to continue to evaluate as a staff.”

K-State’s Klieman tackles Big 12 situation, team vaccination rate at first fall presser

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Kansas high school sports fans ejected due to interactions with officials will be suspended for the next game at that level, per a new rule adopted by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Fans cannot attend games at any level until the suspension is served. For example, if the suspension happened at a varsity game, they could not attend a JV game until after the next varsity game.

The suspension cannot be appealed. KSHSAA adds their board reviews all ejection reports.

Under the rule, schools can add additional sanctions on top of the suspension.

KSHSAA will keep its current requirement for ejected in students and coaches in place. Currently, ejected students must complete the NFHS Sportsmanship course, while coaches are required to take the NFHS Teaching and Modeling Behavior course before being reinstated.

Any participant (player, coach, spectator) who is ejected for making contact with an official or who is ejected for unsporting behavior directed toward an official, shall be subject to a nonappealable suspension from the next contest at that level and for all contests at any level (in that activity) until the suspension has been served. Local school Leadership may levy additional sanctions as they deem appropriate. The KSHSAA staff reviews all ejection reports.

“When I saw the line up of of who was playing this year, I realized they were definitely going to be the show tonight.” Todd Reesing, former Kansas quarterback, said. “But, it was a lot of fun to be out here. Obviously to see the level of talent, to see these guys shoot the ball around the way they move, I’m glad I stuck to football.”

But, the most important stars weren’t on the floor.

“You know, this place means the world to all of us that come back and show the love and support and the love that we got here, you’ve got to give it back” Devonte’ Graham, former Kansas guard, said.

Children battling cancer were honored during the Rock Chalk Roundball Classic. Thousands of dollars were raised to help their fight.

“Sports has the opportunity to inspire, Reesing said. “When we use that for a good cause like this, there’s nothing better.”

For the stars on the floor, playing for something bigger than sports was meaningful.

“It’s more what we got,” Graham said. “They’re the most courageous, strong individuals. It changes the way you look at life. Jayhawks greats honor children battling cancer in Rock Chalk Roundball Classic

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State sophomore running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;has earned a spot on his third preseason watch list in 2021 as he was named to the initial list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list, SPORTyler announced Thursday.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the nation’s college offensive player of the year who has ties to the state of Texas by either being born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Vaughn was one of 13 semifinalists for the award as a true freshman in 2020, a year he was named the National True Freshman of the Year by 247Sports, an Honorable Mention All-American and Freshman All-American by multiple outlets and the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn rushed for 642 yards and seven touchdowns on 123 carries last season to go along with 434 receiving yards on 25 catches and two touchdowns. He was one of only three players in the nation to tally at least 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards on the year, joining fellow running backs Travis Etienne (Clemson) and Najee Harris (Alabama), both of whom were first-round selections in the 2021 NFL Draft.

K-State reports to preseason camp on Thursday, and the Wildcats’ first practice is set for Friday. The doors to Bill Snyder Family Stadium will open to fans on Saturday as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/news/2021/8/2/fans-invited-to-saturdays-k-state-football-practice.aspx" target="_blank">for the final 45 minutes of practice</a>.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) - A Douglas Co. jury has found former University of Kansas men’s basketball player Silvio De Sousa not guilty on an aggravated battery charge.

The Douglas Co. District Attorney’s office confirmed the verdict to 13 NEWS, saying this ends the case.

De Sousa was accused of hitting a man in the face early New Year’s Day 2020 outside a bar in downtown Lawrence. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2020/11/12/alleged-de-sousa-victim-has-permanent-eye-damage/">victim claims</a>&nbsp;he can no longer see out of his eye because of the encounter.

Jury finds former KU player De Sousa not guilty

Few college football coaches know the mental and physical grind that comes with navigating an extended playoff better than Chris Klieman. The Kansas State coach was formerly at FCS juggernaut North Dakota State, where teams routinely play for national titles in a division where that means playing 15-plus games.

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;For the second time in as many seasons, Kansas State senior quarterback&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;has earned a spot on the watch list for the Manning Award, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Thursday.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

Aside from Thompson, other previous Wildcats up for the award include 2012 finalist Collin Klein and 2014 preseason candidate Jake Waters.

Thompson, who was injured in the third game of 2020 and out for the remainder of the season, is a career 30-game starter who ranks in the top 10 in school history of 15 career categories. He is just the second player in school history to throw for 5,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards – joining Ell Roberson – and with 979 more passing yards this year he can become the first to hit the 6,000/1,000 marks.

Thompson’s inclusion on the watch list for the Manning Award is his third of the preseason as he was also on the initial watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Wuerffel Trophy.

A product of Independence, Missouri, Thompson leads an experienced offense entering 2021 that returns 28 letterwinners and 11 players that made at least four starts in 2020. The Wildcats bring back every start along the offensive line from a year ago, 97.1% of its passing yardage and 78.4% of its rushing yardage.

Beasley will be joined at the Summer League tournament by former Wildcats&nbsp;Barry Brown, Jr.&nbsp;(Orlando Magic) and&nbsp;Xavier Sneed&nbsp;(Charlotte Hornets).

Beasley and the Trail Blazers open their Summer League schedule on Sunday (August 8) at 5 p.m., CT against Sneed and the Hornets on NBA TV. The Blazers will then play the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, August 10 at 10 p.m., CT on ESPNU followed by matchups with the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, August 12 at 5 p.m., on NBA TV and the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, August 14 at 8 p.m., on NBA TV.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor has been added to the College Football Playoff selection committee, replacing Texas AD Chris Del Conte. 

The CFP's announcement comes less than a week after Texas and Oklahoma announced they would be leaving the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference in 2025. The 13-member selection committee is comprised of mostly sitting athletic directors along with former players and coaches. 

Each Power Five Conferences is represented by an active athletic director. With Texas in the process of leaving the conference, the Big 12 nominated Taylor to replace Del Conte.

The team will play games on consecutive days on ESPN2 beginning with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, August 11 at 5 p.m., CT followed by the Boston Celtics on Thursday, August 12 at 6 p.m., CT. They will conclude the Summer League with a matchup against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, August 15 at 7 p.m., CT, which will air on NBA TV.

Following the four preliminary games of all 30 NBA teams, the two teams with the best records will meet in the Championship Game on Tuesday, August 17 at 8 p.m., CT. The remaining 28 teams will play a fifth and final game on either Monday, August 16 or Tuesday, August 17.

This will be Brown’s second stint in the NBA Summer League, having played with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2019. He averaged 7.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 6 games.

Brown recently finished his first professional season overseas, playing for Ludwigsburg in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), which is the highest level of professional basketball in Germany. He ranked third on the team in scoring (12.7 ppg.), while connecting on 50.3 percent from the field.

After finishing his K-State career in 2019, Brown signed a contract with the Timberwolves’ G-League affiliate – the Iowa Wolves – where he played in 43 games with 13 starts and averaged 13.6 points on 45.6 percent shooting, including 39.3 percent from 3-point range, to go with 2.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

The 2019 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection, Brown led the Wildcats in nearly every statistical category in 2018-19, including scoring (14.6 ppg.), double-digit scoring games (28), 20-point games (7) and steals (65). He left K-State in the Top 10 in 13 career categories, including first in games played (139) and steals (254), fourth in double-digit scoring games (91) and fifth in scoring (1,781).

Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia each had two honorees, while K-State and Texas had a selection. Eleven of the 13 individuals on the preseason team were 2020 All-Big 12 performers. The 2020 Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year were represented on the preseason ledger. TCU junior Grace Collins, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, was selected at forward while Defensive Player of the Year Jordan Brewster of West Virginia was recognized at defender. Oklahoma State’s three selections were midfielder Olyvia Dowell, defender Kim Rodriguez and midfielder Grace Yochum. There was a three-way tie at the goalkeeper spot with Baylor’s Jennifer Wandt, Texas Tech’s Madison White and West Virginia’s Kayza Massey. Two people with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press about the talks between Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and George Kliavkoff from the Pac-12. The Big 12 is trying to rebound after learning Texas and Oklahoma plan to leave for the Southeastern Conference in 2025. The Big 12 has to start looking at how to move forward without their flagship programs immediately.  The Pac-12 has not indicated it is in a rush to add members.

Sneed Joins Charlotte Hornets Summer League Team

MANHATTAN–&nbsp;Fans can get a sneak peak of the 2021 K-State football team this Saturday, August 7, as the Wildcats open the doors to Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the final 45 minutes of practice.

Gates to the stadium will open at 11:45 a.m. Fans are asked to park in the west lot and enter through Gates B or D.

The open practice will also lend another opportunity for fans to tour the Shamrock Zone as it will be open during the final 45 minutes of practice. Additionally, a table will be set up on the concourse inside Gate B for fans who want to purchase season or single-game tickets for the 2021 season.

K-State kicks off the 2021 campaign on Saturday, September 4 as the Wildcats take part in the Allstate Kickoff Classic against Stanford at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game, which will be broadcast by FS1, kicks off at 11 a.m.

The Wildcats open their seven-game home slate on September 11 by hosting Southern Illinois at 6 p.m. before taking on Nevada on September 18 at 1:05 p.m. Both of those games will be shown on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
