MANHATTAN –&nbsp;After leading Kansas State to its third Big 12 title with a 31-28 overtime victory over No. 3 TCU in the 2022 Big 12 Championship, fourth-year head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;has been named one of five finalists for the Bobby Dodd Trophy as the nation’s top head coach, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl announced Friday.

Klieman is joined on the list by fellow conference champion head coaches Willie Fritz (Tulane), Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Kirby Smart (Georgia) and Kyle Whittingham (Utah). Klieman is K-State’s first finalist for the award since Bill Snyder won it in 2012.

“These five coaches have found a way to set themselves apart by guiding their programs to historic seasons during another exhilarating year of college football,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Each of these men have left a significant mark on their respective universities, football programs and players, both on and off the gridiron, and truly embody all that this award stands for.”

Klieman, who holds a 30-19 record in four years in Manhattan, led the Wildcats to their first Big 12 title since 2012 and the 11th&nbsp;double-digit win campaign in school history. K-State will be in search of a school-record tying 11th&nbsp;win in the Sugar Bowl, a feat that been accomplished on seven occasions, most recently in 2012.

In addition to the 30 overall wins, Klieman has led the Wildcats to three victories over Oklahoma – ranked No. 6 in 2022, No. 5 in 2019 and No. 3 in 2020 – kept the Governor’s Cup trophy in Manhattan with four wins over in-state rival KU and has collected 20 Big 12 Conference wins.

Thanks to his 30 wins in Manhattan, Klieman holds a career head coaching record of 102-32 as his 76.2% winning percentage ranks fourth among current FBS coaches that have led programs for at least nine seasons, trailing only Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Alabama’s Nick Saban and James Madison’s Curt Cignetti.

The 2022 season was one of the ages as the Cats opened the year 2-1 in non-conference play, defeating regional rival Missouri while dropping a close 17-10 contest to Tulane, who went on to finish the season ranked 16th&nbsp;nationally and earned a berth in the AT&amp;T Cotton Bowl. Road wins at No. 6 Oklahoma and Iowa State jump-started Big 12 play, and following losses to ranked foes TCU and Texas, the Wildcats closed out the conference season with three-straight wins (and four of the last five) to earn a berth in the league title game and rematch with the No. 3 Horned Frogs. The overtime win against TCU propelled the Wildcats to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, their first New Year’s Six bowl since playing in the 2013 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Klieman has coached running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;to consecutive Consensus All-America campaigns, as Vaughn is just the second player in school history to earn the distinction twice (Chris Canty – 1995 and 1996). Klieman also saw defensive end&nbsp;Felix Anudike-Uzomah&nbsp;be named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2022, one of four All-Big 12 First Team selections.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Klieman came to K-State after capping his five-year stint as head coach at North Dakota State by winning his fourth national championship in 2018. He tied Jim Tressel (Youngstown State) for the most FCS National Championships as a head coach, while he was a part of seven national championships at NDSU, which was the most in FCS history at the time of his departure.

Klieman guided the 2018 Bison to a perfect 15-0 record, just the fifth team in FCS history to go undefeated and untied on the way to a national championship. North Dakota State also claimed that feat in 2013 when Klieman as the defensive coordinator.

Kansas State, which finished ninth in the final College Football Playoff Top 25, will take on fifth-ranked Alabama in the 89th&nbsp;annual Allstate Sugar Bowl inside Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The game will take place at 11 a.m. Dec. 31&nbsp; and be shown on ESPN.

K-State’s Klieman named finalist for Bobby Dodd Trophy

With the December portion of the season winding to a close, Rock Creek and Wabaunsee will battle it out on Friday, each looking to keep their respective ranking in an all-Manhattan area matchup.

The Mustangs come into this game at 2-2. ranked as the #9 team in Class 4A, while Wabaunsee enters at 2-1, ranked #10 in 2A.

Rock Creek has faced a gauntlet to open their season, taking on a pair of ranked opponents in Abilene and Clay Center. Despite the early-season tests and adversity, the Mustangs have remained vigilant and will be hungry to get back above .500 tonight.

“Other than the Abilene game we have been pretty good defensively,” Rock Creek head coach Justin Smith said. “I have been happy with the effort there. We still need to find someone that is willing to step up and score. We have really struggled to score and we have to find some guys that are going to step up there.”

On Wabaunsee’s side of the matchup, the Chargers have played well but are still looking to kick things up a notch heading into the break.

Our work ethic has been solid so far this year,” Charger head coach Christian Ulsaker said. “I think if you talked to our team they would agree we have not played up to our potential thus far, but they’ve owned that and are putting in the time to correct the mistakes we are seeing on film.”

While many teams around the state are using the month of December to establish their identity, Wabaunsee feels confident in who they are with a large group of returners and is working towards getting back to their peak level of play.

“We have seven seniors that understand their role on our team,” Ulsaker said. “Now it's just about getting games in to knock off more of that rust. We spend a lot of time in the gym, that's the only way to build your confidence. A player is not going to be confident with their shot if they do not practice it. The same can be said in regard to all other aspects of the game.”

Meanwhile, across town, Rock Creek is still fine-tuning their play, but has had real success despite this period of discovery.

“December is good for trying to find your identity, but we haven't done that yet,” Smith said. “We are still searching for our identity and what works for us.”

To take the next step and knock off a ranked area rival, Rock Creek will need to show excellence on the defensive end of the floor while working out the early-season wrinkles in their offense.

“They are well-coached and extremely disciplined,” Smith said. “They have some talented players that can score and handle the ball and do a really good job on the defensive end. It's a tough matchup for us, we have to do a better job trying to score with a purpose and we have to continue to defend the way that we have the last couple of games.”

Conversely, to keep their place in the 2A rankings and avoid falling to .500, Wabaunsee will have to value each possession against an aggressive Mustang defense.

“We have to be prepared for their pressure,” Ulsaker said. “They throw multiple presses at you throughout the game and they’re very athletic. Rock Creek has always had athletes, so we need to be better basketball players that display our basketball IQ. We have to limit our turnovers, finish through contact, and limit them to one shot.”

Tip-off between the Mustangs and Chargers is set for 7:30 pm at Rock Creek High School, following the girl's game at 6.

Ranked rivals collide as Rock Creek welcomes Wabaunsee

After starting their seasons on different notes, the Rock Creek and Wabaunsee girls’ basketball teams will meet in St. George tonight, each looking to close out the December portion of their season strong.

For the Lady Mustangs (4-0) it’s been smooth sailing so far as the #7 team in Class 4A looks to remain undefeated, while the Lady Chargers (1-2) have an opportunity to bounce an area foe and return to .500.

Rock Creek’s success has come on both ends of the floor so far, and their defensive flexibility has given them an edge, helping them hold all four of their opponents to under 35 points.

“Our two greatest strengths right now are our ability to effectively run three different types of defenses and our willingness to attack on the offensive end,” Lady Mustang head coach Adam Plummer said.

On the Wabaunsee side of the matchup, the Lady Chargers are still sorting out their identity early in the year, but have shown flashes of promise even amidst some serious early-season adversity.

“The best thing I’ve seen from this team is our depth and ability to sub at multiple positions,” Lady Charger head coach Trevor Keller said. “This group is very coachable and I am excited to see where we are at in March, but we still need more consistency from day to day and possession to possession.”

Much like Wabaunsee, Rock Creek has been finding their footing as well, frustrating opponents with stifling defense as the team finds itself on the other end of the floor.

“Our kids are growing in confidence and we’re getting closer to finding our identity for this group but that's a continuous work in progress until your season is completed,” Plummer said.

For Wabaunsee to march into town and steal a win from a ranked opponent, the Lady Chargers will need to force Rock Creek to go off-script while dealing with a fundamentally sound Lady Mustang squad.

“They have multiple players who can score and they do a good job of sharing the ball,” Keller said. “Defensively they’re active on and off the ball which leads to a lot of deflections and steals. We have to take care of the ball and make shots to limit their transition scoring opportunities. Defensively we have to guard without fouling, contest shots, and rebound.”

On the flip side, to remain undefeated and to continue climbing the 4A ladder, Rock Creek will need to stay sharp mentally against an opponent they’ve given a lot of respect to in the build-up to this game.

“Wabaunsee is scrappy and plays a variety of defenses to disrupt offensive continuity,” Plummer said. “We have to be the better team on things like loose balls, rebounds, and charges and recognize what defense they are in to properly attack. This is the most important game we’ve played this year and we need to mentally and physically prepare like we are playing for a championship.”

Tip-off between the Lady Mustangs and Chargers is set for 6 pm with the boy’s game to follow at 7:30.

7th-Ranked Rock Creek hosts Lady Chargers in Manhattan area matchup

Vaughn joins cornerback Chris Canty (1995 and 1996) as the only two-time Consensus All-Americans in school history. Last season he became the 11th&nbsp;player in K-State history to earn the distinction and the first since Tyler Lockett in 2014. Others on the list include Jordy Nelson (WR, 2007), Terence Newman (CB, 2002), Mark Simoneau (LB, 1999), David Allen (PR, 1998), Martin Gramatica (PK, 1997), Jaime Mendez (1993), Sean Snyder (P, 1992) and Gary Spani (LB, 1977).

To be in consideration for Consensus All-America level, a player must be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-America teams — American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America,&nbsp;Sporting News&nbsp;and Walter Camp Foundation. <a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State Football is celebrating its 2022 Big 12 title with the K-State Family by announcing a 19-stop Championship Trophy Tour beginning on Wednesday. The 2022 Big 12 Championship trophy will travel throughout the state of Kansas on a six-day tour, and the stops will include the opportunity for fans to take photos with the trophy.

“We can’t thank our fans enough,” head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;said. “Our crowds were electric all season and created an unbelievable atmosphere in Arlington. We were playing for them as much as we were for each other, and we are excited to share this championship with them.”

The trophy will make 19 stops visiting select K-State Catbacker Clubs between December 14-20. Fans are encouraged to share photos on social media using the hashtag #EMAW.

The Chapman Fighting Irish will host the Wamego Raiders tonight in an all-area showdown featuring two teams looking for another big December win.

The Irish are fresh off their first victory since the 2020-21 season after holding on to defeat Rossville 46-45 on Saturday to improve to 1-2.

“Chapman is well-organized and playing with a purpose,” Hemphill said. “They have good energy and outside shooting threats. We need to be more active and patient offensively, standing around and taking hard shots is not a good combination.”

For the Irish to get just their second victory in two years and their first over a ranked opponent, Chapman will have to value each possession and ensure that the Raiders don’t dictate the pace of this matchup.

“Wamego always plays tough defense and they will make it tough for us on offense,” Gruver said. “We have to value the ball, limit careless turnovers, and work together on the offensive end of the floor to run our offense and get great shots. Raiders travel to Chapman looking to build on December resume

After starting each of their seasons on the right foot, the Chapman and Wamego girls’ basketball teams will meet on the campus of the Lady Irish tonight, looking to keep the good times rolling in the month of December.

The Lady Raiders enter this contest undefeated at 3-0, ranked as the #2 team in Class 4A, while Chapman comes in at 2-1 amidst a resurgent 2022-23 start.

Much of Wamego's success has come from hampering opposing offenses, exemplified by holding Tonganoxie to just 15 points last week, and in playing an unselfish brand of offense.

“Our defensive pressure has been really good so far,” Lady Raider head coach Brian McIntosh said. “I think we've done a good job of keeping teams off balance. We are also sharing the ball well and passing up good shots for great shots.”

That defensive excellence has been a staple of the Lady Irish as well, who held Bishop Ward to just three points for the full 32 minutes last week at the Irish Classic.

While Chapman’s defense has stolen the headlines, it’s the Lady Irish offense that has stood out to Coach Wahlmeier, despite the occasional need for more efficiency.

“I’ve been impressed with our ability to score in multiple ways,” Wahlmeier said. We’ve gotten buckets inside, outside, and in transition. The girls’ confidence has increased and they're learning more and more of our system.”

For Wamego to collect a fourth consecutive win to open their season and maintain their hold on the #2 spot in Class 4A, the Lady Raiders will have to have to contend with Maya Kirkpatrick, who has had her way with opposing defenses in Chapman’s two wins.

“Coach Wahlmeier does a great job with his teams,” McIntosh said. “They are feisty and play hard. The Kirkpatrick girl is one of the best players in the league, so she will definitely be a focus for us. We need to play hard-nosed defense and force them into tough shots, keep them off the glass, and continue making the extra pass on offense.”

On the other side of this matchup the Lady Irish will have to contend with a deep Wamego roster, hungry to position themselves for another deep playoff run, but with that pressure comes an opportunity for Chapman to post a season-defining win.

Lady Raiders travel to Chapman looking to start their season at 4-0

STARKVILLE, MS(AP) —Mike Leach, the gruff, pioneering and unfiltered college football coach who helped revolutionize the passing game with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-college-football-sports-mike-leach-texas-dc84b9b6c1f92acb64d1c5f37f82dd59">the Air Raid offense,</a>&nbsp;has died following complications from a heart condition, Mississippi State said Tuesday. He was 61.

Leach, who was in his third season as head coach at Mississippi State, fell ill Sunday at his home in Starkville, Mississippi. He was treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, about 120 miles (200 kilometers) away.

“Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father and grandfather. He was able to participate in organ donation at UMMC as a final act of charity," the family said in a statement issued by Mississippi State. "We are supported and uplifted by the outpouring of love and prayers from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the hospital staff, and football fans around the world. Thank you for sharing in the joy of our beloved husband and father’s life.”

Leach fought through a bout with pneumonia late in this season, coughing uncontrollably at times during news conferences, but seemed to be improving, according to those who worked with him.

News of him falling gravely ill swept through college football the past few days and left many who knew him stunned,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Holgorsendana/status/1602140964742696961">hoping and praying</a>&nbsp;for Leach's recovery under grim circumstances.

His impact on college football over the last two decades runs deep and will continue for years to come.

Leach was known for his pass-happy offenses, wide-ranging interests — he wrote a book about Native American leader Geronimo, had a passion for pirates, a taught a class about insurgent warfare — and rambling, off-the-cuff news conferences.

Leach’s teams were consistent winners at programs where success did not come easy. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. And his quarterbacks put up massive passing statistics, running a relatively simple offense called the Air Raid that he did not invent but certainly mastered.

An interview with Leach was as likely to veer off into politics, wedding planning or hypothetical mascot fights as it was to stick to football. He considered Donald Trump a friend before the billionaire businessman ran for president and then campaigned for him in 2016.

He traveled all over the world and his curiosity knew no bounds. He most appreciated those who stepped outside of their expertise.

“One of the biggest things I admire about Michael Jordan, he got condemned a lot for playing baseball. I completely admired that,” Leach told The Associated Press last spring. “I mean, you’re gonna be dead in 100 years anyway. You’ve mastered basketball and you’re gonna go try to master something else, and stick your neck out and you’re not afraid to do it, and know that a lot of people are gonna be watching you while you do it. I thought it was awesome.”

As much as Leach enjoyed digging into topics other than football, he was excellent at the Xs and Os.

Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six.

Calling plays from a folded piece of paper smaller than an index card, Leach turned passers such as B.J. Symons (448.7 yards per game), Graham Harrell (438.8), Connor Halliday (430.3) and Anthony Gordon (429.2) into record-setters and Heisman Trophy contenders.

“You have to make choices and limit what you’re going to teach and what you’re going to do. That’s the hard part,” Leach told the AP about the Air Raid’s economical playbook.

Chiefs outlast the Broncos

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was 48.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.

Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on the spot and then took him out on a stretcher, said Keir Radnedge, a veteran British sports journalist who was working nearby at the time.

The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” it said in a statement.

Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated for a decade then started his own website, was a major voice in introducing professional soccer to an American public more used to seeing the sport as a school-level game. He also brought a critical eye to the organizational bodies of the international sport.

He “really helped put soccer on the mainstream sports map in the States,” Radnedge said.

“Grant had a strong moral compass, on where sports should be and how sport ... should help set standards for people,” he said. “There was never any doubt that Grant was on the side of the good guys in wanting soccer to make the best of itself.”

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday on his website that he had&nbsp;<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22">visited a medical clinic</a>&nbsp;while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”

Wahl wrote that he tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

“I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” he wrote.

Wahl tweeted on Wednesday that he had celebrated his birthday that day.

“We could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists,” the U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement. “Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, tweeted that she was thankful for the support of her husband’s “soccer family” and friends who had reached out.

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/celinegounder/status/1601404727014879232?s=20&amp;t=Wpv4uCqNxr74RB-kYxrn-w">I’m in complete shock</a>,” wrote Gounder, who is an associate professor at New York University School of Medicine, an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital Center and a CBS News contributor.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/StateDeptSpox/status/1601419687619067904">in a tweet</a>&nbsp;that American officials were in touch with Qatari authorities “to see to it that his family’s wishes are fulfilled as expeditiously as possible."

<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/an-unexpected-detention-by-world">Wahl wore a rainbow T-shirt in support of LGBTQ rights to the United States' World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21</a>&nbsp;and wrote that security refused him entry and told him to remove the shirt. Gay and lesbian sex is criminalized in Qatar, a conservative Muslim emirate.

Wahl wrote he was detained for 25 minutes at Ahmed Bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, then was let go by a security commander. Wahl said FIFA apologized to him.

Among Wahl’s work before he began covering soccer exclusively was&nbsp;<a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/2002/02/18/ahead-of-his-class-ohio-high-school-junior-lebron-james-is-so-good-that-hes-already-being-mentioned-as-the-heir-to-air-jordan">a Sports Illustrated cover story</a>&nbsp;about LeBron James in 2002, when James was a junior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron, Ohio.

“He was always pretty cool to be around. He spent a lot of time in my hometown of Akron,” James said in Philadelphia after the Los Angeles Lakers lost in overtime to the 76ers. “Any time his name would come up, I’ll always think back to me as a teenager having Grant in our building down at St. V’s. It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best. May he rest in paradise.”

A voter at times in FIFA’s annual awards, Wahl was among 82 journalists honored last week by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

“His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996 and worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website.

Wahl also worked for Fox Sports from 2012-19.

His death at the World Cup left fellow journalists covering the games stunned.

“You come to a World Cup as a journalist to work, to share the stresses, the pressures but also the enjoyments and the fascination of it — and to share that with your readers, your listeners, your viewers. That’s what Grant was doing, that’s what he enjoyed doing. Everybody recognized that enthusiasm in him,” Radnedge said.

“So for him to not be with us anymore at such a young age, that’s an immense shock.”

The Wildcats scored the last six points of the first half for a 39-24 lead and had the first 13 of the second to make it 50-24. Ebert had six of those 19. 

The Mavericks went scoreless for 7:36 and without a field goal for almost 10 minutes. Kansas State outscored UMKC 25-7 in the third quarter as the Mavericks went 2 of 7 with 14 turnovers. Jocelyn Ewell led UMKC with 14 points.
