KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brett Veach knew he was utilizing the NFL draft's biggest cliche at the scouting combine in February, when the Chiefs general manager insisted that the Super Bowl champions would take "the best player available" when they were on the clock.

The best player available wound up matching their biggest needs over three days of selections. The Chiefs added to their pass rush in the first round with Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah, gave Patrick Mahomes another playmaker in the second round with SMU's Rashee Rice and some protection up front in the third with Oklahoma offensive tackle Wanya Morris.

The final four selections Sunday provided some much needed depth: Virginia Tech safety Chamarri Conner in the fourth round, Stephen F. Austin linebacker BJ Thompson in the fifth, Texas defensive tackle Keondre Coburn in the sixth and Ball State cornerback Nic Jones in the seventh to wrap up a hometown draft held at Union Station near downtown Kansas City.

"There's always a sense of what you need," Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi admitted, "but we're really looking at the best value on the board. So the first night we took Felix — obviously a pass rusher, you can't get enough of those guys. And then we came back and we knew we wanted to take a receiver in the second round early, and we moved up for Rice. And you know, we were able to get a tackle in the third, so we felt good about filling the needs but also staying true to the board."

In other words, that cliche about taking the best player available had some element of truth to it.

But the Chiefs also knew there were specific areas they needed to target.

They had to release Frank Clark early in the offseason to create some salary cap space, and Carlos Dunlap became a free agent, so they needed some help rushing the passer. Charles Omenihu provided a veteran presence, but the Chiefs were eager to get a bookend for last year's first-round pick, George Karlaftis, and they found it just down the road.

Anudike-Uzomah grew up in Kansas City before turning into the Big 12's defensive player of the year at Kansas State.

"Frank Clark is one of my favorite pass rushers, watching him, and I was like, 'Listen, if he left, I could definitely have input for the team,' especially because I'm a young rusher and I could learn from the people in front of me," he said. "It's honestly surreal, and I'm glad to be a part of the Chiefs and glad to be part of a winning culture."

The Chiefs traded up in the second round to select Rice, who is aggressive after the catch in the same mold as JuJu Smith-Schuster, who left in free agency. The Chiefs also lost Mecole Hardman, making it a priority to add another pass catcher to a group headlined by Kadarius Toney and second-year pro Skyy Moore.

"You're getting a playmaker. You're getting someone who really wants to be a part of the Chiefs' program," said Rice, who caught passes from Mahomes at some impromptu workouts in Texas and got the MVP quarterback's seal of approval.

"I can't complain about a great quarterback," he said. "I'm going to be able to build my relationship with him."

Mahomes will need to establish a good relationship with Morris, too.

The Chiefs lost Orlando Brown Jr. when they were unable to come to terms on a long-term deal with the franchise left tackle, then they lost right tackle Andrew Wylie when he signed a lucrative contract in free agency. The Chiefs opened the checkbook to bring in Jawaan Taylor, and plan to move him from the right side to left, but that still left an opening on the offensive line.

Morris is expected to compete with Lucas Niang and others for that starting job throughout the summer and training camp.

"You know, he's long, he's athletic, he's got the feet. Now he's just got to put everything together," Borgonzi said, "and we feel comfortable with our room here that he'll learn from some of the guys here."

After the three biggest holes were plugged the first two days of the draft, the Chiefs spent Saturday on some luxury picks.

Conner could see playing time immediately after safety Juan Thornhill left in free agency. Thompson is an athletic linebacker who could play a variety of special teams roles. Coburn is a 332-pound space-eater in the defensive line who could free up Chris Jones to make plays. Ball State's Nic Jones can provide depth in the defensive backfield.

"I think Day 2 and Day 3 are really where personnel staffs can distinguish themselves," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said, "and Brett's staff has certainly done that in recent years. We look back to last year and the number of players that we were able to select in the later rounds who ended up making a big contribution last year all the way to the Super Bowl."

Chiefs address biggest needs during hometown NFL draft

MINNEAPOLIS — Jhoan Duran's wild pitch allowed Edward Olivares to score the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning, and the Kansas City Royals ended a nine-game losing streak at Target Field with a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Olivares doubled twice and walked on four pitches from Duran (0-1) leading off the ninth. Olivares stole second, and Michael Massey walked for the first time in 81 plate appearances this season when Duran committed a pitch-clock violation with a full count.

Nicky Lopez sacrificed and Duran bounced a 1-0 curveball off the mitt of catcher Ryan Jeffers, the ball bouncing to the warning track in front of the first-base dugout.

Kansas City (7-21) won for just the third time in 15 games as Scott Barlow hung on for his fourth save. Carlos Correa and Jorge Polanco singled with one out, Byron Buxton took a called third strike and Trevor Larnach hit a game-ending comebacker. The Royals had not won at Minnesota since last May 28.

Minnesota went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners, matching its season high. The AL Central-leading Twins had won five of their previous six games.

José Caus, Taylor Clarke, Aroldis Chapman (1-1) and Barlow allowed one run over the final 3 2/3 innings, a day after the bullpen gave up one hit in four innings. In its past seven games, Royals relievers have allowed five earned runs in 25 innings.

Chapman got his first win with the Royals.

Polanco thought he hit a line drive home run in the first inning and, with the crowd cheering, started a home run trot. However, the ball ricocheted off the top of the wall near the right field foul pole and right fielder Nick Pratto threw to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who tagged a shocked Polanco as he got to second base. A video review showed the ball missed clearing the wall by inches.

Buxton homered in the seventh off Clarke for a 2-1 lead, a ball that skipped off the top of the left-field wall, caromed off a short fence just past the flower bed and back onto the field. Buxton stopped at second base, but after a brief huddle by the umpires, a home run was signaled.

Brad Keller's wild pitch allowed Minnesota to score its first run in the fourth, Lopez had a tying RBI single in the fifth and Salvador Perez had a tying RBI single in the eighth.

Keller gave up one run, five hits in 5 1/3 innings, threw a pair of wild pitches and walked five, one shy of his career high. He has 16 walks over 13 1/3 innings in his last three starts.

Bailey Ober, recalled from Triple-A St. Paul and taking the slot of injured Kenta Maeda, allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

Twins: INF Kyle Farmer, hit on the face by a fastball on April 12, is expected to play some rehab games next week. Manager Rocco Baldelli said Farmer is "mostly done" with dental work and has been taking swings and fielding. … Maeda was placed on the on the 15-day IL retroactive to Thursday with a right triceps strain.

Minnesota RHP Sonny Gray (3-0, 0.62) looks to extend his strong start in Sunday's series finale. Kansas City plans to start RHP Brady Singer (2-2, 6.67).

Royals win 3-2 on wild pitch, ending 9-game skid at Twins

On the heels of a 45-38 victory over the Southwest Kansas Storm, the Salina Liberty will return to Tony’s Pizza Events Center to close out their homestand in a non-league tilt with the Queen City Insane Asylum.

Going into this week's action, the Liberty hold a league record of 5-2, sitting a game and a half out of first and two and a half games ahead of the next closest team in fifth.

Salina also holds both the reigning CIF Offensive Player of the Week and the reigning Special Teams Player of the Week, after another strong kicking day for James Kazalski and an excellent debut for newly signed quarterback Ed Crouch.

“He had a pretty good debut and he’s stabilized our quarterback position,” O’Neal said. “You see his arm and ability to throw with both power and touch but you also saw how he can run with straight-line speed or shake-and-bake guys. If I had to sum it up in one word I was impressed, and we know he’s only going to get better.”

With a roster ravaged by injury, this week's exhibition matchup will allow the Liberty to take some time to get guys right, but will also provide them with an opportunity to test their depth as the final pieces of their contender fall into place.

“We’ll have a couple players that we’ll use this week to rest up and get healthy but we also have several guys that I’m excited to see and evaluate with some substantial playing time in a game like this,” O’Neal said.

Among those players is another fresh face at QB in Nick Eilers, who will get his first real shot this Saturday against the Asylum.

In their pursuit of perfection, Salina has highlighted taking care of the football as their biggest point of emphasis in this game, following a bit of a shaky performance last week.

“We need to cut down on our turnovers,” he said. “We had way too many against Southwest Kansas and that can’t happen. That’s the number one thing we’re focusing on this week.”

Kickoff between the Liberty and Asylum is scheduled for 6:35 PM at Tony’s Pizza Events Center, and as always the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) courtesy of Eagle Radio.

MINNEAPOLIS — Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco and Jose Miranda homered as the Minnesota Twins stayed hot at the plate with an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday.

Kansas City loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but Jorge López struck out Nick Pratto on a full-count pitch for his second save.

Salvador Perez had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Royals. Pratto added three singles and two RBIs, and Edward Olivares doubled twice, tripled and scored three runs.

The Twins have scored 33 runs in their last five games after starting the season in an offensive slump. The three homers gave Minnesota 36 on the season, second-most in the American League behind the Rays.

After the first pitch was delayed two hours by rain, Royals starter Jordan Lyles (0-5) gave up seven runs in four innings.

Minnesota right-hander Pablo López (2-2) struggled for the second straight outing but still pitched into the seventh for the third time in six starts this year. He allowed six earned runs while striking out seven.

In previous outing last Saturday, López gave up five earned runs over four innings in a loss to Washington. It was his first start after the Twins signed him to a $73.5 million, four-year contract.

Polanco's second homer of the year, a three-run shot to right field, put the Twins on top 7-2 in the fourth. He started the season on the injured list with knee soreness, but is hitting .367 (11 for 30) with nine RBIs since making his 2023 debut last Friday.

Kepler led off the bottom of the first with his third homer of the season. Miranda hit his third in three games leading off the fifth.

Miranda's drive gave the Twins an 8-2 lead, but the Royals wouldn't go down quietly. In the sixth, Perez hit a long homer into the bullpen. Olivares then hit a two-out triple and scored on a single by Pratto.

Kansas City added two more runs in the seventh, keyed by Perez's RBI single.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth. He objected to a called third strike by umpire Jerry Layne with Michael Massey at the plate as the potential go-ahead run.

Michael A. Taylor brought home a run in the fourth for Minnesota with one of the shortest extra-base hits in baseball history. With Joey Gallo on third base and one out, Taylor laid down a perfect squeeze bunt in front of home plate. Perez, the catcher, fielded the bunt, but second baseman Massey was late covering first, forcing Perez to hold the ball.

Taylor then alertly sprinted to second base when he saw it had been left uncovered. The play was scored an RBI double for Taylor on a ball that didn't reach the infield grass.

Twins: RHP Kenta Maeda (triceps strain) will be shut down until his symptoms subside, according to trainer Nick Paparesta. Maeda is expected to be replaced in the roation by RHP Bailey Ober, who was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul and will be activated to face the Royals on Saturday. … RHP Tyler Mahle was diagnosed with a posterior impingement of his right elbow and also won't resume throwing until the soreness is gone. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said Mahle's status is day-to-day, while no timetable was given for Maeda's return.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (2-2, 3.96 ERA) will face Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. Keller took the loss against the Twins on April 2 in Kansas City but is 2-0 in three road starts this season.

Chiefs trade up to pick SMU WR Rashee Rice in 2nd round

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts traded down twice Friday night before taking Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents in the second round of the NFL draft at No. 44 overall.

Brents had settled in to watch the draft at a sports bar in Westfield, a five-minute drive from the site of Colts training camp and a half hour away from his high school, when his cell phone buzzed with a 317 area code. Word from the Colts set off a wild celebration among Brents' family and friends.

"I was praying nobody was prank calling me," Brents said. "It's crazy. You can't write no better story than this. Being a Colts fan my whole life, growing up watching Peyton Manning, Bob Sanders, being able to put on that same horseshoe, it's nothing but a blessing."

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound Indianapolis native earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2022 on the strength of four interceptions and 45 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Brents is expected to replenish the position after general manager Chris Ballard traded top corner Stephon Gilmore to Dallas in March.

Brents began his college career at Iowa before transferring in 2021 to Kansas State. He was a three-time all-conference performer at Warren Central High School in Indy and measured a 82 ⅝-inch wingspan.

"I know they wanted a great corner, and they got one in me," Brents said. "I am who I say I am. I just want to win and bring us back that Super Bowl."

The selection required a wait. Ballard twice traded down, first picking up a fifth-round selection (No. 141 overall) from Las Vegas in exchange for dropping from No. 35 overall to No. 38. Ballard then acquired an extra fourth-rounder, No. 110 overall, from Atlanta for moving from No. 38 to No. 44.

On the opening day of the draft, the Colts grabbed Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick. The move was expected after so many changes at QB for the Colts, who finished 4-12-1 mark last season with three different starters.

The 20-year-old Richardson was all smiles during his introductory news conference earlier Friday.

"It's been everything I could dream of and a little bit more," Richardson said. "I'm excited to finally know where home is now. I'm a Colt. I've been emotions everywhere. I've been crying, smiling, dancing, jumping around, all over the place."

Richardson expects to adapt well to the offensive system of first-year Indy coach Shane Steichen, who worked with Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts the past two seasons as the Eagles' offensive coordinator.

NFL Draft: Who are the best players left on Day 2?

Following a 45-38 victory over the Southwest Kansas Storm on Saturday, it was announced that two members of the Liberty had been named CIF players of the week.

In his debut for Salina, newly acquired QB Ed Crouch put on a show,&nbsp;racking up 179 all-purpose yards under center, tossing five touchdowns through the air, and adding one on the ground while surrendering just two interceptions on the day.

For his efforts under center, Crouch was named CIF Offensive Player of the Week, while Liberty Kicker James Kazalski collected CIF Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Kazalski was perfect on the day, contributing eight points in the seven-point victory, knocking down all five extra points and a critical field goal to help deliver Salina the win.

The Liberty will be back in action on Saturday with a non-league home game against the Queen City Insane Asylum.

Salina secures two player of the week honors after defeating Storm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs used the final selection of the first round of the hometown NFL draft to pick a hometown player, selecting Kansas State pass rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah with the 31st overall pick Thursday night.

Anudike-Uzomah was born in Kansas City and became a high school star in the suburb of Lee's Summit, Mo., before heading down Interstate 70 to play for the Wildcats. He became a starter in the Big 12 by his sophomore season and declared for the draft after a junior season in which he was voted the league's defensive player of the year.

Anudike-Uzomah fills a big need for the Chiefs, who had to release Frank Clark to create some salary cap space.

The Chiefs also used a first-round pick last year on defensive end George Karlaftis, and now they have two young players to anchor their pass rush for years to come. Karlaftis had six sacks while helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl as a rookie.

Chiefs pick hometown star Felix Anudike-Uzomah of K-State

There are more players to watch in the Big 12 with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF all joining the conference this summer. There will be transfer quarterbacks potentially taking over two of the newcomers, with Kedon Slovis now at BYU and Emory Jones at Cincinnati. Houston has added David Ugwoegbu, who played 51 games as a linebacker in the Big 12 for Oklahoma the past four seasons. The Cougars are switching him to the defensive line as an edge rusher.

A look at football players in the Big 12 Conference this spring who are poised to have standout seasons this fall, when the league will have 14 teams with the additions of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF:

BAYLOR: WR Ketron Jackson Jr. is a former four-star recruit out of Texas who transferred from Arkansas after being a starter for the Razorbacks last season as a sophomore. If several highlight moments during spring drills are any indication, he could become a big part of the Baylor offense.

BYU: QB Kedon Slovis is a graduate transfer from Pittsburgh who previously played three seasons at Southern California. With their projected backup a junior college transfer with no major college experience, the Cougars need Slovis to be effective. He threw for 3,502 yards and completed 72% of his passes in 2019, his first season at USC, but has since had injury issues.

CINCINNATI: QB Emory Jones is with his third team in as many years. The dual-threat player who spent three seasons at Florida before playing for Arizona State last year could be in position to start for the Bearcats with last year's starter Ben Bryant in the transfer portal.

HOUSTON: David Ugwoegbu played 51 games as a linebacker in the Big 12 for Oklahoma the past four seasons. The Cougars are switching him to the defensive line as an edge rusher. He had 212 tackles during his career with the Sooners, 109 of those last year.

IOWA STATE: WR Jayden Higgins is an Eastern Kentucky transfer who helps cushion the blow of Xavier Hutchinson's departure. Higgins broke out in his second season for the Colonels with 58 catches for 757 yards and a team-high 10 touchdowns. At 6-4 and 200 pounds, Higgins should fit nicely into the split end role and be a complement to top returning receiver Jaylin Noel.

KANSAS: When QB Jalon Daniels was healthy, the Jayhawks flew to a surprising spot in the Top 25 last season. But a shoulder injury sidelined him against TCU, leading to a long slide over the second half of the season. Daniels' snaps were managed during the spring, but he played well in their showcase to wrap up practices. He's the clear-cut starter ahead of Jason Bean, who might play a bit of running back and wide receiver.

KANSAS STATE: The Wildcats lost do-everything All-American Deuce Vaughn to the NFL Draft, but they found a capable replacement in RB Treshaun Ward, who ran for 1,143 yards and 11 TDs over the past two seasons at Florida State. DJ Giddens backed up Vaughn a year ago and looks to be the No. 2 again this season.

OKLAHOMA: DL Trace Ford transferred in from rival Oklahoma State, where he started six games as a freshman in 2019 and nine games in 2020. He missed the 2021 season due to injury, then played nine games last year before missing the last four due to injury. When healthy, he at times has been a dominant performer.

OKLAHOMA STATE: QB Alan Bowman could be a starter in the Big 12 again after Spencer Sanders transferred to Ole Miss. Bowman is a transfer from Michigan who started his career at Texas Tech, where he passed for 5,260 yards and 33 touchdowns in 19 games from 2018-20. Coach Mike Gundy's son, Gunnar, is among several other QBs in the mix, none with as much experience as Bowman.

TCU: QB Chandler Morris went into last season as the starter, but got hurt in the season opener. Max Duggan regained his role as the No. 1 quarterback, and went on to be a Heisman Trophy finalist while helping lead the Horned Frogs to the national title game. Coach Sonny Dykes said Morris took advantage by sitting back, watching and learning, and that Morris is more mature and more focused than he was a year ago.

TEXAS: It looks like QB Quinn Ewers will remain the Longhorns starter, and he has a big new target. Georgia transfer WR Adonai Mitchell had the highlight of the spring game with a one-handed touchdown catch. Pair him with WR Xavier Worthy and TE Ja'Tavion Sanders and Ewers has plenty of options.

TEXAS TECH: WR Loic Fouonji could be primed for a standout senior season if he can stay healthy. The speedy 6-foot-4 Fouonji had 34 catches for 451 yards and three TDs while dealing with a shoulder injury last season. He also missed a chunk of spring practice with a hamstring injury, but had three catches for 103 yards in the spring game.

UCF: Former Ole Miss QB John Rhys Plumlee returns for a second season as the Knights' starter after completing 63% of his passes for 2,586 yards, 14 TDs and eight interceptions last season. He was also UCF's leading rusher with 862 yards and 11 TDs.

WEST VIRGINIA: CJ Donaldson arrived a year ago as a 240-pound tight end and converted to running back during fall camp. The freshman made an immediate impact by blocking a punt and rushing for 125 yards on just seven carries in the season-opening loss at Pittsburgh. The Carolina Panthers selected the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Thursday night, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players.

The Panthers chose the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner over Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, Florida's Anthony Richardson and Kentucky's Will Levis. New coach Frank Reich said earlier in the week that the organization reached a consensus Monday after several weeks of deliberation.

Stroud didn't have to wait long. He went No. 2 to the Houston Texans.

A dual-threat playmaker with a strong arm and an elite combination of instincts and intelligence, Young also possesses the intangibles and characteristics coaches desire, including leadership ability and a strong work ethic.

But the biggest question about Young is his size. He measured at 5-foot-10 1/8 and weighed 204 pounds at the combine. Though he dominated the SEC, some scouts and coaches fear Young may not be able to physically withstand all the hits in the NFL.

The Panthers couldn't pass up his superior skills.

Kyler Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, is the only other QB since 2003 to be selected in the first round after weighing in at 207 pounds or less at the combine.

"I'm confident in my abilities," Young said Wednesday. "I don't know how to play the game another way. I've been this size relative to the people around me my entire life. I focus on what I control, and I can't grow. That doesn't fall into that category. I can't get any taller. I focus on myself. I'm confident in myself with what I've been able to do and I'm excited for the work it's going to take."

The Panthers have sought an answer at quarterback since moving on from Cam Newton, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2011 and the NFL MVP in 2015 when he led the Panthers to a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl appearance.

Young had a spectacular career at Alabama and the Panthers are hoping he can deliver the franchise's first Lombardi Trophy. He played in a pro-style offense under offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, the former Texans head coach who has returned to the NFL to run New England's offense.

Young threw for 4,872 yards with 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his first season starting as a sophomore in 2021. Last season, he had 3,328 yards passing with 32 TDs and five picks while playing with a new supporting cast.

Stroud's stock had seemingly dropped after reports that he scored poorly in the S2 Cognition test surfaced recently. He told the AP earlier in the day he didn't know where he would end up going, even saying it could be top 20.

Instead, Stroud, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy the past two seasons, goes to Houston to help the rebuilding Texans move past Deshaun Watson.

Two months after the hometown Kansas City Chiefs celebrated another Super Bowl title with a downtown parade, a sea of red-clad fans lined up in the streets where the century-old Union Station served as the backdrop for the draft.

Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce walked on stage with the Vince Lombardi Trophy and riled up the crowd.

Mahomes implored them to scream louder — they did. Kelce asked if they wanted to trade up for the No. 1 pick.

But the Chiefs don't need a QB. Carolina did.

PHOENIX (AP) — Kansas City's Freddy Fermin knocked the cover off the ball during Wednesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He really did.

The Royals catcher was facing Zac Gallen in the second inning when he swung early on an offspeed pitch. Fermin's bat just knicked the baseball, sending it bouncing softly into foul ground close to the on-deck circle.

As it came to a stop, it was clear that the cover had been partially torn from the ball.

D-backs broadcaster Bob Brenly said during the game that he's seen similar things happen a few times in his career. Brenly was a big league catcher in the 1980s and was also the D-backs manager from 2001-04.

"You may ask yourself, how does that happen?" Brenly said. "This is what they call a cupped bat. They take some of the weight out of the end of the bat and when the hitter is out in front so far, it catches the back part of the cup and rips the cover off the baseball."

The Diamondbacks beat the Royals 2-0 on Wednesday. Fermin wasn't the only Royals hitter fooled by one of Gallen's pitches. The Arizona right-hander struck out 12, running his scoreless streak to 28 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bryce Young had been catching grief from Alabama teammate Will Anderson Jr. all morning after dragging a blanket out of his hotel room, wrapping up in it and trying to fight off a brisk wind as the sun rose over Union Station.

"You can call me soft. Call me whatever you like," Young said Wednesday. "I'm cold."

It doesn't figure to be a whole lot warmer Thursday night, when the century-old train depot near downtown Kansas City serves as the backdrop for the NFL draft. Before it sits the largest stage complex the league has ever built for its second-biggest event behind the Super Bowl, serving as the anchor for a three-day spectacle expected to draw more than 100,000 people.

Young won't have to sit in the elements long, though. The Crimson Tide quarterback, who won the Heisman Trophy two years ago, is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick when the Carolina Panthers are the first team on the clock.

"It's crazy to be here right now," Young told The Associated Press, about 24 hours before the draft was set to begin. "My earliest memory of the draft is just probably having it on TV at a young age, you know? Just being a sports household. Always on. Always watching it, always paying attention to it. And now to be able to track these players and say, 'Oh, I remember that draft, and now he's here and doing this' — you know, you start to see the progression.

"And more recently," Young said, "when I've been able to watch the draft, it's been surreal knowing people that have gone that I worked out with, or I shared a day with. I mean, now actually taking part in it, it's a blessing."

Anderson, one of the best pass rushers available, also expects to be among the first few picks Thursday night.

"I mean, at the end of the day, I think the biggest thing is as long as you get drafted. That's how I kind of think of it," he said. "It doesn't matter where you land. Obviously just matters that you get drafted."

The actual draft is only part of the three-day football festival.

Up the hill from Union Station, where the Kansas City Chiefs celebrated their third Super Bowl triumph in February, sits the National World War I Museum and Memorial. The expansive south grass area has transformed into the NFL Draft Experience, where fans can see every edition of the Super Bowl ring, the Lombardi Trophy and catch photos and autographs.

At the conclusion of the first round Thursday night, the Grammy-nominated rock band Fall Out Boy will take the stage for a concert. Motley Crue and Thundercat are scheduled to perform on subsequent nights.

On Friday night, just across the state line in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is hosting his own music festival at the Azura Amphitheater. Machine Gun Kelly, Loud Luxury, Rick Ross and Kansas City hip-hop icon Tech N9ne will perform, and food will be provided by some of the best barbecue joints in town.

Motley Crue and Thundercat are scheduled to perform on subsequent nights.On Friday night, just across the state line in Bonner Springs, Kansas, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is hosting his own music festival at the Azura Amphitheater. Machine Gun Kelly, Loud Luxury, Rick Ross and Kansas City hip-hop icon Tech N9ne will perform, and food will be provided by some of the best barbecue joints in town.Speaking of 'cue, former Chiefs offensive tackle-turned-grillmaster Mitchell Schwartz will be hosting the KC Smoke Show on the north lawn of the museum on Saturday. Along with the official competition, some of the best pitmasters from Kansas City and around the country will serve up samples for fans attending the final day of the draft."It's absolutely amazing from where the draft has gone to now traveling all over the country and allowing cities to put on a great performance," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. "I think it's cool because not every city can have a Super Bowl, just because of how big that is, but they can have a part of his NFL experience with different things."Asked whether he would have gone as a kid, Veach replied: "Absolutely. I would have been there all three days."Alas, Veach won't be there this year. He'll be ensconced alongside Andy Reid at the Chiefs' facility near Arrowhead Stadium, about a 15-minute drive east of the downtown area, where they are scheduled to pick 31st overall Thursday night."I'm excited for the city," Reid said. "Obviously all these people that are coming in for this are excited; they're excited to be in Kansas City. You better get the barbecue fired up and ready to go because we'll have a lot of folks here."Young and Anderson had yet to partake in Kansas City's famous barbecue Wednesday, though both promised it was still on their agenda before the draft. Also on the agenda was an afternoon trip to Central Middle and High School, where they were to join other draft prospects in a clinic and working on a variety of community service projects."It's crazy, for sure, just how much our lives are going to change, you know?" said Young, who glanced over to see — somewhat incredulously — that Anderson was now the one wrapped up in a blanket to fight off the morning chill."In 48 hours, we'll all be going our separate ways," Young said. "Hopefully, you know, mentally you've prepared yourself for the process, and you've built toward it, and you're ready. I'm excited for it to be here, for sure."
