MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Led by Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;and First Team All-Big 12 performers&nbsp;Phillip Brooks&nbsp;and&nbsp;Wyatt Hubert, a total of 10 Kansas State football players picked up postseason honors as the Big 12 announced the coaches’ All-Big 12 selections on Thursday.</a>

Vaughn is the second Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award – joining Tyler Lockett (2011) – and the Round Rock, Texas native was also named a Second Team All-Big 12 running back, the first Wildcat true freshman in the Big 12 era to earn first- or second-team honors on offense from the league’s coaches.

Brooks was the First Team All-Big 12 kick and punt returner, the 14th&nbsp;time in the 25-year existence of the Big 12 – and the seventh time in the last eight years – that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner. Hubert was one of three players in the Big 12 to be a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Iowa State running back Breece Hall and Texas offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi.

Joining Vaughn on the second team were tight end&nbsp;Briley Moore&nbsp;and offensive lineman&nbsp;Noah Johnson. Place kicker&nbsp;Blake Lynch, defensive back&nbsp;Jahron McPherson, linebacker&nbsp;Elijah Sullivan&nbsp;and defensive tackle&nbsp;Drew Wiley&nbsp;each picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades.

In addition to their placing on various teams, Hubert also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Player and Lineman of the Year awards, Johnson for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award and Moore for the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award. Senior&nbsp;Brock Monty&nbsp;earned votes for the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year award.

Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards so far in 2020, joining Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne, and is the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rushing (64.2 yards per game) and 10th&nbsp;in scoring (5.4 points per game) and is the top freshman in both categories. He also ranks fifth in the nation among freshmen, third in the Big 12 overall and tops among freshmen in the league in all-purpose yards per game (112.1).

In the final regular season game against Texas, Vaughn broke the K-State freshman records for rushing yards (642), all-purpose yards (1,221), yards from scrimmage (1,076) and total touchdowns (9), needing only 10 games to do so.

Brooks totaled 411 return yards this season, including 261 punt-return yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 23.7-yard average on punt returns is tops in school history and would lead the nation if he had the required minimum amount of returns.

A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brooks set the school record with 189 punt-return yards against Kansas and took two punts back for touchdowns, the most by a Big 12 player in a conference game in league history. Additionally, his 47.25-yard average against KU was the highest by any player in the nation with at least four attempts since at least 1996.

Hubert, a product of Topeka, Kansas, earned his second-straight First Team All-Big 12 honor as his 8.5 sacks tied for the Big 12 lead and ranked 25th&nbsp;nationally during the regular season. He also tied for third with 13.0 tackles for loss. His season totals were given a boost when he tallied a career-high 2.5 sacks against Oklahoma State, the most by a Wildcat in a conference game since 2013.

The junior ranks first nationally among non-seniors with 20.0 career sacks, while he is fourth overall among active players with 0.59 career sacks.

Vaughn is the first Wildcat semifinalist and just the fourth freshman semifinalist in the eight-year history of the award that recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell. In addition, the nominee must have been born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I college.

A native of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards, the other being Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne. Vaughn is also the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards.

Also included in the Class of 2021 is Lakin, Kansas offensive lineman Hadley Panzer, who signed last February but deferred his enrollment to January 2021. Panzer will join five prospects that signed on Wednesday that are expected to enroll in time for spring practices.

This year’s early class includes eight players on defense and six on offense. The class is comprised of three defensive backs and linebackers, two apiece of offensive linemen and wide receivers, one defensive end, one defensive tackle, one running back and a quarterback.

Featured in the class are four players rated in the top 50 nationally at their respective positions by either Rivals, 247Sports or ESPN. Quarterback&nbsp;Jake Rubley&nbsp;(Highland Ranch, Colorado) was rated the 25th-best overall prospect and No. 3 pocket passer in the nation by ESPN. As a result, K-State officials also have informed the Big 12 Conference that the school will not be able to field enough players to prepare for and play in a bowl game later this month. By finishing seventh in the Big 12 regular-season standings, the Wildcats were in line to compete in a bowl game. “This has been an unbelievably challenging year for everyone, but we were very excited to have the opportunity to end the season in a bowl game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “But, with new positive cases and additional close contacts in our program, we would not have enough players to continue practices and field a team for the bowl game. I want to thank our student-athletes and coaches for their tireless effort this year and for being flexible during a time when every day presented new challenges.” “It certainly is a bittersweet ending to the season, but playing 10 regular-season games throughout all of this uncertainty was nothing short of a miracle,” Head Coach Chris Klieman added. “I want to thank our players, especially our seniors, for continuing to battle each and every day, no matter what circumstance was put before them. This season was difficult and frustrating, but I think it is also one that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Manhattan ( 1-2 )&nbsp; outlasted a second half rally by the Junction City&nbsp; and rolled on to a 58-48 boys basketball victory over the Blue Jays. The Indians led by 12 in the third quarter when a flurry of steals and ensuing layups brought Junction City ( 2-1 ) back within one point in the third quarter. But Junction City never regained the lead.&nbsp;

Blue Jay coach Nick Perez assessed the loss. "We just did things that we don't normally do. We've got guys dribbling the ball 100 times before we passed it. We took some bad shots early and they got some runouts for layups.&nbsp; Perez added has to do a better job of preparing the Blue Jays.

Manhattan sophomore Cameron Carr came off the bench to lead all MHS scorers with 18 points in the win. The Blue Jays struggled to contain him. Junction City was led in scoring by Howard Johnson with 18 points. The Blue Jays hit only two three-point shots in the game.

In the girls contest Manhattan ( 3-0 ) defeated Junction City 42-33.

Bruce Weber speaks to media ahead of Big 12 opener

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

Friday night basketball scores

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Following Kansas State's historic loss to Fort Hays State on Tuesday, many were unsure how Bruce Weber and the Wildcats would respond.&nbsp;

After falling behind 7-0 in the opening minutes, K-State would hit their stride, opening up a 14-0 run to claim an early advantage that they would ride all the way to halftime.&nbsp;

A big part of that first half lead was freshman Selton Miguel, who hadn't scored more than 10 points in a game in the first five contests, lead the team in scoring with 12 points in the opening stanza.&nbsp;

In the second period, Milwaukee would force a rally of their own, battling back from multiple K-State leads. K-State would hold a seven point advantage with 40 seconds remaining, but it wasn't over yet.

On a night where the young Wildcats relied heavily on their newcomers and freshmen, it would be a freshman mistake that nearly cost them a victory.&nbsp;

Nijel Pack, who finished the contest with an impressive stat line of 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, would go to the free throw line with less than two seconds to go. After missing the first shot, Pack would intentionally miss the second shot to try and run off the final seconds, but the shot wouldn't draw iron, allowing Milwaukee an inbound pass and a last ditch effort at pulling off the upset.&nbsp;

By Jackson SchneiderMANHATTAN, Kan. — Following Kansas State's historic loss to Fort Hays State on Tuesday, many were unsure how Bruce Weber and the Wildcats would respond.&nbsp;After falling behind 7-0 in the opening minutes, K-State would hit their stride, opening up a 14-0 run to claim an early advantage that they would ride all the way to halftime.&nbsp;A big part of that first half lead was freshman Selton Miguel, who hadn't scored more than 10 points in a game in the first five contests, lead the team in scoring with 12 points in the opening stanza.&nbsp;In the second period, Milwaukee would force a rally of their own, battling back from multiple K-State leads. K-State would hold a seven point advantage with 40 seconds remaining, but it wasn't over yet.On a night where the young Wildcats relied heavily on their newcomers and freshmen, it would be a freshman mistake that nearly cost them a victory.&nbsp;Nijel Pack, who finished the contest with an impressive stat line of 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, would go to the free throw line with less than two seconds to go. K-State holds off Milwaukee

Effective Thursday, December 10 through January 28, 2021, interscholastic activities at USD 378 Riley County will allow for attendance of up to two parents/guardians per participant(s) family.

There will be a suggested donation of $5 for High School events and $3 for Middle School events.

A list of each participant’s parents/guardians will be located at the North Gym entrance.&nbsp; Parents/Guardians must wear a mask and check in with the gate worker before entering the gyms.

KSHSAA Interpretations/clarifications on spectator rule:

No participant’s family will be allowed more than two parents/guardians to attend impacted KSHSAA activities.

No “substitutes” for a participant's parent/guardian if they are unable to attend the contest.

All spectators must be masked the entire time in the facility, even if they are socially distanced.

Parents/guardians are there to support their child while in competition; therefore we ask parents/guardians whose child’s competition has concluded to exit the facility&nbsp;

The impacted interscholastic activities include basketball, bowling, debate, forensics/speech, scholars bowl, swimming &amp; diving, and wrestling.

The Big 12 Conference determined the game will not be re-scheduled and has declared it “no contest”.

“I am very disappointed our team won’t get another chance to compete this season, but unfortunately that is out of our control,” said Head Coach Les Miles. “Our team played very hard last week on the road, and I know they were eager to get back on the field to face a very good Texas team this weekend. With our season complete, I would be remiss not to recognize our student-athletes and staff for diligently following the medical guidelines set for them this year. I am very proud of their efforts and proud to be the head coach of this football team. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk.”

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Five individuals have been selected for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2021. Awards will be presented during 2021 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The time and location of each induction ceremony will be announced at a later date at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org.

The Class of 2021 Hall of Fame inductees include:

Coach Shane Cordell’s record as a high school football and girls basketball coach at his alma mater speaks for itself. In 29 years as the high school football coach he compiled a record of 204-94 (.685) and played in the state championship game seven times, bringing home three titles (1981-1A, 1996 and 1999 – 8-Man 1A DI). He was the first Kansas coach to play for and then coach a state championship at his alma mater. His 34 years with the girls basketball program posted a record of 604-225 (.729). The Redskins captured four straight Class 1A state titles (1995-1998). Along the way they had three undefeated seasons and a 91-game winning streak. The basketball court at Little River HS is named after Cordell. As a coach and educator he has had a lasting impact on students and the community of Little River.

GARY MUSSELMAN, SILVER LAKE – ADMINISTRATOR

Gary Musselman served Kansas students and the membership of the Kansas State High School Activities Association for 30 years – eight years as an Assistant Director and 22 years as the Executive Director (the longest in Association history). During his tenure some of the initiatives implemented&nbsp; include – Student Advisory Team; Officials Recognition Program; Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; League Commissioners Summit; Officials Advisory Committee; Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition; Spirit of Sports and Heart of the Arts; Interscholastic Bowling. Musselman served on the NFHS Board of Directors and was president of the NFHS in 2016-2017. Prior to his work at the KSHSAA Musselman was a teacher and coach at Independence HS, Andover HS, Beloit HS, Halstead HS and principal (1987- 1988) at La Crosse HS.

Van Rose is one of the most iconic, yet humble coaches to impact generations of athletes in the state of Kansas. His name is synonymous with Shawnee Mission Northwest HS Cross Country and Success. Coach Rose began his 48-year coaching stint at Northwest HS when it opened in 1969 and his athletes have dominated Class 6A. The girls team won 13 state championships; in the 90s they won six of ten titles and overall placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 21 times. The boys team captured 21 6A titles, more than any school in Kansas and 12th overall in the U.S. From 1994-2007, they earned 14 state titles in a row, the 5th longest streak in the country, and placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 30 times in school history. Add to this 25 boys and 14 girls Sunflower League titles. He has received numerous cross country Coach of the Year honors.

JACQUE (STRUCKHOFF) STEDMAN – STUDENT (GRINNELL HS, 1980-1983)

In the early 1980s the Grinnell Lady Warriors captured several state titles with Jacque Struckhoff playing a key role: volleyball - 1A state champions in 1982 and 1983, placing 3rd in 1981; basketball – 1A state runner-up in 1982 and 3rd place in 1983; track &amp; field – 1A state champions in 1980, 1982, 1983 and runner-up in 1981. During her senior year she was named to the All-Tournament team at state basketball, averaging 11 points and 12 rebounds per game, and she won three gold medals on the track (800m, 1600m and 3200m relays). Jacque was a remarkable example of not only a student-athlete but also an all-around student, participating in band, pep club, Student Council, Scholars Bowl, Math &amp; Science Relays and graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She participated on KSU track and cross country teams and in 1988 ran in the 10,000m run at the Olympic Trials.

To say that Centralia HS and Coach Kim Tennal dominated Class 1A volleyball is putting it mildly. During 19 years at Centralia HS, Tennal and her Lady Panther volleyball team posted a record of 582-47 (.926), and made 17 state tournament appearances, winning nine Class 1A state titles with a state record of eight in a row (1997-2004). During this span the team posted an amazing record of 311-11 (.966). They had three undefeated seasons (1997, 1999, 2000) and posted a winning streak of 126 matches. Prior to and after her time at Centralia, she coached at three different high schools and took all to the state tournament. Her overall high school volleyball record is 788-145 (.845). Coach Kim Tennal attacked each day with such conviction and enthusiasm that as an individual, a school and a community you couldn’t help but be impacted by her positive spirit.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the Kansas State High School Activities Association offices, 601 SW Commerce Place in Topeka and is open Monday–Friday during business hours (directions at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org).&nbsp; The Hall of Fame is also available via the KSHSAA “Gallery of Champions” at&nbsp;http://www.kshsaachamps.org/.

The honorees were chosen from nominations reviewed by a selection committee.&nbsp; To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, an individual must have made an unusually outstanding contribution in interschool activities, either as a student with exceptional talent, or as an adult working with youth (such as an activity coach, director or sponsor, an administrator, an official or a contributor).&nbsp; Hall of Fame inductees may no longer be active in the field for which they are nominated (exception: contributor with over 30 years of outstanding service).

Each year schools and communities throughout Kansas submit many nominations of individuals who have made tremendous contributions in the field of interschool activities. Hall of Fame information is available on the KSHSAA website at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org. Nomination forms are available by contacting the KSHSAA.&nbsp; Any nominations to be considered for induction in 2022 must be submitted prior to November 1, 2021.

During his tenure some of the initiatives implemented&nbsp; include – Student Advisory Team; Officials Recognition Program; Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; League Commissioners Summit; Officials Advisory Committee; Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition; Spirit of Sports and Heart of the Arts; Interscholastic Bowling. Musselman served on the NFHS Board of Directors and was president of the NFHS in 2016-2017. Prior to his work at the KSHSAA Musselman was a teacher and coach at Independence HS, Andover HS, Beloit HS, Halstead HS and principal (1987- 1988) at La Crosse HS.VAN ROSE, SHAWNEE – FACULTYVan Rose is one of the most iconic, yet humble coaches to impact generations of athletes in the state of Kansas. His name is synonymous with Shawnee Mission Northwest HS Cross Country and Success. Coach Rose began his 48-year coaching stint at Northwest HS when it opened in 1969 and his athletes have dominated Class 6A. The girls team won 13 state championships; in the 90s they won six of ten titles and overall placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 21 times. The boys team captured 21 6A titles, more than any school in Kansas and 12th overall in the U.S. From 1994-2007, they earned 14 state titles in a row, the 5th longest streak in the country, and placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 30 times in school history. Add to this 25 boys and 14 girls Sunflower League titles. He has received numerous cross country Coach of the Year honors.JACQUE (STRUCKHOFF) STEDMAN – STUDENT (GRINNELL HS, 1980-1983)In the early 1980s the Grinnell Lady Warriors captured several state titles with Jacque Struckhoff playing a key role: volleyball - 1A state champions in 1982 and 1983, placing 3rd in 1981; basketball – 1A state runner-up in 1982 and 3rd place in 1983; track &amp; field – 1A state champions in 1980, 1982, 1983 and runner-up in 1981. During her senior year she was named to the All-Tournament team at state basketball, averaging 11 points and 12 rebounds per game, and she won three gold medals on the track (800m, 1600m and 3200m relays). Jacque was a remarkable example of not only a student-athlete but also an all-around student, participating in band, pep club, Student Council, Scholars Bowl, Math &amp; Science Relays and graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She participated on KSU track and cross country teams and in 1988 ran in the 10,000m run at the Olympic Trials.KIM TENNAL, URBANDALE, IA – FACULTYTo say that Centralia HS and Coach Kim Tennal dominated Class 1A volleyball is putting it mildly. During 19 years at Centralia HS, Tennal and her Lady Panther volleyball team posted a record of 582-47 (.926), and made 17 state tournament appearances, winning nine Class 1A state titles with a state record of eight in a row (1997-2004). During this span the team posted an amazing record of 311-11 (.966). They had three undefeated seasons (1997, 1999, 2000) and posted a winning streak of 126 matches. Prior to and after her time at Centralia, she coached at three different high schools and took all to the state tournament. Her overall high school volleyball record is 788-145 (.845). &nbsp; The Riley County Health Department (RCHD) will adopt the new 10-day quarantine guidelines proposed by CDC and KDHE effective Thursday, December 10, 2020. The new guidelines state quarantine can end after day 10 if the patient has no symptoms of COVID-19. Riley County will not adopt the alternate 7-day quarantine option at this time. Patients currently in quarantine may end their quarantine period after day 10 if they do not develop symptoms. Contact tracing staff will reach out to patients directly to share information about the new guidelines. “To reduce the personal burden on patients and gain more compliance with quarantine, we will adopt the new 10-day alternative,” said Local Health Officer Julie Gibbs. “Symptoms may appear after day 10, but the likelihood decreases significantly. RCHD continues to recommend a quarantine period of 14 days for anyone exposed to COVID-19 if they have the ability to do so.” According to CDC, with the 10-day strategy, residual post-quarantine transmission risk is estimated to be about 1% with an upper limit of about 10%.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MLB Network was first to report that the sides had reached an agreement Tuesday. The 34-year-old Santana was an All-Star two years ago in Cleveland, when he hit a career-best .281 with 34 homers and 93 RBIs. But he slid to .199 with eight homers and 30 RBIs while playing 60 games during the shortened 2020 season, resulting in the Indians declining his $17.5 million option for the upcoming season.

Royals sign Carlos Santana 

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;&nbsp;Kaye B. Pearce,&nbsp;former Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, who served 20 years with the association, passed away Dec. 6 at his home in Bella Vista, AR, at the age of 85.

For 39 years Kaye Pearce devoted his life to the kids of Kansas as a teacher, coach, athletic director and member of the KSHSAA staff. &nbsp;His years as a coach and as a member of the KSHSAA staff earned him an enviable reputation as an excellent leader who truly cared about his profession, those he was privileged to work with and the students in the state of Kansas. Pearce joined the staff of the Kansas State High School Activities Association in 1976 as an Administrative Assistant. In 1989 he was named the Associate Director and from 1993-1996 he served as the Executive Director. While a member of the KSHSAA staff Pearce was the administrator for numerous activities, perhaps most notably football, basketball and track and field. &nbsp; Professional positions included: NFHS Football Rules Committee for 20 years, serving as the chair the last four years; two terms on the NFHS Track &amp; Field Rules Committee; Board of Directors for the Sunflower State Games; and Kansas Wesleyan University (Salina, KS) Board of Trustees.

For many years following&nbsp; his retirement in 1996, he served as the KSHSAA State Track and Field Meet referee.

A native of Salina, Pearce began his career at his alma mater, spending nine year as a teacher and coach. When Salina added another high school he remained at Central High School for ten years as the athletic director, match teacher, football and track coach. During his 19 seasons as a football coach for the Mustangs from 1957-1975, the last 16 he served as the program's head coach. He had a record of 91-48-4 (.654).&nbsp; From 1960-1968, before the start of high school playoffs in Kansas, his teams never won less than six games when the maximum number played was nine.

Pearce is a member of three Halls of Fame:
