Joseph Andrew Dreiling, 85, died Monday, August 8, 2022, at Halsey Hall 
at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge, Kansas. He was born March 10,
 1937, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Joseph P. &amp; Anna (Burgardt)
 Dreiling. 
 Joseph grew up as a young child in Holcomb, Kansas. In the early 
1940’s, he moved with his family to Garden City where he attended Garden
 City Schools. Joseph served in the United States Army from 1959 to 
1961. After the service, he returned to Garden City. On November 29, 
1962, he married Janis Elaine Breit in Garden City. In 1970, they moved
 to Deerfield, Kansas where they have lived since. Joseph worked in 
various jobs throughout his life including the Garden City Telegram, the
 Sugar Beet Factory, Kempers, served as manager at Western Alfalfa, 
worked for various farmers, and for the Garden City Great Western 
Railroad. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #2795 in Garden 
City, and enjoyed spending his time hunting, shooting and reloading 
ammo, and boxing which he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren. 
 Survivors include five children Joey Dreiling of Great Bend, 
Kansas, Becky &amp; husband Kim Norton of Ankeny, Iowa, Chris &amp; wife
 Susan Dreiling of Deerfield, Kansas, Terry &amp; wife Birgit Dreiling 
of Milford, Kansas, and Cathy Dreiling of Deerfield, Kansas; a brother 
Johnny Dreiling of Garden City, Kansas; four sisters Rosie &amp; husband
 Curtis Brown of Decorah, Iowa, Dorothy Dreiling of Lamar, Colorado, Sr.
 Renee Dreiling of Great Bend, Kansas, &amp; Barbara Jean Gamble of 
Lamar, Colorado; ten grandchildren Hailey Dreiling, Andrew Norton, 
Alyssa Cole, Taryn Cole, Courtney Arnold, Cameron Cole, Megan Simmoneau,
 Shawn Dreiling, Ethan Dreiling, &amp; Paula McEachern; and nine 
great-grandchildren Jordan Cole, Jazmin Richardson, Maxwell Richardson,

 Joseph is preceded in death by his wife Janis who died on February 
6, 2018. He is also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter 
Sheri Cole. 
 Funeral Mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2022, 
at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein
 as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in garden 
City with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National
 Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guards. Friends may 
call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in 
Garden City.

Kenneth Leroy Hanson Sr., age 83, of Randolph, passed away Saturday August 6, 2022, at the Salina Regional Health Center.

He was born on March 25, 1939, in Manhattan, the son of Kenneth and Leona (Jensen) Hanson.&nbsp; He graduated from old Randolph High School in 1957.

On June 1, 1958, in Salem, Missouri, he married Bonnie Jean Burkman.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Kenneth graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a teaching degree and began his career at Lewis, Kansas, for two years, Randolph for two years and then Logan, Kansas for 27 years.&nbsp; During this time, he earned his master’s degree from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; In 1997, he returned to Blue Valley to become the Middle and High School principal, retiring in 2004.&nbsp; Following his retirement, he continued to substitute teach and drive a school bus until he turned 80.

He was a member of the Alert Covenant Church and enjoyed riding horses, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp; During his many years of teaching and coaching, he made a positive impact on many of his students and athletes.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Kenneth Hanson Jr. and wife Debbie of Salina, Christine Marshall and husband Cullen of Solomon, John Hanson and wife Lee Ann of Baldwin City and Julie Weidenhaft and husband Brandon of Hays; three brothers, Melvin Hanson of Hutchinson, Gene Hanson of El Dorado and Steve Hanson of Manhattan; two sisters, Shirley O’Quinn of Bartow, Florida and Wanda Murphy of Milwaukie, Oregon; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons, Stephen and Karl Hanson.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the Alert Covenant Church with Pastor Dwight Diller officiating.&nbsp; The family encourages all in attendance to wear clothing from their favorite sports team.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery.

After a decade in Texas, the couple moved to Nebraska and Colorado before relocating to Abilene to manage ALCO’s home store in 2000. Scott was active in the Abilene community through his long-time employment with ALCO as well as his participation in Kiwanis and with the Abilene-Omitama Sister City program. Scott is survived by his wife Claire Anderson and their children, Elizabeth Anderson and Norman D. Leslie W. Dill, age 71, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2022, at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan, KS. He was born January 19, 1951, in Elmore City, Oklahoma, the son of Robert and Mildred (Ferrell). He attended school in Duncan, OK where he lived for most of his childhood. Leslie served in the United States Army for 23 years. He retired at the rank of Master Sergeant after serving in both the Vietnam and Desert Storm wars. He received numerous awards and commendations for his honorable and dedicated service. Following his retirement he worked as a truck driver for Schneider Trucking. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, watching sports on TV and doing Sudoku on Facetime with his grandchildren. He was quite a story teller and was always cracking jokes and getting chuckles from funny posts and videos. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. Leslie was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles. Survivors include his wife, Son Nan Dill, his four children: Regina Harshaw and her husband, Ryan and daughters, Brianna and Brittany; Terry Dill; Nancy Pyle and her husband, Tristan and four children, Talon, Gavin, Owen, and Nevan; and Renata Lechien. Leslie W. Dill

Barbara Jean Hager Burwell, age 89, of Manhattan, passed away on August 6, 2022, at the Ascension Living Via Christi Village in Manhattan. She was born Barbara Jean Hermreck on November 3, 1932, the daughter of Beulah (Eyman) Hermreck Roeckers and Fred W. Hermreck in Garnett, Kansas. Barbara married Gerald Ray Hager on June 5, 1949, in Fort Scott, Kansas. They moved to Manhattan in 1958, and Barbara lived in the same home for the rest of her years. She and Ray shared 21 loving years together and were blessed with four children. Ray passed away July 26, 1971 in Manhattan. Barbara married Glen Alton Burwell on December 28, 1980. She and Glen shared 40 loving years together. They owned and operated Burwell Mobile Home Park in Ogden. Barbara was the bookkeeper and Vice President of the park. Glen passed way on March 11, 2020. Barbara always considered herself to have had two loving marriages to two very special men. Barbara attended school in Anderson County at Sugar Valley, Scipio, Longfellow, and Garnett High School. She began working at Spradlin’s Drug Store in Garnett when she was 12 years old. While in high school she was very active in band and had the amazing ability to sit down to a piano or organ and play songs by ear. Music was always very important part of her life and brought her much joy. Barbara loved her family and always went to extra lengths to make each feel special. She enjoyed baking and was always trying new dishes. She loved to provide cookies and meals to her family and friends, especially at Christmas. After moving to Manhattan, Barbara worked for Keller’s Department Store, Wonder Bread, Manhattan Laundry, and Larry’s Deluxe Cleaners. Barbara worked in the cleaning business for 32 years. After retiring she thoroughly enjoyed garage “sailing” on the weekends, finding her many treasures. They were many unexpected surprises under the Christmas tree, which brought joy, happiness and laughter to all. Barbara, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend is survived by two sons, Ronald Hager (LaNell) of Linn Creek, Missouri, and Ricky Hager of Independence, Kansas, two daughters, Linda Pittenger (Tom) of Manhattan, Kansas, and Terri Yeates of Glendale, Arizona; two stepsons, Ritch Burwell (Jan) of Riley, Kansas, and Randy Burwell (Pam) of Leawood, Kansas; also her 11 grandchildren: Rachel Goodman, Michael Hager, Travis Pittenger, Eric Pittenger, Amber Bell, Crystal Pedigo, Brant Hager, Andrea Holley, Shelly Ashburn, Brian Burwell, and Stephanie Burwell; and 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; her sister, Roberta Chigg Boyer, of Lawrence, Kansas, and sister-in-law Almeda Hermreck of Vero Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Hubert Roeckers, her brothers, Fred W. Hermreck (Mickey Finch) and Larry Hermreck , and her brother-in-law, Edd Boyer. Barbara Jean Hager Burwell

Janet Louise “Nana” (Herrbach) Pizarek, 93, of rural Wamego, Kansas, formerly of rural LaPorte, Indiana, went to Heaven on the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at home with the comfort of her family.

Janet was born in Michigan City, Indiana joining 3 older brothers and 1 older sister. She attended One-Room Eddyville Schoolhouse having a Miss Sullivan as the teacher, then Coolspring Township Grade School when it was built, graduating from Elston Senior High School in 1947. Throughout her childhood and in school, she was referred to as “Jeanette”, but when she requested her birth certificate prior to her Marriage, she discovered that her name had been misspelled on her birth certificate, so her legal name was actually “Janet.” From then on she took the name Janet, with only a few schoolmates referring to her as “Jeanette.” Even though she was raised in St John’s United Church of Christ, she was always drawn to Catholic religious beliefs, mostly through a very close relationship with a special Aunt Mary and Uncle Frank, whom she visited and stayed with often during vacations in Chicago, where they lived. They were Catholic and took her to Mass with them, so at 18, she “took instructions” and joined the Catholic Church, living her life as a devoted Catholic convert. She was a strong-willed woman devoted to her beliefs, who was more interested in being outside doing yard and farm work, enjoying nature, rather than reading or doing housework.

Being born of immigrants from France and Germany, Janet was raised in a strict household where her parents sometimes talked in their native tongues of French and German, yet Janet only spoke English. Unfortunately, she was never able to know any grandparents, since they had all died in Europe prior to her birth. It’s interesting to note that her parents met when they were in the wedding party for her Dad’s brother marrying her Mom’s sister, and Janet’s husband’s parents met when they were in the wedding party at the marriage of their siblings, too.

As a young girl Janet was a tom-boy, enjoying actively helping her Dad on the family farm in the fields, gardens, and with livestock, since she was decades younger than her siblings, who were 22, 20, 12, and 9. Being born in the year of the “Great Depression”, she grew up in simpler times, spending much time in her childhood at the “Log Cabin Restaurant” that her family built and managed to earn money during a time when jobs were scarce. She talked fondly about the activities there and in the adjoining dance hall. Since Highway 20 had recently gone thru their property, her older adult brothers built the “Nu-20 Garage” where she enjoyed hanging out, as well. She laughed often about the stories she recalled about the “cops” who were there often getting work done on their vehicles, and how they would swoop her up onto their motorcycles whisking her away on a fun ride. Yes, those were very different times. She loved working with and riding horses, even after she had disobeyed by riding a work horse when she was 11 and getting drug through a barbed wire fence, almost losing her arm, requiring 200+ stitches. She got loose and dragged her mangled self to the “Nu-20” where an officer immediately threw her in a squad car, rushing her to the hospital! Her arm was only saved, because a new energetic Doctor Gardner was on the case. She had a very close relationship with her Dad, being devastated by his unexpected death when she was only 16. After hauling a load of manure, he had reclined in a chair, asking her to do the chores because he couldn’t, and while she was in the barn he had a heart attack.

When Jacob Pizarek discharged from the Army in 1946, he drove a school bus on which there was a Senior girl with whom he had an interest. Janet was someone whom he had known since her birth, since their fathers were really good friends. One day when he was about 10 and she was about 4, his Dad said, “Go over there and sit on that log next to her, as you might marry her someday.” On April 24, 1948 Janet married Jacob Clement Pizarek at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Michigan City, Indiana. Janet had recently converted and received her other Sacraments there - Penance, 1st Holy Communion, and Confirmation. The couple’s 2 children attended 12 years of Catholic education there. In later years they joined Queen of All Saints Catholic Parish in Michigan City.

Janet was a member of Coolspring Township Farm Bureau, both St. Mary’s and QAS Rosary Sodality, and had served as a Leader for several years of the Coolspring Champs 4-H Club. She enjoyed the LaPorte County Fair, watching daughter, Cherie, showing Beef, Sheep, Dog, Chickens, and Rabbits, plus she always offered helpful ideas of creativity for Cherie to develop in her other projects such as Foods, Arts/Crafts, Photography, Conservation posters, and Flowers. She loved gardening and growing beautiful flowers, especially many varieties of daylilies and iris. “Nana” enjoyed playing pinochle and solitaire. She loved all kinds of animals, especially always having at least one dog until later years, with Dobermans as her favorite or Rottweilers, and she even had a dog that was part Wolf, thus she collected wolf items, as people gave them to her as gifts. When her oldest grandson, Cory, was little, she got a unique pet for him – “Candy Goat”. After Cherie was out of 4-H and moved away, “Nana” and “Papa” continued raising her Hereford heifer, plus a few other cows, and fattened calves. Cats were always outdoor pets, until the last 15-20 years when she switched her allegiance from dogs to cats, captured some wild feral cats in humane living traps, and invited them to live in the house with her. The only remaining one, “Tipper” laid on her bed keeping vigil with “Nana” as she took her last breaths here on Earth.

After high school graduation, Janet worked as counter help and secretarial duties at a Goodyear Tire Store. During their early married life, Jacob with Janet and their young son “Tommy”, travelled the country taking jobs mostly on Dairy Farms in New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and then back in Indiana. When “Papa” was asked recently why he married “Nana” he replied, “I never found another woman who could outwork her – right along side of me – she could work like any man!” Janet was always willing to help get the job done. She was never afraid to throw hay bales, plus she worked for decades picking apples; trimming, tying, and picking grapes; and waiting on customers in her sister’s fruit and vegetable farm market.

Janet, along with Jacob, had a very special relationship with their grandchildren. Cory had spent much of his early childhood at their house while Cherie was teaching and taking additional college classes, so he loved rides on the tractor, lawn mower, and helping with all sorts of yard chores. Even though most of their grandchildren grew up in Kansas, she looked forward to their visits and they loved learning many life and farm skills from “Nana” and “Papa”. Having Gemma living only 4 miles away, gave her much satisfaction being able to interact with her much more often. Seeing and spending time with her great-grandsons recently, always put a twinkle in her eyes.

Janet led a long life, gardening and puttering around on her John Deere lawn tractor until less than 2 years ago. She loved to mow grass. Due to declining health, she and Jacob moved to Wamego, Kansas to be cared for by their son-in-law and daughter in November 2020. “Nana” was happy to reconnect with grandson Cory and be able to see her Kansas raised grandchildren more frequently. Janet Louise “Nana” (Herrbach) Pizarek, 93, of rural Wamego, Kansas, formerly of rural LaPorte, Indiana, went to Heaven on the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at home with the comfort of her family.Janet was born in Michigan City, Indiana joining 3 older brothers and 1 older sister. She attended One-Room Eddyville Schoolhouse having a Miss Sullivan as the teacher, then Coolspring Township Grade School when it was built, graduating from Elston Senior High School in 1947. Throughout her childhood and in school, she was referred to as “Jeanette”, but when she requested her birth certificate prior to her Marriage, she discovered that her name had been misspelled on her birth certificate, so her legal name was actually “Janet.” From then on she took the name Janet, with only a few schoolmates referring to her as “Jeanette.” Even though she was raised in St John’s United Church of Christ, she was always drawn to Catholic religious beliefs, mostly through a very close relationship with a special Aunt Mary and Uncle Frank, whom she visited and stayed with often during vacations in Chicago, where they lived. They were Catholic and took her to Mass with them, so at 18, she “took instructions” and joined the Catholic Church, living her life as a devoted Catholic convert. She was a strong-willed woman devoted to her beliefs, who was more interested in being outside doing yard and farm work, enjoying nature, rather than reading or doing housework.Being born of immigrants from France and Germany, Janet was raised in a strict household where her parents sometimes talked in their native tongues of French and German, yet Janet only spoke English. Ok Nyo (Pak) Leonard, 81, passed away on August 3, 2022, at Valley View Senior Life in Junction City, KS. Immediate burial will take place at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery on August 12, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. Ok Nyo was born November 15, 1940, in Hwanghae-Province, Korea to Chang-Moon Park and In-Young Jeong. She married Shelby Leonard on July 19, 1966, in Seoul, Korea. Ok and Shelby welcomed their first son while stationed in Korea. After relocating to the United States, they welcomed two more boys into their family. Ok Nyo enjoyed spending time growing traditional Korean vegetables in her garden. Ok Nyo also enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo with the people in her community. She is survived by her three sons Danny Leonard of Marietta, GA, Ron Leonard and John Leonard of Junction City, KS, and two granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her husband.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 11, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, 203 N. Washington St. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. with full military honors. A celebration of life will follow the graveside service at 12th Street Community Center in Junction City, KS at 3:00 p.m. John was born on January 13, 1952, in Hattiesburg, MS, to John Henry Lane and Mattie Lee Tatum Smith McCray. John served in the United States Army. He worked as a communication specialist for the Army for 20 years. John is also a Combat Vietnam War Veteran. He dedicated over 40 years to being a referee officiating various sports including football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, and boxing. He had a big passion and made many great friends working with everyone, from children to adults, officiating various sports. On March 30, 1973, John married Linda Louise Brown Tatum in Augusta, GA. They have been married for 49 years. John took interest to many of the enjoyable things in life. He enjoyed all genres of music and was an avid fan of cooking. John created tastes of art with BBQ, Grilling, and Southern Style dishes that everyone would devour. Most importantly, John knew how to create a strong relationships with his friends and his family. He loved going on vacation to see family and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Janice F. Pishny Schwartz, age 86, formerly of Blue Rapids, passed away at her home in Lawrence.

Jan was born October 2, 1935, to Edward J. and Alice M. (Musil) Pishny.&nbsp; She graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1953, and the University of Kansas School of Education in 1957.&nbsp; Jan married Robert W. “Bob” Schwartz at the Presbyterian Church in Blue Rapids on September, 2, 1956.

She was a member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Lawrence and a longtime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Blue Rapids. She was the Church organist for many years and served on the altar guild.

Jan’s volunteer/community organizations included:&nbsp; GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs), Friends of the Blue Rapids Public Library, Lawrence Welcome Wagon, and supporting Bob’s role in Rotary International service.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband Bob Schwartz, her children, Susan Andersen (Mark), Lawrence and Kurt Schwartz (Judy), Pflugerville, Texas.&nbsp; Grandchildren include, Allison Schwartz Rose (Alec), Matthew Schwartz and sister, Carol Gerlach (Paul), Tempe, Arizona.

Preceding Jan in death were her parents and infant brother, Edward J. Pishny, Jr.

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.&nbsp; Inurnment will be at Fairmont Cemetery in Blue Rapids.

Cheryl “Sherry” K. Bruns Schumacher, age 71, of Junction City and formerly of Riley, passed away at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka.

Sherry was born September 16, 1950, daughter of DeWayne H. Bruns and Ora Jean Shelby Bruns Buffinton.&nbsp; Sherry was born and raised in Manhattan, she attended Manhattan schools.&nbsp; Her ninth grade year she attended Seventh Day Adventist Academy in Enterprise, Kansas.

Sherry had been ill with Rheumatoid Arthritis for years also Diabetes, and cancer struck her twice.&nbsp; Sherry enjoyed walking, dining out, rodeos, bowling, cookouts and picnics.&nbsp; She loved children, animals and loved to cook.

Sherry had lots of friends, once you were her friend she was always your friend.&nbsp; She had a saying, “Never underestimate the power of a woman.”

Sherry had many career choices in her life.&nbsp; She was a Nanny for several years.&nbsp; She worked for Day Care centers, from teacher to management positions.&nbsp; She was a machinist and worked as an Inspector in quality control for a few manufacturers.&nbsp; She had a passion for people, she was a CNA and cared for the elderly and disabled.&nbsp; She had worked both in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Survivors include her husband Daniel J. Schumacher, Sr., retired Army SFC who resides in the home, her step-children: James Armstrong and wife Katie of Oklahoma, Daniel Schumacher, Jr. of Savanah, Georgia, Christiane Thomas and husband Spencer of Decatur, Alabama, and Matthias Schumacher and wife Nikki of Cannon City, Colorado, four step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren, &nbsp;a sister Lorena “Rene” Bruns Henton Lee and husband Curtis of Manhattan, a nephew, Jack E. Henton, Sr. and wife Anna and his sons: Diego Henton and Jack Henton, Jr. of California, a nephew Todd T. Henton &nbsp;of Republic, Missouri, and his sons: Tristan R. Henton, Topeka and Phoenix Henton, Republic, Missouri, cousin Ron Davis and wife, and also her friend, Peggy, of Spokane, Washington, cousin Robert “Bob” Litle and wife Linda of Tucson, Arizona.&nbsp; Sherry had five best friends:&nbsp; Barbara Reyer Cope Wilson, whom she has known since eighth grade, Janelle Smallwood Donna, whom she has known since her senior year, 1968, Lisa Mullet Curtright since 1990, Jessica Padgett since 2000 and Judy Speer whom she had known since their school days.

Gene Madison Ruthstrom, age 86 of Leonardville, passed away on August 5, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Gene, known to many as “Chick”, was born on October 7, 1935, in Leonardville, Kansas.  He was the son of Harry and Olive (Arents) Ruthstrom.  He grew up on the family farm west of Leonardville, with one sister and three brothers.  

He married the love of his life, Mary Lou Peterson on October 14, 1955.  She preceded him in death on February 4, 1995.

Gene was a member and treasurer of Clay Center Chapter #180 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Clay Center Masonic Lodge #134, Leonardville Lions Club, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and was known to be very ornery at times.  Gene cherished his friends and enjoyed hanging out with them at Fritz Oil.  He had a passion for farming and loved to disc up the ground and stir up the dirt.  He loved watching the wheat wave every summer with Mary Lou and reminisced that it looked like the ocean.  He raised feeder pigs, sows, and loved seeing new calves being born.  He proudly farmed to the age of 85. 

In his early days, Gene was a dairy farmer, worked at Hutchinson Royal, Farmers Coop, and Moorman Feed.  Later, he worked at the Manhattan Sale Barn and Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, where he retired. 

Gene is survived by two sons, Larry Ruthstrom, Leonardville, KS, and Terry (Chandra) Ruthstrom, Leonardville, KS; one sister-in-law, Doris Ruthstrom, Leonardville, KS;  grandchildren, Dillon (Amanda) Ruthstrom, Leonardville, KS, and Danelle (Sheldon) Koppes, Clay Center, KS; six great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Harry Ruthstrom, Jr., DeWayne Ruthstrom, and Dean Ruthstrom; his sister Donita Sherman; and his granddaughter Ashleigh.  Later in life, he married Sandy Creach who preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Leonardville Pride and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Clay Center, with Fr. Rex Matney officiating. Kenneth Leroy Hanson, Sr., age 83 of Randolph, passed away Saturday August 6, 2022, at the Salina Regional Health Center.

Kenneth graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a teaching degree and began his career at Lewis, Kansas for two years, Randolph for two years and then Logan, Kansas for 27 years.&nbsp; During this time, he earned his master’s degree from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; In 1997 he returned to Blue Valley to become the Middle and High School principal, retiring in 2004.&nbsp; Following his retirement, he continued to substitute teach and drive a school bus until he turned 80.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Kenneth Hanson, Jr and wife Debbie of Salina, Christine Marshall and husband Cullen of Solomon, John Hanson and wife Lee Ann of Baldwin City and Julie Weidenhaft and husband Brandon of Hays; three brothers, Melvin Hanson of Hutchinson, Gene Hanson of El Dorado and Steve Hanson of Manhattan; two sisters, Shirley O’Quinn of Bartow, Florida and Wanda Murphy of Milwaukie, Oregon; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Sharon Boyle, 78 of Clay Center, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on September 7, 1943 in Green, Kansas, the daughter of Leslie and LaVone (Johnson) Boyle.&nbsp;

Sharon grew up in Green and graduated from Randolph High School in 1961.&nbsp; She married David Kendrick and they later divorced.&nbsp; She then married Frank Tarr.&nbsp; Sharon attended beautician school in Colorado Springs and worked on Peterson Air Force Base.&nbsp; She and Frank divorced in 1985.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sharon worked as CNA and CMA for MedicaLodge, as a CNC machine operator at Yellow Brick and a caregiver at Big Lakes.

&nbsp;She is preceded in death by parents and her brother, Ronald Boyle.

Wilbur Dean Beemer, formerly of Carlton KS passed away July 28, 2022 in Tucson AZ. Wilbur was born September 29, 1929, to Lottie and Leslie Beemer. After graduating from Chapman High School, he began farming and later went in to heavy equipment work where he built ponds (his favorite, and often quite creative), terraces and waterways. On August 8, 1948 he married Lola Marie Meyer. They raised two children, a son Von and daughter Barbara.

He was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Carlton where he taught Sunday School and Youth Fellowship for many years. In his latter years, he was a member of the Presbyterian churches of Carlton and Tucson, AZ. He was the mayor of Carlton for several years and then continued on as city councilman. In 1976 he started Beemer Construction and was an active member of KLIC.

On December 28, 1985 he married Audrey Hawkes. After his retirement, they moved to Tucson, Arizona where he enjoyed his love for woodworking.

Preceding him in death were his parents Lottie and Leslie, his wife Lola, his brothers Wayne and Maynard, and grandson Ryan Hawkes. Survivors are his wife Audrey of the home, son Von (Sheila) Beemer, Abilene KS, daughter Barbara Keeler, Tucson AZ, step sons Gary ( Nancy) Hawkes, Salina KS, Larry Hawkes, Wichita KS, step daughter Kathy (Tommy) Barrett of Niles KS, grandchildren Chris (Lacie) Beemer, Chesapeake VA, Mark (Jenny) Beemer, Russell KS, Brittany (Kyle) Aungst, Tucson AZ, Stephanie Fairclough (Brent ), Salina KS and Shelby (Jake) Carter, Niles KS, sisters Betty Ann Cox, Abilene KS and Velma (Ed) Howie, Salina KS. Mary Dolores Schlegel, age 92, of Manhattan, died August 3, 2022, at her residence. She was born in Flush, Kansas, on November 29, 1929, the daughter of Meinrad H. and Loretta C. (Riat) Dekat. Dolores graduated from Flush High School in 1947. On June 6, 1950, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Flush, she was married to Matthew E. Schlegel. She worked as a clerk for McCall Pattern Company. Dolores was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Over 50’s Group. She volunteered at the Seven Dolors Budget Shop. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, sewing, crocheting, cooking, puzzles and traveling. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She never passed up an opportunity to hold a baby. Mr. Schlegel preceded her in death on August 27, 1989. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren: Christopher Kilner and Colby Mathies; and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her seven children: Sarah Releford and her husband Doug of Wamego, KS, Sandra Puett and her husband Lee of Florissant, MO, Richard Schlegel and his wife Martha of Wichita, KS, Kenneth Schlegel and his wife Sharon of Wichita, Regina Harrison of St. George, KS, Donna Kilner and her husband Gary of Manhattan, KS, and Kay Mathies and her husband Danny of Manhattan; three siblings: Dorothy Umscheid of Wamego, Alice Marten of St. George and Ruth Walsh of Louisville, KS; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 11th, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan, with Father Ryan McCandless as Celebrant. Beverly Sue “Bev” Cragg, of Manhattan, died peacefully on Aug. 5 ,2022 surrounded by family after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Bev was born Oct 21st,1946 in Manhattan, KS. She was the oldest daughter of six children to Bob and Katherine (Berends) Rose. Bev graduated from Manhattan High School in 1964. Bev married her high school sweetheart, Charles (Bill) Cragg, on Nov. 21, 1964, and they were married for 44 years. Bev and Bill were the definition of love, many would say inseparable. Bev moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 1968 following Bill’s activation in the National Guard. In 1970, they settled in Leavenworth, KS where she worked and retired from Ft. Leavenworth. Bev and Bill loved to travel and Laughlin, NV was one of their favorite spots to visit. Although they had no children of their own, Bev played a vital role in her nieces’ and nephews’ lives. In 2011, after Bill’s passing, Bev moved back to Manhattan, KS to be closer to her family where she became an invaluable asset to the community. She devoted her time to the following charitable organizations: Meals on Wheels, Via Christi, after school reading programs, and Toys for Manhattan. Bev enjoyed watching movies. Her favorites were E.T. and any John Wayne western. She also enjoyed reading murder mysteries, quilting, home improvement projects, yardwork, and winning a game of “Rummy Royal” against anyone of her family who dared to challenge her. She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Bev is survived by her two sisters Linda Cragg and Patty Jensen, brother Kenneth Rose (Carolyn) half-brother Richard Rose (Rhonda). Also left to miss her are her nieces and nephews, Brenda, Mike, Ron Jr., Kathy, Stacy, Bob, Charlie, Denice, Eric, Dustin and Derek, 21 great-nieces and nephews, and 6 great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Husband Charles (Bill) Cragg, two brothers Robert Rose and Ronald Rose. Thomas Joseph Moseler, age 78, of Ogden, died August 3, 2022 at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. Thomas was born on January 4, 1944 in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of Frank and Julia (Sullivan) Moseler Jr. He grew up in the Muskegon area and graduated from Muskegon High School with the class of 1962. He entered the U.S. Army and served for 10 years. Tom was proud to serve his country and honored to be a veteran. After his service time he worked for EFD Freight Company, McCall Pattern Company, Union Pacific, then worked for Kansas State in the maintenance department operating heavy equipment. On October 19, 1968 in Fort Riley, he was united in marriage to Connie Anderson. She survives at their home in Ogden. He loved old and classic cars; he was a member of the Yard Art Classic Car Club. He enjoyed his children’s activities, and coached the Little League Baseball teams they were on and also was a Scout Leader. Thomas was a former member of the VFW in Ogden and the American Legion. The community of Ogden and talking with the people of Ogden was just as important to him as his family. He served on the planning board in Ogden for some time. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Moseler, his brothers, James Matthew Moseler and Wayne Francis Moseler. In addition to his wife Connie, he is survived by his children, Bryan T. Moseler (Devon), Michelle R. Jacks (Victor), and Matthew J. Moseler (Becky); his grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his sister, Barbara Marie Lareva; and his many nieces and nephews. Ronald Alan Cox, 71, of Wamego, Kansas, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at the Wamego Health Center.

Ronald was born on December 29, 1950, in&nbsp;Oberlin, KS, the son of Ralph Eugene Cox and&nbsp;Georgia&nbsp;Ann (Teeny) Dooly.

He attended Lincoln Highschool then joined the U.S. Navy. After serving in the U.S. Navy Ronald worked for Jeffery Energy Center as an auxiliary equipment operator.

He married Lynn Cox on June 16, 1974, in Ashland, Nebraska. Lynn preceded him in death on November 6, 2021.

Ronald was a member of the American Legion post #172 and the VFW of Topeka. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He also dedicated his time as a den leader for troop #92 in Wamego. He was well known for his generosity often stopping to help people in need, fixing a meal, or fixing their car. &nbsp;

His children survive him; Crystal McWilliams (Michael), Martinsburg, West Virginia, John Cox (Jessica), Wamego, Shylee Cox (Jeremy Bohanon), Wamego, and Sam Cox (Erin), Nashville, Tennessee; and his four grandchildren, Mya, Mitchell, Alexandra, and Twyla. His brother, Tim (Luella) Cox, sisters, Teresa (Kevin) Keast, and Jill (Alan) Juhnke, and many nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lynn Cox, and brother Mike Cox.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Inurnment will take place at the Louisville Cemetery following the service. Lloyd Robbins, 41, of Junction City, KS, passed away on July 27, 2022. He was born in Italy on July 23, 1981, to Rayc Clyde Emil Robbins and Terry Lynn (Hall) Robbins. Lloyd Robbins

Tim Ellis Springer, age 68 of Manhattan, passed away Monday, August 1, 2022 at his residence.

He was born on June 8, 1954 in Manhattan, the son of Gyle “Bud” Derol and Doris Imogene (Fyfe) Springer.

He married Cynthia Rae Pickett on February 11, 1978 at All Faiths Chapel in Manhattan.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Tim worked in construction alongside his dad and brother, building many homes in the Manhattan area.&nbsp; He enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing, hunting and gardening.&nbsp; He was ornery and enjoyed telling stories, always putting a smile on someone’s face.&nbsp; Tim loved spending time with his family and was a loving husband, dad and papa.

In addition to his wife Cindy, he is survived by two daughters, Corey Springer of Manhattan and Amanda Springer of Manhattan; one brother, Robert Springer and Kelly of Manhattan; one sister, Jan McManis of Manhattan; three grandchildren, Apollo, Isabella and Kingston and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Michael Douglas Springer.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.&nbsp; Cremation will follow the visitation with a private family inurnment in the Carnahan Creek Cemetery at a later date.

Tim Ellis Springer

Joseph Fredrick Clemence was born April 2, 1929 to Lawrence and Thelma (Kean) Clemence in Abilene, Kansas. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1946. He grew up in the Sand Springs, Ks. community area as a kid and most his adult life. He grew up helping his father, Lawrence, on the farm and livestock business. On July 9, 1950, Joe married Joanna Carolina Mills. They worked together and started a family on a farm in the Sand Springs community.

Joe started his venture in the livestock business with Lawrence and other partners at the Salina Livestock Sale Barn in Salina, Ks. The sales were Monday and Friday. Joe and another partner purchased the Council Grove Sale Barn in Council Grove, Ks. The sales were on Saturday. In the mid 60’s Lawrence built the Farmers and Ranchers Sale barn in Salina. The old Salina Sale barn closed its doors and Joe changed directions and purchased the Herington Feed yard later named Tri County Feedlot. Joe could not stay out of the sale barn business so he and two other partners purchased the Herington Livestock Sale barn. After a year in the old sale barn, the partners built a new Herington sale barn where it stands today. Joe managed the feedlot just east of Herington and the Wednesday sales at the Herington Sale barn.

In 1980 Lawrence retired and Joe bought Lawrence’s shares of the Farmers and Ranchers Sale Barn. At that time Joe sold his shares in the Herington Sale Barn. Around 1985 Joe sold the feedlot. In the late 80’s Joe sold his shares of the Farmers and Rancher sale barn. He went on the road and did what he did best, bought cattle for other people. He had customers across the state of Kansas.

Joe’s hobby was horses. Joe and his family spent many weekends participating in horse shows throughout the state and high school rodeos across the nation. Joe grew up an avid racoon hunter and enjoyed coyote hunting the old fashion way, with greyhound dogs. Joe was a member of Abilene First united Church where he was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class. He ushered for the 10:30 worship service for 30 years.

Joe is survived by one daughter Teresa I. Clemence of Goodland, Ks., sons Bob and wife Theresa Ann of WaKeeney, Ks. Jon and wife Cecilia of Abilene, Ks. and Mike and wife Sandy of Abilene, Ks., seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Joe’s family also consisted of all the livestock facilities across the states where he sat days on end purchasing livestock. Joe is proceeded in death by his parents, wife Joanna, sister Dorothy Montgomery, brother Fred, and a granddaughter Nichole. There will be a 10:00 AM gravesite service Saturday August 6, 2022 at the Abilene Cemetery. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 24, 2022 at the Abilene First United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Martin Becker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are to the Abilene First United Methodist Church to maintain Sanctuary picture window.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joe started his venture in the livestock business with Lawrence and other partners at the Salina Livestock Sale Barn in Salina, Ks. The sales were Monday and Friday. Joe and another partner purchased the Council Grove Sale Barn in Council Grove, Ks. The sales were on Saturday. In the mid 60’s Lawrence built the Farmers and Ranchers Sale barn in Salina. The old Salina Sale barn closed its doors and Joe changed directions and purchased the Herington Feed yard later named Tri County Feedlot. Joe could not stay out of the sale barn business so he and two other partners purchased the Herington Livestock Sale barn. After a year in the old sale barn, the partners built a new Herington sale barn where it stands today. Joe managed the feedlot just east of Herington and the Wednesday sales at the Herington Sale barn. In 1980 Lawrence retired and Joe bought Lawrence’s shares of the Farmers and Ranchers Sale Barn. At that time Joe sold his shares in the Herington Sale Barn. Around 1985 Joe sold the feedlot. In the late 80’s Joe sold his shares of the Farmers and Rancher sale barn. He went on the road and did what he did best, bought cattle for other people. He had customers across the state of Kansas. Joe’s hobby was horses. Joe and his family spent many weekends participating in horse shows throughout the state and high school rodeos across the nation. Joe grew up an avid racoon hunter and enjoyed coyote hunting the old fashion way, with greyhound dogs. Joe was a member of Abilene First united Church where he was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class. He ushered for the 10:30 worship service for 30 years. Joe is survived by one daughter Teresa I. Clemence of Goodland, Ks., sons Bob and wife Theresa Ann of WaKeeney, Ks. Jon and wife Cecilia of Abilene, Ks. and Mike and wife Sandy of Abilene, Ks., seven grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Joe’s family also consisted of all the livestock facilities across the states where he sat days on end purchasing livestock. Joe is proceeded in death by his parents, wife Joanna, sister Dorothy Montgomery, brother Fred, and a granddaughter Nichole. There will be a 10:00 AM gravesite service Saturday August 6, 2022 at the Abilene Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 24, 2022 at the Abilene First United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Martin Becker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Joseph Fredrick Clemence -  April 2nd, 1929 - August 2nd, 2022

Harold O. Wilson, 95, of Junction City, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2022, at Brookdale of Junction City. He was born on December 17, 1926, in Sycamore, Georgia to John and Clara (Gilley) Wilson. Harold was drafted in the United States Army shortly after high school and served in Italy during WWII. He was later assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas and was honorably discharged in 1952. He married Nadine Ann Neeland on April 24, 1954, in Dwight, Kansas. Together, they purchased the Credit Bureau of Junction City and had one son Hal. Throughout his life, Harold was very dedicated to serving his community. He was active in many professional and civic organizations including Kansas Collectors Association, Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Counsel, Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 45, Economic Development Commission, Junction City Housing &amp; Development Corporation and the Fort Riley Chapter of AUSA. Harold served on the City Commission for 14 years and served as Junction City Mayor for 3 terms. Survivors include his son, Harold (Hal) Wilson II; his grandchildren, Morgan (Mike) Van Noy, Logan Wilson; three great grandchildren; and his niece Penny (Randy) Myers. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Nadine, his parents; and his sister, Wilma Ponder. Harold had a strong commitment to his family, faith and community. He was honored numerous times and was awarded multiple accolades throughout his lifetime. Harold will be greatly missed. The family will greet friends Monday at 10 a.m. on August 15, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Private inurnment will be at Humboldt Cemetery. Betty Kelley, 91, of Junction City, passed away on July 29, 2022 at Valley View Senior Life Center. She was born June 7, 1931 in Jennings, KS, the youngest child of Henry and Mary Blanche (Richardson) Heilman. She graduated from the Jennings school in 1949 as Valedictorian. Then she attended St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing, Denver, CO and graduated as a Registered Nurse in December 1952. She was united in marriage to William E. Kelley, May 4, 1957 in Ft. Collins, Co. In following her patrolman husband in his various work locations, Betty worked on various medical facilities and in various services for 25 years. While living in Goodland, KS she owned and operated a small uniform store which she loved. The family move to Junction City in 1973. She retired from nursing in 1993. Betty was a busy mother of five sons and had many stories and incidents to share. She was member of the J.C. Nazarene Church and participated in compassionate ministries. Her hobbies were crafting, arts and crafts, flowers, gardening and bird watching. She was an Avon representative and a member of the ladies Red Hat Society for a time and she was an avid fan of the KU basketball team. She is survived by her four sons; Brian, Norcatur, KS, Mark, Dodge City, KS, Brad (Susan), Perris, CA, and Troy (Diana), Shawnee, KS; Daughter-in-law, Janna, Houston, TX; grandchildren, Claire (Aaron) Elson, Cypress, TX, Zachary Lyman, Bailey and Courtney Kelley, Perris, CA and Lance Kelley, Shawnee; great-grandchildren, Lilly and Evelyn, Cypress, TX. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Susan Renae; her son Doug; her parents; a brother, Alfred and two sisters, Marie Zimmerman and Helen Muirhead. Dan E Conard was born on November 12, 1959: Ft. Campbell, Kentucky the son of Dwight and Lucille Conard. He passed away July 19, 2022 at his home in Abilene. Dan graduated from Chapman High School with the class of 78' and played football and took gymnastics in high school. He was proud to show his kids that he was still able to run up a tree and do a backflip off of it even many years later. He loved hunting and fishing and was given an award of a master angler from the State of Kansas in 1984. He also enjoyed working in his shop building all different types of things. He worked for the City of Abilene for many years. When his kids were younger he helped coach traveling baseball teams, softball, and AKWC wrestling. Dan is survived by his children: Daniel (Bethany) Conard: Trinity and Trevor, Kandi (Michael) Robinson: Jacobi, Jalen, and Jonavin, Heather Elliott: Brayden, Abby, and Leyla, Tyler (Samantha) Degand: Rowan and Wrenley, and Brittany Conard, siblings Diana Langston, Jack Conard, Lynette Scalzi and Lewis Conard. He was preceded in death by parents Dwight E and Lucille Conard. Due to the sudden loss, a celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
