RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp;criminal destruction of property in the 1200 block of Bertrand Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just before 3p.m. Friday, officers listed a 26-year-old man as the victim. He reported a known suspect poured glue all over his vehicle, and others' vehicles. 

Total loss associated with this report at this time is approximately $2,700.

Riley County Arrest Report July 22

HARRISON COUNTY, MO. –A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 5p.m. Sunday in Harrison County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Kia Sorento driven by Karam J. Bedros, 65, Woodbury, Minnesota, was southbound on Interstate 35 seven miles north of Eagleville.

The SUV traveled off the west side of the road into the median, struck the emergency crossover, became airborne, rolled and came to rest on its top.

A passenger identified as Victor B. Imad, 31, Manhattan, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported by the Harrison County Coroner to Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany.

Decatur County Ambulance transported Bedros to Harrison County Community Hospital. He was later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.&nbsp; Decatur County Ambulance transported passenger Carla E. Bedros, 59, Woodbury, Minnesota to Harrison County Community Hospital.&nbsp;

North Harrison Ambulance transported a third passenger Reena Bedros, 27, Woodbury, Minnesota to Lamoni Hospital. She was later air-lifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.&nbsp; Imad and Reena Bedros were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss told Hutch Post that his Rural Mainstreet survey is still showing weakness in the economy for this part of the country.

"This is a survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of 10 states, including Kansas, right down the middle, mid-section of the country," Goss said. "The overall rating for July was not good. In fact, this is the lowest that we've recorded this year, and it's certainly down from this time last year. And what we're seeing is just the rural Main Street economy, driven a lot by agriculture and energy, just not holding up very well."

You can see this in layoffs at implement manufacturers across the Midwest.

"Farm equipment sales, as reported by the banks,bank CEOs, are down for the 12th straight month," Goss said. "Of course, you look at John Deere, which has some fairly significant layoffs in Iowa, particularly, and other firms that are linked to agriculture. Farmers are struggling because of high interest rates and lower agricultural commodity prices. Likewise, exports are not holding up very well. In fact, we're down from this time, same time last year. That's having some negative impacts. So all in all, it has not been good. And the USDA isprojecting 2024 farm income is going to be down from 2023."

It may not get better for quite some time.

"We have a confidence index which tracks the economic outlook six months out," Goss said. "That's not good. Again, we're talking about high borrowing costs for the farmer. We're talking about weather related issues. We're talking about agricultural commodity prices, for example, corn around $4 a bushel depends on where you're selling it and what time frame you're looking at, but that's below break even for a lot of the farmers out there in the region."

Over half of rural mainstreet bankers see a recession as the greatest risk for the region over the next 12 months.

The rodeo continues Saturday evening at 7:30 at the arena on South Spring Valley Road. There is a Special Needs Rodeo from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday.

New rural fire station dedicated in southern Riley County

RILEY COUNTY —The Riley County Police Department has a new teammate in their work to fight crime.

On social media Friday, the RCPD introduced K9 Kyra.&nbsp; She is a highly trained Belgian Malinois specializing in tracking and narcotics detection. She successfully completed her first case on July 17, 2024, demonstrating exceptional performance.

The grand opening for the new Early learning Center and 30th anniversary of the Manhattan Boys &amp; Girls Club were celebrated with a ribbon cutting on Thursday.

The new facility can serve 156 Infant through Pre-K children. It contains nine classrooms.

Manhattan Housing Authority announced that they have been awarded a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) for the development of Sunflower Flats.

This new project marks a significant milestone in a commitment to providing quality affordable housing in Manhattan. Sunflower Flats will offer modern, energy-efficient apartments designed with the needs of the&nbsp; community in mind.&nbsp;

The money will be used to help develop senior housing.

Again, this will only involve moving lane closures and not a full closure of the road, so please watch out for signage and changing conditions for the duration of these two projects!

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

A Nissan sedan driven by 22-year-old Jason Mendoza of Fort Riley left the roadway and collided with a pole&nbsp;at the corner of Fort Riley Blvd and Richards Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Mendoza to Via Christi for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Office of the Kansas State Treasurer has learned that a Kansas resident was the victim of a scam by a government imposter. 

The scammer contacted the victim via phone call and claimed to be a representative of the Kansas State Treasurer’s office. The victim was told that he had recently won a sizable sum of money from the lottery. The scammer then informed the victim that collecting his lottery winnings would require a payment.

The victim was directed to wire funds as well as load money onto a gift card and once payment was received, the scammer indicated the State Treasurer would visit his home to present the winnings.

Imposter scammers may call, text or email to begin their scam. They often use caller ID to deceptively appear like the communication is coming from a reputable entity. Any request to make a payment in order to receive funds is likely fraud. Furthermore, any request for payment using gift cards is never a legitimate method a government entity would utilize.

“Imposter scams are a rising trend in Kansas,” said State Treasurer Steven Johnson. “Kansans should be aware that the State Treasurer’s office is not involved in the delivery of lottery winnings.”

The Office of the Kansas State Treasurer is currently the custodian of over $640 million in unclaimed property owed to Kansans. The distribution of those funds to the rightful owners never requires fees to be paid. Individuals and businesses can search for missing money at <a href="http://www.unclaimedproperty.ks.gov">www.unclaimedproperty.ks.gov</a>.

Treasurer: Kansan scammed by government imposter

This year’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cityofmhk.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e92cc4cc1e09dc1dafa7ba9da&amp;id=a835e23383&amp;e=8c33f27c6f">Furniture Amnesty Day</a>&nbsp;event will take place starting at&nbsp;8 a.m. Friday, July 26&nbsp;in City Park.

The City of Manhattan has announced that it is a free community event that gives people the opportunity to donate or pick up used furniture at no cost. Anyone can participate. There are no income requirements or forms to fill out to choose from the donated items.

Registration for furniture shopping begins at&nbsp;8 a.m.&nbsp;in City Park. Free shopping will be scheduled in 15-minute time slots from&nbsp;11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

FAD participants can return to the park at their scheduled time and take home up to five (5) furniture items at no cost. Items in a set, such as a table and chairs, only count as one item. No additional paperwork is needed. Furniture will continue to be gathered and dropped off throughout the day, so there will always be a fresh selection of goods available. Shoppers must be able to haul away any furniture they select.&nbsp;Delivery service is not available.

This year, due to ongoing construction, Fremont Street still will be closed from 12th to 14th streets. Therefore, participants will need to access City Park from 11th Street via Fremont to Central Park Road.

Parking will be available in the lots along North Park Road, south of the closed Fremont Street intersection.

“August is the most common month for people in&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;to move,” said Ryan Courtright, assistant chief of risk reduction for the&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;Fire Department. “We used to see a lot of furniture abandoned at the curb every August. Since some refuse companies do not pick up those large items, we were issuing a lot of code violation notices and furniture just sat and deteriorated. Furniture Amnesty Day grew out of an idea to help solve that problem and get that furniture to people who could use it.”

Furniture can be donated in two ways: 1) residents within&nbsp;Manhattan&nbsp;city limits can sign up online by&nbsp;5 p.m. Wednesday, July 24&nbsp;to have volunteers pick up their donated furniture at the curbside of their residence; or 2) donations can be dropped off at Miller Field in City Park from&nbsp;8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 26.

Acceptable donations include: Sofas; couches; desks; recliners; dressers; headboards; chairs; entertainment centers; and end, coffee, and kitchen tables.

Donations that will not be accepted include:&nbsp;FAD will not be accepting mattresses, dishwashers, pianos, grills, refrigerators, washers, dryers, televisions, monitors, computers, lamps, or other electronics. “Generally, we don’t accept anything that needs to be plugged in,” Courtright explained.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has placed the Gathering Pond at Milford Lake under a blue green algae warning.

According to the Milford Lake Corps of Engineers that means water is unsafe for humans and animals, visitors should avoid all contact with the water, DO NOT let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water and if fish are caught, clean well with potable water and eat fillets only.

Researchers and leaders from more than 40 nations will visit Manhattan,&nbsp; to learn the latest significant research and information on precision agriculture at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ispag.org/icpa">International Conference on Precision Agriculture</a>.

&nbsp;The conference is in partnership with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ispag.org/icpa">International Society of Precision Agriculture</a>&nbsp;and Kansas State University. Researcher Scott Shearer, professor and chair of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University, will give the opening keynote 8 a.m. Monday, July 22, on the future of artificial intelligence-driven ag technology. Kansas State University President Richard Linton will also speak at the opening ceremony

Precision agriculture will be the focus of a conference at K-State

The 30th annual Junction City Rodeo is this Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.&nbsp;

The theme for Friday night is 'Tough Enough to Wear Pink' and Saturday night's theme is 'Red, White and Blue.'&nbsp;

On both Friday and Saturday, the open rodeo will feature kids' events, such as the boot scramble, calf scramble, and mutton bustin'. On Saturday morning, there will be a Special Needs Rodeo from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and then during the rodeo on Saturday night, the Queen coronation will occur following the Saddle bronc riding.&nbsp;

Tickets are available to purchase before the rodeo at Tractor Supply, and Stacy's Restaurant. Tickets in advance are $9.00 for adults and $4.00 in advance for children six to 12. At the gate, tickets are $10.00 for adults, and $5.00&nbsp;for children six to 12. All children five and under are free.&nbsp;
