On Aug. 18 at approximately noon, deputies from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office took a report of an alleged physical altercation that took place on Milford Lake (Nudie Beach), Geary County Kansas on Aug. 17.

In a news release the Sheriff's Department said during the investigation into this physical altercation, it was learned Kurtis Geisler of Leonardville&nbsp; was at the beach with family and friends. The investigation revealed that threats of harm and a physical altercation had taken place between Geisler and another subject, identified as 42-year-old Ryan Diedrich of Randolph. During the investigation and speaking with several witnesses it was learned Diedrich had attempted to drown Geisler by holding him underwater, before being pulled off by witnesses. Geisler sustained minor injuries that were later medically treated.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 3:39 p.m. Ryan Levi Diedrich was taken into custody on the allegations of Attempted Murder (2nd Degree) and Criminal Threat and is currently being held at the Geary County Detention Center without bond, pending his first appearance.

The inaugural Kansas Landowner Conference took place in 2023, helping landowners removed from agriculture learn more about managing their properties and developing relationships with tenants.

This year, K-State Research and Extension farm economist Robin Reid said event coordinators added a day to the conference due to positive feedback from past attendees.

The conference is set for Oct. 10-11 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

“We had a great turnout at the first conference,” she said. “Previously, it was all in one day. We have found since then that there are many issues that landowners want to learn more about, so we expanded it to two days, giving participants more availability to desired information.”

“We know that this is smack dab in the middle of harvest for some people,” said Ashlee Westerhold, K-State director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition. “However, our target audience are those who own Kansas land but are not operating the land themselves.”

Reid added, “A demographic that we really want to experience this conference are those who did not necessarily grow up on the farm or those who inherited a farm and do not know where to start on how to handle being a landowner and working with a tenant.”

Due to the recent downturn in the farm economy, Reid said this year’s event will include more breakout sessions around topics that will “impact every Kansas landowner’s bottom line.”

“For crop-share landlords that do their grain marketing, we have an awesome session on how to put together a marketing plan, navigate crop insurance and select government support programs,” she said.

“Some of the other sessions revolve around components of a well-written lease, leasing rates and how to effectively negotiate with tenants.”

Additional breakout sessions happening during the 2024 Kansas Landowner Conference on Oct. 10 include:

Wind and Solar Leases, with Kansas Farm Bureau’s Wendee Grady – 1:30 p.m.

Climate and Carbon Credits, with K-State’s Micah Cameron-Harp – 1:30 p.m. Hunting leases, with K-State wildlife specialist Drew Ricketts – 2:30 p.m. &nbsp;Charitable Strategies in Agriculture, with K-State Foundation senior director of gift planning Darci Cain – 2:30 p.m.

Reid said landowners on the fence about participating should strongly consider it because industry experts will be presenting on the topics they receive the most questions about.

“The agricultural economics department gets information requests all the time about things like ‘What is the going rate for pasture rental in my area?’, ‘What are the legal implications of renting?’ and ‘What should I have in a written lease?’” she said.

“Our attendees will be able to answer those questions after the conference, feel comfortable with that information and know the people to contact if they want to learn more,” Westerhold said.

Currently, the early-bird cost of attendance is $350 per person, or $650 for two business partners. Westerhold said prices will increase after Sept. 15.

“At the 2024 conference, we are offering a business partner discount rate because we know a lot of our attendees are couples, siblings and parents/children, so having both people there to experience this event is something we wanted to encourage,” she said.

Just after 3:30p.m. on Tuesday, police arrested 38-year-old Evan Volker of Assaria, Kansas, in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road on a warrant for rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

On August 31, authorities in Saline County arrested Volker after a warrant/National Crime Information Center hit.&nbsp; &nbsp;Volker is being held on a $50,000 bond&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY — Riley County Fire District #1 has announced the appointment of Jake Konrardy as the new Deputy Chief of Administration.&nbsp; Konrardy, who began his role in August, has been a volunteer with the department since 2018 and brings experience, practical knowledge, and leadership skills to his new position.

“Donna would have loved a beautiful evening in downtown, listening to the symphony performance” said Executive Director Gina Snyder. “She was a true steward of our neighborhood and I know she would be honored.”

Tasting Tour is planned in downtown Manhattan

A Kansas Department of Transportation resurfacing project is scheduled to begin on U.S. 24 in Pottawatomie County on Thursday, Sept. 5, conditions permitting.

The project will take place on the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24, from approximately Excel Road to Columbian Road near Wamego.

The active work zone will be reduced to one lane and will have a 16-foot width restriction. Each median crossing in the corridor will temporarily close while work takes place on them.

All lanes will be open during non-working hours.

Work is expected to be complete within one week, conditions permitting. Crews will work during daylight hours and on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) has released its Labor Day Weekend Holiday Activity Report, covering the period from 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30 to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024. 

During this time, KHP personnel assisted 575 motorists and responded to one fatal non-DUI related crash, resulting in one fatality.

The victim in the drowning incident at Milford Lake on Saturday has been identified by Fort Riley as 29-year old Pvt. Ismael Ouedraogo with 5/15th&nbsp;Cec-A&nbsp;.

GEARY COUNTY —One person drowned Saturday at Milford State Park.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks responded to the drowning at the south boat ramp, swim beach located in the Milford State Park, according to a media release.

Bystanders located the individual who was reported being under water for more than 10 minutes and began CPR. 

 Upon arrival of EMS the individual was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; The sheriff's office has not released the name of the victim.

Army identifies drowning victim

RCPD asks for help with Aggieville incident that injured woman

MANHATTAN — Trent Stine still isn't sure if it's possible to have a bad day at Kansas State University. The facilities, the campus, the people — everyone and everything has always felt so inviting at K-State, the junior said, even since before he applied for admission. "I had a community here since I got here, before I was even a student," Stine, originally from&nbsp;Shawnee, said. "That's how friendly K-State is. I've been welcomed here since day one. It never felt like I was going to college. It felt like I was going to a second home. "It's a student experience that K-State continues to foster as one of the best in the country,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.princetonreview.com/press/best-390-colleges">according to a national survey by The Princeton Review</a>.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement had good news to report on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Two dinosaur statues, stolen overnight August 31 - September 1, have been recovered, according to Wamego Police. On Sunday police reported a citizen offered a reward for information leading to the recovery of the statues, according to a social media report.

Thanks to a tip received by Officer Albin and with assistance from SMPD Sergeant Wood the dinosaurs were recovered. Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

According to a social media report, "KHP Trooper Mullins encountered a situation that reminds us all of the importance of being prepared. 

Just before 8:30a.m. Monday, Trooper Mullins pulled up to a bus stranded in the&nbsp; median just east of the Chapman exit on Interstate 70 in Dickinson county. The bus, carrying about 20 members of a church group from Salina, had blown both front tires while returning home from Kentucky.

Despite calls to several wreckers, no one had the equipment to tow the bus. Trooper Mullins advised the group to arrange rides for the passengers and reached out to <a href="https://www.donstire.net/">Don’s Tire in Abilene.</a> Even on his holiday off, a gentleman from<a href="https://www.donstire.net/"> Don’s Tire </a>stepped up to change the tires, ensuring everyone got home safely. After six hours of traffic control by Trooper Mullins, the bus was back on the road.

This incident is a reminder to always check your vehicles—whether big or small—before embarking on trips.

GEARY COUNTY —&nbsp; Two people were injured in an accident just before 10p.m. Saturday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by Samuel A&nbsp;Mertens, 40, Kearney, Nebraska, was westbound on Interstate 70 and entered the construction zone between mileposts 295-U.S. 77 exit and 300-Kansas 57 exit.

&nbsp;Traffic began to slow in the construction zone. The Chevy rear-ended a 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Michael W Catt, 27, Wichita.&nbsp; After impact the Chevy&nbsp; drove around the Nissan and continued driving until he stopped near the Ohio Street exit in Saline County.

Mertens was not injured. Catt complained of pain and drove himself to the hospital. EMS transported a passenger in Nissan Wendy R. Catt, 54, Wichita, to&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Educators can claim this deduction even if they take the standard deduction, and both public and private school educators qualify.&nbsp;

Educators can claim deductions for out-of-pocket expenses on classroom items like books, supplies, equipment (including computers and software) and COVID-19 safety measures such as masks, disinfectants and air purifiers.
